Arctic Exploration

ca. 1850-1875

Captain Henry Kellet left tins of roast beef and ox cheek soup in his Dealy Island cache in 1853; Captain Francis McClintock left the boots and saw behind at Melville Island in 1852-53; and Captain George Nares’ crew used the decorated dinner plate during his 1875 search for the North Pole.

Into the Sticks

28th May 2018

Visited one of my favorite exploration spots. Brought along some toys - this is the mask I made a few weeks back. Tried out some of my new 2nd generation EL wire. Came out pretty well - especially since it was not that dark!

Since 1927 Setzer Forest Products (formerly the Setzer Box Company) has occupied the area at Broadway and Third Street in Sacramento, California.

Originally Setzer manufactured soft pine shooks ("shook" is the term for pre-sawn material used to make boxes) , trays, picking boxes and nailed boxes. Setzer manufactured boxes for many local and national and international brands such as Del Monte, Hunt's Palmolive, Campbell's and Van Camp's among others.

In 1933, the National Industrial Recovery Act was passed, which hampered the production of boxes as Setzer could only sell the box shooks at the amount it cost the company for the lumber.

In response, in 1934 Setzer purchased land and built sawmills in Greenville, California and Sacramento, California.

In addition to it's boxes, Setzer also began to manufacture Pres-to-Logs and (production ceased in 1992) shade slats (production of which ceased in the late 1970's).

1968 was a busy year for Setzer, due to the construction of Interstate 5, Setzer closed its lumber storage facility and some of it's sawmill operations in Sacramento, in addition, a separate Setzer facility near 65th Street in Sacramento, which housed a planing mill and also produced boxes, closed the same year.

Setzer also changed their name from the "Setzer Box Company" to "Setzer Forest Products" the same year.

Beginning in 1970 Setzer began to produce finger joint mouldings and in 1978 began production of cut stock for window and door manufacturers.

In 1998 Setzer began to produce Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF), which it still produces today.

In 2006, Setzer sold off nearly 31 acres of it's remaining mill property in Sacramento, for the development and construction of a mixed use project with up to 2,000 homes.

Today the MDF and moulding production is still active, although the mill has begun to slowly dismantle some of their facilities, as the housing development encroaches.

In the not too distant future, with the expectation that urban infill projects continue, this entire Setzer operation in Sacramento will cease to exist and the history of this lumber mill will be a memoir of history.
