SN/NC: Syagrus romanzoffiana, Arecaceae Family

This is a palm with an identity crisis! A few decades ago the queen palm was assigned the name Cocos plumosa. During the late sixties and seventies most experts began referring to it as Arecastrum romanzoffianum. Now this queen has been placed in the genus Syagrus, the species name became romanzoffiana - hopefully Syagrus romanzoffiana will stick! The Queen palm is mostly found in Subtropical areas. It was once very popular as a garden tree; but in areas like Southern California where the climate is considerably dryer, it has since been taken over by other palms, such as Archontophoenix cunninghamiana, and other Archontophoenix as well, it is still the dominate pinnate palm, in places like Central Florida, where it thrives on the humidity, and tolerates the occasional 25 degree F. nights. Its fruit is edible to wildlife, often being sought after by birds. It was originally classified in the Coconut or Cocos genus, was moved to Arecastrum, then Syagrus. As a result of this, they often retain a previous name in retail trade. Usually called the "Cocos plumosa palm". (Palmpedia.net)

(Palmpedia.net)

The great majority is purple-blue. This one is a bit intermediate between white, purple and blue. Agapanthus /ˌæɡəˈpænθəs/ is the only genus in the subfamily Agapanthoideae of the flowering plant family Amaryllidaceae. The family is in the monocot order Asparagales. The name is derived from scientific Greek: αγάπη (agape) = love, άνθος (anthos) = flower.

Some species of Agapanthus are commonly known as lily of the Nile (or African lily in the UK), although they are not lilies and all of the species are native to Southern Africa (South Africa, Lesotho, Swaziland, Mozambique) though some have become naturalized in scattered places around the world (Australia, Great Britain, Mexico, Ethiopia, Jamaica, etc.) (Wikipedia)

A grande maioria é azul-roxo. I'm no expert when it comes to meteorology, but I certainly love photographing storms. Just before sunset on this evening, a very eventful system swept through the Chicago area, in some parts containing golf-ball-sized hail. My hometown of Evanston, Illinois was on the podium for some of the largest hail, but luckily my house sustained no damage.

This photo was taken right before the storm's main events. I ran outside right as the lightning began, but I didn't want to waste any time setting up a tripod, lest the torrential rain, or better yet hail, were to commence and therefore ruin any chance of a good photo. So I set my camera to 8 FPS continuous shooting, opened the aperture all the way, and set the ISO and shutter speed to what I thought was reasonable for the situation I was in. It took about 30 frames of continuous shooting to get this shot, but thanks to the power of RAW, I was able to extract loads of detail out of it. It's not cloud-to-ground, but it'll do.

HISTORY

Mushroom ketchup

Ketchup was historically prepared with mushrooms as a primary ingredient, rather than tomatoes.

In the United States, mushroom ketchup dates back to at least 1770, and was prepared by British colonists in the Thirteen Colonies.

Tomato ketchup

Many variations of ketchup were created, but the tomato-based version did not appear until around a century after other types.

An early recipe for "Tomato Catsup" from 1817 includes anchovies.

The term ketchup first appeared in 1682.

Ketchup recipes began to appear in British and then American cookbooks in the 18th century.

James Mease published the first known tomato ketchup recipe in 1812.

In 1824, a ketchup recipe using tomatoes appeared in The Virginia Housewife (an influential 19th-century cookbook written by Mary Randolph, Thomas Jefferson's cousin).

Tomato ketchup was sold locally by farmers.

Jonas Yerkes is credited as the first American to sell it in a bottle.

By 1837, he had produced and distributed the condiment nationally.

Shortly thereafter, other companies followed suit. F. & J. Heinz launched their tomato ketchup in 1876.

American cooks also began to sweeten ketchup in the 19th century.

The Webster's Dictionary of 1913 defined "catsup" as: "table sauce made from mushrooms, tomatoes, walnuts, etc. [Also written as ketchup]."

As the century progressed, tomato ketchup began its ascent in popularity in the United States. Tomato ketchup was popular long before fresh tomatoes were. People were less hesitant to eat tomatoes as part of a highly processed product that had been cooked and infused with vinegar and spices.

