After chasing this little guy/girl around for about 5 or so minutes, the battle was lost. So I came to the conclusion that sometimes you just have to take what life gives you.
Inspired by my lovely and lively niece I decided to practice drawing different emotions. For this I used a soft and a hard pencil in my A4 sized sketchbook. On the bottom half I experimented with quick simple faces and used myself as a reference, looking in the mirror girning, capturing the most prominent features. On the upper half I decided on three different emotions and drew children like I would for a comic or an animation. I thought of their character (the happy girl being my niece) and designed their looks accordingly making them fit with their emotion. Of cause I tried to exaggerate the feelings. It was interesting to observe which muscles move when you express a certain emotion as well drawing these movements in an extremer way.

The macaque staring with open mouth and covered teeth is threatening the one closest to it. It had been grooming the further away macaque when it's rival sat down between them, much to it's annoyance. It backed down quickly though.

Expression is an art of communication, it's a construction of ideas or thoughts that can be derived from either what you feel or what you think. It discribes a part of your emotion and a glimpse of what you perceive. It can be either abstract or concrete but it is how connection is made.
