Chasing Aurora's last night, June 22, 2015, I found myself near a storm system that was tracking it's way across the landscape in front of me. The lightning was strong, and this was the strongest strike. Shot next to Alberta Highway 9, looking North toward Beiseker, Alberta.

A Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes) kit standing in front of its den site. They have exceptional sight, smell and hearing abilities which makes them excellent hunters. Unlike other mammals, they are able to hear low-frequency sounds which help them hunt small animals, even when they’re underground. Copyright © Kim Toews/All Rights Reserved.

Since August of last year, we have started taking the 1A highway out of Canmore through to Calgary and back home. Although not very far from the Trans-Canada Highway, it is a much more scenic, almost intimate, drive.

We made it through this area looking for a good vantage point to get a long exposure of a train running through Kananaskis Country. I saw the water and just pulled over.

Through the beauty of long exposure camera tricks, you can't see how blisteringly cold and sharp the wind was. We got some great motion in the water to get it nice and frosty-smooth. I wanted to get as long as an exposure as I could to get the clouds as wispy as possible.

I was also just really happy to get a good view of the turquoise water. I wonder how long it would take for me photographing the turquoise water of western Canada before it loses its appeal. Likely never.

"Gallagher Park"

Multiple shot stitched panorama of one of the best spots photograph the Edmonton skyline! Loving the D610, as I was able to capture all the shadows and highlights in a single shot which allowed me to shoot this panorama much faster. File size is over 50" long, it should print huge!

View it on my website here, www.mikeisaak.com/photo/gallagher-park-sunset/ where you can purchase prints.

We have been through Banff quite a few times in the last few years. It wasn't until recently that we have stopped just outside of Banff at the rest stop above Vermillion Lakes. It wasn't actually until this week when I realized that this was the area you see from Highway #1.

Every other time we have come to the lookout above these lakes, I have always been disappointed by what I produced. I was a little discouraged from that rest stop.

We decided to get right down there and once I saw liquid water, I was running out to the shoreline in the bushes.

I set up the tripod and dialed in the exposure. I dropped it all the way down to f/22 and with my trusty B+W ND110, I was able to get a nice lengthy exposure. The clouds were flying by quite steadily and I captured some good motion. I would have liked to get more than 30 seconds but they look good in the sky .

After doing some research on a DIY ND filter, I realized that I could better adjust white balance in my own photos. I used the 'Custom White Balance' feature and shot a blank white page from my Field Notes and set the WB from that image. The result was incredible. I will work that into my process each and every time.

This is probably a lucky 'catch'. This old home will not be standing for much longer.

Here is another one of my favorites from last week's trip to the rockies. Here is a small part of Vermillion Lakes, just outside of Banff.

Such interesting scenery in the winter. This was the only area of the lake that was in liquid state, and it appears that there was a nearby spring as you could really smell the sulphur.

I tried stretching the exposure as long as I could without blowing out the sky and I landed around 75 seconds.

I removed a few pesky rocks, floating bits, and small lens flares out in post to give an overall cleaner, pristine image.

Love narrow trails like this. Reminds me of the bamboo trails on Maui. The light from the evening sun seemed to bring out the same rich green. But this is deep in the boreal forest region of Alberta. ha!

Peyto Lake was named after Bill Peyto, the trail guide. But this lake is famous for its shape - the head of a wolf or a dog. One more must seen lake on your Icefields Parkway trip.

Another image of the amazing sunset from the prairies.

I cannot describe how beautiful they are, I decided to show you, lol.

Again, I am liking the underexposed foregrounds to really draw attention to the beauty of the sky.

I added the fence in to fence the foreground some depth as well.

As Always, Thanks for viewing and any comments are welcome.

Moraine Lake August 2017

Brocken Spectra (aka mountain spectra)! My first time seeing this optical phenomenon was on a recent sunrise hike. In the center of the circles is my shadow cast on the clouds by the sun behind me. My head is surrounded by a halo of “rings of glory”. A glory resembles a saint’s halo (not particularly fitting for a metalhead like me…) and is believed to be caused by light tunneling through air inside miniscule water droplets and then being emitted backwards due to resonance effects. In order to see this the clouds actually have to be below you because the center of glory is antisolar . So a 10^4 mountain is a pretty good spot to experience some cool optics.

Merry Christmas from our home to yours!

About this photo: A Christmas photo of the pup we are training. It's been a while again since I have posted here, we've had so much snow and I have been stuck at home due to that. Some of you might remember that we welcomed a puppy into our home in May as we decided to become puppy raisers for the BC & Alberta Guide Dogs. It has been quite an amazing journey so far with some challenging times, but now at almost 9 months old she is turning into such a wonderful dog that will hopefully make someone's life a little easier in the future! ❤️

Last year we met a lady who has become a good friend. She is a puppy raiser for quite some time already and she is already raising her 5th puppy. The duty of puppy raisers is to teach these dogs proper house manners and some specific skills while they stay with your. When they are about 18 months old they will be going into advanced training. Which means we will have to return the dog and they go to full time trainers for the advanced training of the program. This is where they get really ready to become a guide dog for the blind/visually impaired people, a companion for children with autism or people with PTSD, etc...
