A nice architectural chat at the National Film Museum's cafeteria :-P

Apparently it was built to commemorate the capture of Suvarnadurg castle in India in 1775. So now you know!

At the Nowhere Else Festival, Peter Mulvey explained why intelligent life hasn't contacted us. It's a TED talk too: youtu.be/sNGUkdovn_8?t=2m16s

This photo is a composite of Peter Mulvey and a picture of the night sky I took in Enon, Ohio.

I kind of wonder how many Noh performers do that as their primary/sole occupation? Wonder too how they make a living doing it. I mean, sure, you charge money for tickets (and probably charge money for demonstrations like these too), but...

This fellow, if I remember right, is in line to become the head of the Ôe school (a branch of the Kanze school), so I guess I wouldn't be surprised if he and his master and a very small number of other people run the Nôgakudô as their primary/sole activity. And, I am sure they have plenty of students who pay for lessons, just as a hobby, or maybe for some as a more serious pursuit. But, do they also have professional members of their "troupe", so to speak? How many?

Anyway, I'm just envious they get to wear traditional clothing (and all kinds of different costumes) and to just be immersed in traditional culture everyday, as their normal everyday profession.

Virginia National Guard field artillery Soldiers explain the capabilities of the M119A2 howitzer, answer questions about the Guard and take part in a demonstration of 400 years of Virginia artillery during Military Through the Ages March 19, 2016, at Jamestown Settlement in Williamsburg, Virginia. Soldiers from the Hampton-based Battery B, 1st Battalion, 111th Field Artillery Regiment, 116th Infantry Brigade Combat Team represented the modern military at the event that features hundreds of historical re-enactors showing how uniforms, weapons and military tactics evolved through the centuries. The Virginia National Guard traces the traditions of Citizen-Solider service to the settlement’s founding in May 1607 and considers Jamestown to be its birthplace. Since 1607 when Capt. John Smith organized a militia to defend the colony there has not been a day without a military presence in Virginia to defend freedom at home and overseas. Can anyone explain - THE WHOLESOME SEA IS AT HER GATES. HER GATES BOTH EAST AND WEST. - (above the right door)(View large).

Isn't Google great. One click and you discover that the inscription was extracted from the poem "There is a Land", written by John A. Ritchie. Not sure why though!

One more click to discover - Canada has an enormous length of coastline which is separated into three

distinct regions by Alaska and Newfoundland. Of these three regions, east, north, and west, the north or arctic coast is by far the longest. Interest in Canada’s northern waters waxed and waned in the past three centuries, and at one time, if the lines of the poet are to be taken at their face value, the northern coastline was almost forgotten. In recent years, attention has once more been focused on the almost limitless areas to the north, and among other problems, those of defence demand a more intimate knowledge of Canadian arctic waters, whether open or ice covered. Well now we know!

The two tails of comet C/2015 V2 (Johnson) are becoming more opposite of each other as Earth approaches the comet's orbit plane. An analysis of three comet position angle vectors explains the phenomena.

Earth passes through the orbit plane of comet on 2017-May-31 07:41 UTC. The position angle of sun-comet radius vector will be opposite the position angle of the negative velocity vector. This results in the comet's ion tail being opposite that of its dust tail. Ion tails point away from the sun. The dust tail curves around toward the negative velocity vector. Tail particles lie along the orbit plane. When Earth passes through the orbit plane, the orbit plane is seen edge on and the tails can appear pencil like. In this orientation, the dust tail points toward the sun and is called an anomalous or anti-tail. Dust particles leaving the nucleus are repelled initially away from the sun and appear to curve around back toward the the orbital path. Dust tail particles further down the dust tail were emitted days or weeks later than dust particles in the tail nearer the head.

On the JPL Horizons ephemeris, Earth crosses the orbit of a target object when the term PlAng shifts sign, positive to negative or negative to positive.

PlAng = Angle between observer and target orbital plane, measured from center of target at the moment light seen at observation time leaves the target.

PsAng = The position angle of the extended Sun->target radius vector as seen in the observer's plane-of-sky, measured CCW (east) from reference frame North Celestial Pole.

PsAMV = The position angle of the the negative of the target's heliocentric velocity vector as seen in the observer's plane-of-sky, measured CCW (east) from reference frame North Celestial Pole.
