The Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary is a bird sanctuary located on western tip of the Island of Chorao along the river Mandovi, Goa, in India. The sanctuary is named after Dr. Salim Ali, the eminent Indian ornithologist. Away from the beaches of Goa this is truly a paradise for nature lovers and bird watchers where you can see a variety of species of birds and plants.

From Panaji, one can take a cab, auto or bus till the Ribandar ferry dock and take a ferry across the Mandovi River to the island. The Sanctuary is located very close to the ferry dock and identified with a signboard.

The size of the sanctuary is 178 ha (440 acres). The area is covered with a thick layer of mangrove forest. The place is not well maintained but it is habitat with rich species of birds.

One can find many different kinds of birds and animals, including species such as the mudskipper and the black drongo.

Kingfishers are a group of small to medium sized brightly coloured birds in the order Coraciiformes. They have a cosmopolitan distribution, with most species being found in the Old World and Australasia. The group is treated either as a single family, Alcedinidae, or as a suborder Alcedines containing three families, Alcedinidae (river kingfishers), Halcyonidae (tree kingfishers), and Cerylidae (water kingfishers). There are roughly 90 species of kingfisher. All have large heads, long, sharp, pointed bills, short legs, and stubby tails. Most species have bright plumage with little differences between the sexes. Most species are tropical in distribution, and a slight majority are found only in forests. They consume a wide range of prey as well as fish, usually caught by swooping down from a perch. Like other members of their order they nest in cavities, usually tunnels dug into the natural or artificial banks in the ground. A few species, principally insular forms, are threatened with extinction.

The 2015 Explore@NASAGoddard event, on Sept. 26, celebrated the 25th anniversary of the launch of the Hubble Space Telescope. Investigating everything from black holes to planets around other stars, Hubble has ushered in a new chapter of humanity’s exploration of the universe, and the venerable telescope continues to answer some of the most compelling astronomical questions of our time.

Additionally, all areas of Goddard’s research – Earth science, heliophysics, planetary science, astrophysics, and engineering and technology – were presented, as each discipline plays a critical part in NASA's ongoing journey to reach new heights, reveal the unknown and advance scientific understanding for the benefit of humankind.

Snapped this image not only because it looked neat with the clouds passing behind and in the reflection of the glass, but because it also looked like what an artist's rendition of the building would look like if created before the building actually went up.

Cool stuff: I entered this into the Metro Global Photo Challenge and it was printed in the Oct. 4th, 2007 edition of the Metro magazine as part of a promotion for the contest .

Today is the three week anniversary of the Sept 12, 2008 Metrolink train crash in Chatsworth. This photo was taken in Carpenteria, CA which is further north on the same Amtrak train line upon which the crash occurred. (That is the Carpinteria Amtrak train station in the far distance, past the train crossing arms). ...

This was the second train accident this year to hit close to home. ...

My home, my hearth, and my community suffered the loss of Arieh who was tragically killed by an Amtrak train this past spring just days before he was due to come home from college. ...

I knew Arieh for a number of years. he was a well liked and very giving young man who always had a kind word on his lips. This is for you Arieh. ...

The Faroe Islands are an archipelago between the Norwegian Sea and the North Atlantic, about halfway between Norway and Iceland, 320 kilometres north-northwest of Scotland. The islands are an autonomous country within the Kingdom of Denmark. Their area is about 1,400 square kilometres with a population of 50,030 in April 2017.

The Faroes' terrain is rugged, and the islands have a subpolar oceanic climate: windy, wet, cloudy, and cool. Despite this island group's northerly latitude, temperatures average above freezing throughout the year because of the Gulf Stream.

Between 1035 and 1814, the Faroes were part of the Hereditary Kingdom of Norway. In 1814, the Treaty of Kiel granted Denmark control over the islands, along with two other Norwegian island possessions: Greenland and Iceland. The Faroe Islands have been a self-governing country within the Kingdom of Denmark since 1948.

The Faroese have control of most domestic matters. Areas that remain the responsibility of Denmark include military defence, the police department, the justice department, currency, and foreign affairs. However, as they are not part of the same customs area as Denmark, the Faroe Islands have an independent trade policy, and can establish trade agreements with other states. The islands also have representation in the Nordic Council as members of the Danish delegation. The people of the Faroe Islands also compete as a national team in certain sports.

The Faroe Islands have been on my travel list for quite a time; lost in the cold waters of the Atlantic, seldom visited, off-the-beaten path, possessing all those lovely moods of the deep north I'm fond of...

We spent 10 days in the archipelago in total, pursuing hiking day trips or even going for overnight stays somewhere in the wild - and it was a beautiful northern experience, with moods of solitude, splendid sunshine turning into heavy rains, sometimes strong winds - all in beautiful unspoiled nature and when exploring picturesque small towns and villages.

Mykines island has it all. Or nothing… depends on what you prefer. All for those who seek for solitude, end of the world type of a place, wild and rugged scenery, thousands of seabirds.

Only accessible by boat or helicopter and without any car traffic, there are just 11 permanent residents of Mykines village; although there are 40 houses in the settlement, only six are inhabited year-round.

Sometimes you are privileged to go a little further.

RAF West Drayton housed the Linesman System, hence the main Operations Building being known as the L1. The system used Link 1 to exchange Air Defence data between the UK and Europe. There were links to RAF Reitan, RAF Maakeroy, RAF Vaedbek, RAF Niew Milligan, RAF Glons and RAF Doulons.

The Operators (Aerospace System Operators) (ASOps or Scopies) were responsible for the tracking and identification of every flight - Military and Civil, that entered or left the UK Air Defence Region (UKADR). This was a labour intensive task in the days before automatic initiation and tracking systems, but a big improvement on the Plotting Table and little perspex plaques with the information written on them. The School of Fighter Control was still teaching plotting and writing backwards until 1990.

Mainly smashed up now. You have to see the place to appreciate the scale of the room, and get a feel of what it must have been like full of workers.
