Elle Mills, World Fair
This picture is of the World Fair in Knoxville Tennessee, in 1982. Carnivals, Festivals, and Fairs have seemed to always be apart of American tradition. They seem to cross the line of color, class, and status, by allowing everyone an opportunity to enjoy themselves. “1876 Centennial Exposition filled Philadelphia’s Fairmont Park with a spectacular building that not only drew 9.9 million people to celebrate the nation’s emergence as an industrial power, but also advertised the notion of seeing the rest of America.” In 1893 Chicago hosted the World Fair. It drew in 27 million visitors. It was very popular because it was almost seen as a substitute for travel since they had collected and displayed things from all over the world. Natural Wonders were remade into miniatures versions, so that people could experience them. From the fair they could also get postcards, which were only recently okayed by the postmaster, and other souvenirs of their trip. This is also where commercialized souvenirs and guide books first began to sell. These souvenirs also sold others on the fair as a future destination for mid nineteenth century travelers. In 1888 George Eastman developed a cheaper and simpler way to make pictures and prove to people that you had actually been to the place you said. For the fair you had to pay a small fee for bringing your camera. Not only did the fair bring in tourist, but the city did as well. People who lived in the country wanted a taste of the city life. They wanted to come explore the buildings and different amusements in the city. In the 1890s the cost of the bicycle dropped allowing people access to local tourism. This trend helped to spring up local museums and historic foundations. In the 1920s the wealthy and upper middle class started traveling outside of the United States. They traveled abroad on new luxury steamboats. In 1927 there was a new southern route which allowed for travel around the world. The World Fair was more or less for the working class people who could not venture out to see the sights the fair had replicated. Later, bus systems like Grey Hound were developed because they were more flexible then trains at getting people to different destinations. Busses also helped smaller towns along the route gain tourist dollars from the bus stops. When cars became cheap enough for a family to buy, they were usually the main source of travel for Americans, and fairs were easily accessible.