Heinz Tomato Ketchup was advertised: "Blessed relief for Mother and the other women in the household!", a slogan which alluded to the lengthy process required to produce tomato ketchup in the home.

With industrial ketchup production and a need for better preservation there was a great increase of sugar in ketchup, leading to the typically sweet and sour formula of today.

In Australia, it was not until the late 19th century that sugar was added to tomato sauce, initially in small quantities, but today it contains just as much as American ketchup and only differed in the proportions of tomatoes, salt and vinegar in early recipes.

While ketchup and tomato sauce are both sold in Australia, American ketchup is sweeter and thicker whereas Australian tomato sauce is more sour and runny.

Modern ketchup emerged in the early years of the 20th century, out of a debate over the use of sodium benzoate as a preservative in condiments.

Harvey W. Wiley, the "father" of the US Food and Drug Administration, challenged the safety of benzoate which was banned in the 1906 Pure Food and Drug Act.

In response, entrepreneurs including Henry J. Heinz, pursued an alternative recipe that eliminated the need for that preservative.

Katherine Bitting, a bacteriologist working for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, carried out research in 1909 that proved increasing the sugar and vinegar content of the product would prevent spoilage without use of artificial preservatives.

She was assisted by her husband, Arvil Bitting, an official at that agency.

Prior to Heinz (and his fellow innovators), commercial tomato ketchups of that time were watery and thin, in part because they used unripe tomatoes, which were low in pectin.

They had less vinegar than modern ketchups; by pickling ripe tomatoes, the need for benzoate was eliminated without spoilage or degradation in flavor.

But the changes driven by the desire to eliminate benzoate also produced changes that some experts (such as Andrew F. Smith) believe were key to the establishment of tomato ketchup as the dominant American condiment.

Sir Geoffrey is a true connoisseur of potions. Rumour has it, his library boasts no fewer than three thousand books on the subject, some dating all the way back to the 11th century.

“Potion-making is an art,” insists Sir Geoffrey. Painstakingly, he selects each ingredient. As he stirs, he scoops up the steam emanating from his enormous cauldron, inhales the fragrance, and closes his eyes in reverie. Then, with great ceremony, he dips a long spoon into the bubbling brew, lifts it carefully to his lips, and tastes. Time seems to stop. With a dreamy look, he rolls the hot liquid across his tongue. “Perfect,” he whispers.

At this particular moment, he is hanging from a branch laden with berries, like a Christmas tree heavy with ornaments. Sword in hand, he harvests the juiciest specimens for his experiments.

Sir Geoffrey is eagerly awaiting the moment when he resumes work on his star creation — the potion most people simply call mulled wine.

We watched the owl on the trees quietly in a cloudy snowy day. He flew into the trees in right front of me and caught the prey. Some people wanted to take the photo and immediately chased him around. I and another friend requested them to back off and not to disturb him and not to give him pressure.

We also asked people not to selfishly use the flash to shoot owls. Owls are very sensitive. Using flash will cause them to lose sight and could cause injuries and casualties. (Flash on owls could cause injuries and casualties problem, many bird experts published reports globally)

I hope we can respect wild animals and give them the inherent freedom and space. Do not just for taking pictures to get applause regardless of the means to enter the restricted area or to induce them by food

I woke up really early today, so I decided to get out into the magical summer morning with my GH2. For this shot I used the Chinon Expert MC Auto 135mm f/2.8.

The Peugeot Expert was one of the vans produced by Sevel from 1994 until 2006. These commercial vans were (like the minivans) jointly developed by PSA and Fiat and sold under the Citroën, Fiat and Peugeot brands. This one is from after the 2004 facelift of the model.

Until a few years ago this building in Clevedon's Triangle was The Clocktower pub, which took its name from the memorial just opposite that celebrates Queen Victoria's diamond jubilee. On Friday and Saturday evenings the pub used to add quite a bit of life to the centre of town, although not necessarily the kind that would be welcomed by all its citizens. I remember driving past one night and seeing blood-stained bodies laid out on the pavement - being tended to by their friends - presumably waiting for the emergency services to arrive. Just another normal Saturday night in a Somerset coastal town.
