The Faroe Islands are an archipelago between the Norwegian Sea and the North Atlantic, about halfway between Norway and Iceland, 320 kilometres north-northwest of Scotland. The islands are an autonomous country within the Kingdom of Denmark. Their area is about 1,400 square kilometres with a population of 50,030 in April 2017.
The Faroes' terrain is rugged, and the islands have a subpolar oceanic climate: windy, wet, cloudy, and cool. Despite this island group's northerly latitude, temperatures average above freezing throughout the year because of the Gulf Stream.
Between 1035 and 1814, the Faroes were part of the Hereditary Kingdom of Norway. In 1814, the Treaty of Kiel granted Denmark control over the islands, along with two other Norwegian island possessions: Greenland and Iceland. The Faroe Islands have been a self-governing country within the Kingdom of Denmark since 1948.
The Faroese have control of most domestic matters. Areas that remain the responsibility of Denmark include military defence, the police department, the justice department, currency, and foreign affairs. However, as they are not part of the same customs area as Denmark, the Faroe Islands have an independent trade policy, and can establish trade agreements with other states. The islands also have representation in the Nordic Council as members of the Danish delegation. The people of the Faroe Islands also compete as a national team in certain sports.

The Faroe Islands have been on my travel list for quite a time; lost in the cold waters of the Atlantic, seldom visited, off-the-beaten path, possessing all those lovely moods of the deep north I'm fond of...
We spent 10 days in the archipelago in total, pursuing hiking day trips or even going for overnight stays somewhere in the wild - and it was a beautiful northern experience, with moods of solitude, splendid sunshine turning into heavy rains, sometimes strong winds - all in beautiful unspoiled nature and when exploring picturesque small towns and villages.
Mykines island has it all. Or nothing… depends on what you prefer. All for those who seek for solitude, end of the world type of a place, wild and rugged scenery, thousands of seabirds.
Only accessible by boat or helicopter and without any car traffic, there are just 11 permanent residents of Mykines village; although there are 40 houses in the settlement, only six are inhabited year-round.

Four African lion cubs took a brisk paddle at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo today and passed their swim reliability test. The cubs—three males and one female—were born at the Zoo March 2. All cubs born at the Great Cats exhibit must undergo the swim reliability test and prove that they are ready to be on exhibit. All four cats were able to keep their heads above water, navigate to the shallow end of the moat and climb onto dry land. Now that they have passed this critical step, the cubs are one step closer to being ready to explore the yard with their mother, 9-year-old Shera. The 10-week-old cubs will make their public debut in mid-June once all vaccinations have been administered.
“As keepers, it’s our duty to take every precaution to ensure the cubs’ survival,” said Kristen Clark, an animal keeper at the Great Cats exhibit. “It’s possible that a cub could be playing around and get knocked into the moat by a parent or sibling. We want to make sure that if they find themselves in that situation, they know how to pull themselves out of the water and onto shore.”
Both cubs took the test under Clark’s guard, as she gently guided them in the right direction. The shallow end of the moat is approximately 2 ½ feet deep, which could present an obstacle for young cats. The side of the moat closest to the public viewing area is about 9 feet deep and is an essential safety barrier that effectively keeps the cats inside their enclosure.
In an adjacent exhibit, the two lion cubs born to mother Nababiep Jan. 24 explored their outdoor enclosure after passing their swim test in April. Starting Friday, May 9, keepers will decide on a day-to-day basis whether Naba’s two cubs will spend time in the yard from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. This decision will be based on weather and how the cubs adjust to being outdoors. The Zoo will continue to share the latest updates and photos on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
The Zoo received a recommendation to breed the lions from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan for African lions. An SSP matches individual animals across the country for breeding in order to maintain a healthy, genetically diverse and self-sustaining population. Luke, the Zoo’s 8-year-old male lion, sired all six cubs. The next step in building a pride at the Zoo is to introduce all nine lions into the same shared space. The first meeting between them took place April 24 and was captured on video.
“Introductions are always tense the first time you do them, but we always try to build on positive behaviors we’ve seen in the past,” said Rebecca Stites, an animal keeper at the Great Cats exhibit. “All lions seemed interested in one another and their interactions were positive during “howdy door” and face-to-face meetings. We’re gradually increasing the amount of time that the pride is together behind the scenes. Our hope is that they will all be on exhibit as one pride this summer.”
The pride social structure makes lions unique among the great cats, many of which are solitary animals. African lion populations in the wild have dwindled by 30 percent during the past 20 years as a result of poaching, disease and habitat loss. They are considered a vulnerable species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

Proving there was still life in the old dog yet, Realtoy applied its new and very modern Police Department livery on to its ancient Ford Explorer casting not many months before the brand was totally swept away at Tesco. This new colour scheme did a decent job of keeping this model looking fresh with its very dark blue hue hiding evidence of cost cutting. Part of a five vehicle Emergency themed set bought back in February 2017. Mint and boxed.
I haven't checked on this in a while and I was shocked to see 7 cakes. YAY!

The 2015 Explore@NASAGoddard event, on Sept. 26, celebrated the 25th anniversary of the launch of the Hubble Space Telescope. Investigating everything from black holes to planets around other stars, Hubble has ushered in a new chapter of humanity’s exploration of the universe, and the venerable telescope continues to answer some of the most compelling astronomical questions of our time.
Additionally, all areas of Goddard’s research – Earth science, heliophysics, planetary science, astrophysics, and engineering and technology – were presented, as each discipline plays a critical part in NASA's ongoing journey to reach new heights, reveal the unknown and advance scientific understanding for the benefit of humankind.

The genus Muscari, commonly and collectively known as grape hyacinths, are a group of perennial plants native to Eurasia that produce urn-shaped spikes of dense, most commonly blue, flowers resembling bunches of grapes in the spring. White cultivars also exist.

Charles Sturt the intrepid explorer forever commemorated in bronze in the northwest corner of Victoria Square, Adelaide.
WIKIPEDIA
Captain Charles Napier Sturt (28 April 1795 – 16 June 1869) was a British explorer of Australia, and part of the European exploration of Australia. He led several expeditions into the interior of the continent, starting from both Sydney and later from Adelaide. His expeditions traced several of the westward-flowing rivers, establishing that they all merged into the Murray River. He was searching to determine if there was an "inland sea".
