The shrubs in front of our house are exploding in these tiny white blossoms (this is a heavily cropped shot). Spring just can't wait any longer :-)

We had a birthday party at Chuck E Cheese for the Princess, her classmates and a few friends. I think everyone under the age of 12 had a great time, and I caught a few adults really enjoying some of the games too! Unfortunately when we got home the Princess was feeling ill and had a fever of 104.5F. So we've spent the weekend playing nurse and will get her to a doctor today since she is still feeling ill.

Needless to say this all stole my Flickr time away. But I plan to catch up later today. Have a good Monday everyone!

350 Seattle & Backbone Campaign joined forces to demand a stop to all Oil by rail transport. Using Guerrilla Light Projection and other creative tactics we threw a spotlight on this issue.

With multiple exploding oil train derailments in the span of one week, isn't it high time for a moratorium on all oil by rail transportation. Oil trains that have a blast zone of 5 miles should not be traveling underneath the city of Seattle. Together we can stop this dirty and dangerous threat to our communities.

the AP reported that the Department of Transportation has estimated there will be fifteen derailments of oil trains this year, like the one that happened in West Virginia last week. If it were to happen in downtown Seattle, it would be catastrophic. Join us in calling for a halt to all new permits for oil-by-rail infrastructure, and a revocation of all existing permits for the same.

Cheers.

The trees were exploding with color this morning as we arrived at church.

I had the wrong camera the day I was here and was lucky to be able to catch the exploding car mid flight. (Yes i can see it was on a pole)

See where this picture was taken. [?]

It happened a couple of minutes before I got there. My first thought was: "Holy crap, what if the tank car explodes!" But instead of running for cover, I whipped out my camera :)

Here's an excerpt from a Baltimore Business Journal article (Friday, December 7, 2007)

CSX train derails in South Baltimore

A CSX Transportation Inc. railcar carrying motor oil derailed Friday morning at the foot of South Baltimore's Tide Point business complex.

In a statement Friday, Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon said there appeared to be no hazardous leaks but that the incident "still warrants great concern for the safety of our city."

Friday's accident is the second CSX train derailment to occur in the city in the past two weeks. On Nov. 24, 12 CSX railcars carrying hazardous materials ran off the tracks in the 300 block of Stockholm Street, near M&T Bank Stadium.

For many, the location of that derailment conjured memories of another, more dramatic train accident -- the Howard Street tunnel derailment that caused a toxic chemical fire in July 2001.

No injuries were reported from Friday's derailment, according to the Baltimore Sun.

The Tide Point office complex is home to some of Baltimore's fastest-growing companies including Under Armour Inc., Advertising.com, and Struever Bros. Eccles and Rouse.

Seen in a courtyard in the Vatican. Perplexed us till we walked up to it and one of the guards gave it a push to send it spinning for quite some time. Struck me as a dystopian yet impressive bit of abstract art. (I'm sure I read about it while I was there, but this image is pretty old by now)

Edit: I read up on the sphere, and another Flickr user has done quite some research on it. Here is the link www.flickr.com/photos/o6scura/63977793/

Such spheres are found at quite a few places on a globe, and some in places of power too. The artist is Arnaldo Pomodoro. Wiki link: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arnaldo_Pomodoro

This was one of the HiJinx setups at the photography conference I went to this past weekend. The balloon was filled with corn starch and when popped, it set off a sound trigger that was hooked up to a strobe. Yes it’s been done before, but it was still fun to do in person =)

I really like the abstract quality of this one.

It's basically a firework inside a Rose, most of the stuff you can see coming out on the right is the fuse burning down (should have cut it shorter). Also the firework wasn't really inside the rose, more shoved towards the back of it - to really blow it apart I'd have had to bore a little hole for, but I'd made enough mess by the time I realised this.

Has given me some ideas for future shots though. There's just so many things to blow up!
