Nasty Explore down a horrible hole. Super rare accidental find 30 odd years ago, re-found and explored in 2014. I knew where it was and it still took an hour to find it again. Abandoned and capped for 55 years (apart from this very obscure entry point). This is our crew only explore, nobody else has ever been down here since closure, guaranteed.

Exploring Essen #109

If you are interested in the underlying concept of this series please read the description of the album.

The Faroe Islands are an archipelago between the Norwegian Sea and the North Atlantic, about halfway between Norway and Iceland, 320 kilometres north-northwest of Scotland. The islands are an autonomous country within the Kingdom of Denmark. Their area is about 1,400 square kilometres with a population of 50,030 in April 2017.

The Faroes' terrain is rugged, and the islands have a subpolar oceanic climate: windy, wet, cloudy, and cool. Despite this island group's northerly latitude, temperatures average above freezing throughout the year because of the Gulf Stream.

Between 1035 and 1814, the Faroes were part of the Hereditary Kingdom of Norway. In 1814, the Treaty of Kiel granted Denmark control over the islands, along with two other Norwegian island possessions: Greenland and Iceland. The Faroe Islands have been a self-governing country within the Kingdom of Denmark since 1948.

The Faroese have control of most domestic matters. Areas that remain the responsibility of Denmark include military defence, the police department, the justice department, currency, and foreign affairs. However, as they are not part of the same customs area as Denmark, the Faroe Islands have an independent trade policy, and can establish trade agreements with other states. The islands also have representation in the Nordic Council as members of the Danish delegation. The people of the Faroe Islands also compete as a national team in certain sports.

The Faroe Islands have been on my travel list for quite a time; lost in the cold waters of the Atlantic, seldom visited, off-the-beaten path, possessing all those lovely moods of the deep north I'm fond of...

We spent 10 days in the archipelago in total, pursuing hiking day trips or even going for overnight stays somewhere in the wild - and it was a beautiful northern experience, with moods of solitude, splendid sunshine turning into heavy rains, sometimes strong winds - all in beautiful unspoiled nature and when exploring picturesque small towns and villages.

Mykines island has it all. Or nothing… depends on what you prefer. All for those who seek for solitude, end of the world type of a place, wild and rugged scenery, thousands of seabirds.

Only accessible by boat or helicopter and without any car traffic, there are just 11 permanent residents of Mykines village; although there are 40 houses in the settlement, only six are inhabited year-round.

It was a bloody long drive to this former school. Have seen a loooooot of pictures of the chapel, and decided to pay it a visit.

Entry was easy and started photographing the hallway and stairs. But the main thing I was coming for was that chapel, so I started searching for that first. At one time I heard people talking and making noise. I thought: Fellow explorers! This place was flooded with explorers the last few weeks, so I did not make any efforts to not make myself heard and continued my search. The noise came closer as I continued my way to the chapel. At one point I walked down the stairs and to my right I see the back of a lady with what I thought was a tripod. She was about 2 meters away from me. To my left I saw some guys doing something, but could not tell what. I looked again to the lady and she turned on a vacuum cleaner! That was clearly the ‘tripod’ I thought I’d seen! I turned around and walked back up the stairs, waiting for somebody to call for me. But nothing happened and I went back where I came in.

Once outside I saw a man and woman waving to me from the inside. At first I thought it was the guys I just ran into, but it were explorers from France who also heard noises but were more careful than me.

We tried to ge to the chapel through other buildings, but without success. I made some shots of some classrooms and decided to leave and head to the next location….

Two months later I was back and with success! We managed to get into the chapel and could finally do where I was coming from. After the rush, as all so called explorers already visited this place during rush hour. We had the place for ourselves this time…

This monastery was built in the mid of the 19th century. First the classrooms were built where girls were taught crafts like knitting, sewing and drawing, and got lessons in French. It got heavily damaged during WW I and II but rebuilt after the wars and the school was expanded with cooking classes. The last renovations were in the 1970′s but bearly 40 years later it closed down and all Sisters had to leave. Their new destination: Nursing homes. Sad but true…
