Last week I was trying to crunch in some extra miles west of the Penokee Ski Trails. I had never been on this stretch of trail and didn't realize how low lying parts of it would be. Thank goodness I had worn my bright orange keen sandals--it had rained a few days prior, but because of the shade and the elevation, the mud was up over my ankles in places and I lost a shoe! So there I was for probably 10 minutes, digging through mud trying to find the sandal as the sun is slowly going down. Lucky for me, my headlamp picked up the orange color and I didn't have to hobble out the last few kilometers barefoot in the dark. Wish I had taken a picture of how bedraggled I was!

My husband and I endeavored a thru-hike on the SHT. While I became ill and had to leave the trail one day and 10 miles short of our goal, Bill went back a few days later to "earn" his true thru-hike "merit badge". We spent 31 days on the trail; 33 days on the journey. We did an unconventional flip-flop hike (hiking both ends toward the middle). Had an AMAZING time; met several trail angels (scored some plums, pizza, Fig Newtons and info on a snowmobile shelter that saved us in a T-storm!), and have adventures to tell. Saw a Pine Martin, Red Fox, deer, and countless grouse; wolf tracks and moose poop. ;) Filtered water from a mud puddle, bathed in a cold creek, and delighted in a flicker of the northern lights. It was tough and exhausting for our (older) bodies, but worth every step!
