SADDAM HUSSEIN’S SUMMER PALACE AND KINGDOM PALACE IN BABYLON
It’s estimated that Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein built 80–100 palaces during his 24 years reign. They were seen as an expression of his power and authority over Iraq. There was a Saddam Hussein palace built in every town of prominence across Iraq. We visited few of them.
This palace in Babylon was built during the economic embargo in the wake of the 1991 Gulf War. It took 4 years to build it. Before 2003, people were not allowed to enter the palace or even approach it. From 2003 to 2011, US forces used the palace as their headquarters and did not allow citizens to visit it either. Now visitors can enter the palace. There are good views of Babylon, Euphrates river and many dates palm trees from Saddam Palace.
Saddam also wanted every Iraqi to know that he rebuilt Babylon, not exactly from an archaeological point of view but for showing his regime’s presence. His palace at Babylon is carved with Arabic calligraphy that at first glance resembles religious iconography, but upon closer reveals itself to be Saddam Hussein’s initials.
Until this day, in the maze behind the Southern Palace, scores of bricks are stamped with a declaration: “In the reign of the victorious Saddam Hussein, the president of the Republic, may God keep him the guardian of the great Iraq and the renovator of its renaissance and the builder of its great civilization, the rebuilding of the great city of Babylon was done in 1987.”
Near the palace there is an statue of Saddam. Few weeks ago someone wrote there: Saddam is our hero.

Inspired by my lovely and lively niece I decided to practice drawing different emotions. For this I used a soft and a hard pencil in my A4 sized sketchbook. On the bottom half I experimented with quick simple faces and used myself as a reference, looking in the mirror girning, capturing the most prominent features. On the upper half I decided on three different emotions and drew children like I would for a comic or an animation. I thought of their character (the happy girl being my niece) and designed their looks accordingly making them fit with their emotion. Of cause I tried to exaggerate the feelings. It was interesting to observe which muscles move when you express a certain emotion as well drawing these movements in an extremer way.

The performance is done using facial expressions, body language/poses and a form of sign language. No words are used except for the singing of the narrarator. In this portion of the performance, they take the time to explain some of the common gestures used in the snippet we are about to watch. Most Kathakali performances last for 9 hours.
I guess I have thousands of portraits .. and I will find a way to upload more and more of them by doing a series Called Expressions .. This is expressions 1 .. :)
