Showy milkweed is a member of the Milkweed Family (Asclepidaceae).

Monarch butterflies lay their eggs on the undersides of showy milkweed and some other milkweed plants. The larvae consume the foliage, which is toxic, to make themselves and the adult butterfly stage less palatable to predators. Viceroy butterflies, in turn, have a very similar appearance to the Monarch butterfly. The Viceroy relies upon this mimicry to protect itself from predators that mistake these butterflies for the unpleasant-tasting Monarchs.

My oldest son Sam graduated from Purdue this weekend. A proud moment for us all. Here he is in his cap and gown giving his younger brother a pre commencement bear hug. I think we have the Christmas photo taken care of!

You Flickr members are responsible for this image of mine entering Explore at number 1. I never imaged it would have the impact it has had. I am humbled, thank you.

At the weekend a photographer friend told me that she didn't like my 'ghost' shots, but I find them fun to take because they can be challenging when you are on your own! This image is far from technically correct but then again I don't take images to compete, I do it for the smile it puts on my face.

Many of you will already know that this is Bád Eddie, or Eddie's Boat in English. I have visited the wreck twice and both times the weather has not been helpful. I know that sky could be dramatically improved with Photoshop but I don't use it so this will have to do.

The story says that Eddie ran his boat aground and walked away in frustration due to a nasty divorce, never to return to the boat. When I wade around that beautiful wreck I always feel that part of him is still there. He was Eddie, I am Eddie, hence the ghost, it's a bit of fun :-)

I don't think the Halloween party is down this road!!!

2 more days until Halloween!!!

K-36 class locomotives DRGW 488 and 489 work together out of Chama, NM to bring a freight train up towards the summit of Cumbres Pass. A timeless image that was taken just yesterday. It was a crazy experience to hear these engines work hard up grade. Here the train is rounding many of the curves found along the line in the Sangre De Cristo Mountain Range. The hill blocks the view of 489, but the giant smoke plume rising into the air gives a good illustration of how hard that engine is pushing.

I took this picture after a nice hiking tour on Mount Pilatus in Lucerne, Switzerland.

I used a 10 stop ND filter to get the water of the river as smooth and flat as possible.

The Story

This mother and cub (child) was passing by while we was doing some climatic research in the Fram Straight. I think the scene was a bit interesting with the birds in the background. The colors up here is really special. The Polar Bear is the biggest of all bears. This day we saw 19 of them. This mother and cub was close to a big male bear. That is unusual to see. The male Polar Bear is known of killing the cubs so he can get the mother interested in him. But nothing happened, not as long as we was there.
