Exploratorium 2008 - San Francisco

Rod Pujante

The Exploratorium, the hands-on science museum, we came to find out was the site of San Francisco’s “coming out party” (no pun intended) after the great quake of 1906. This was the site of a world’s fair, or something of the sort, and the rotunda and pillars were built to emulate ancient sites in Greece. The museum itself was neat inside, but not much photo-worthy, although I did forget to take a picture of the world’s fair painting that showed the entire grounds (all of the buildings except for the Exploratorium have since been destroyed). At any rate, I am just posting these two shots so to detail the architecture.

took a trip to SF. One of the stops was the Exploratorium. This place is absolutely fascinating. Definitely a must see when you have a few hours to roam, walk, enjoy and learn so many awesome things.

The Exploratorium was founded in 1969. The Exploratorium is a museum in San Francisco with over 475 participatory exhibits, all of them made onsite, that mix science, art and human perception. It also aims to promote museums as informal education centers. It has a vast collection of online interactives, web features, activities, programs, and events that feed your curiosity. In 2013 the Exploratorium was moved to a new home: Pier's 15/17 (Reference: www.exploratorium.edu/).

(this was the last sighting of the doll. Going back soon)

I was at the Exploratorium in San Francisco with my kids when we came across a display which allowed you to watch ice crystals as they formed through a magnifier fitted with a polarizer filter. Fortunately, I had a polarizer filter with me and I was able to take some interesting photos of the ice crystals forming without having to shoot through the provided magnifier.

This shot was taken a few minutes after the previous ice crystals had been fully melted by a spray of water.

The water is perfectly clean.

"Chime Line"

It was a little obstructed by the farmers market, but definitely fun to do!

The Exploratorium has interactive activities on both sides of the civic center plaza; bring a friend - the more the merrier!

It was in 2009 that I first visited this place, stunned by its beauty. Ever since I moved to Bay Area, I know I will visit it again sooner or later. And here I am.

We thought it would be a 1/2 day visit (allowing a 1/2 day at the Academy of Sciences), but we ended up there all day!

"Tick-Tock Walk"

Do you absentmindedly run your hand along the wall while walking?

Start the pendulums in motion as you walk through and set different rhythms in motion.
