Every year my wife and I plan a fall road trip and almost every year something or other happens which ends up postponing or canceling our trips. But everything came together for the year of 2016 and we managed to sneak away on a road trip to the Rockies of Colorado. Our road trip started in the San Juan Mountain range near Ridgway, and then we moved to Carbondale, Aspen, and then Salida before driving back to Montrose. My goal was to hit the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park on our drive back to Montrose from Salida.
As it turns out, Aspen didn’t hold our interest much and we ended up in Salida way earlier than expected. Our Airbnb host was a champ and allowed us to claim our room earlier than agreed. We had some free time and decided to surprise my wife with a quick trip to the Great Sand Dunes National park. My wife was not aware of a desert in Colorado and I kept her in the dark until we got a glance of it as we drove up to the park entrance.
We took a leisurely drive to the park with plenty of stops to photograph the interesting spots along the way. We reached the park just as the golden hour started. I underestimated one thing though, I underestimated the height of the dunes, there are truly enormous, and the wind was strong that day making the climb even more difficult. I planned to climb atop a medium-sized dune to shoot the sunset. Unfortunately, we ended up in a valley before a huge dune as the light show started. I desperately prayed for a dune climber to appear by the horizon, but none showed up.
WIP. Sorry about the lighting. This is the Superhero category, and probably the last I'll do unless someone wants me to do one of their categories.

The Western Treatment Plant is a wonderful place to see a range of raptors, but don't expect them to be always posing like this. This was shot from my bird-hide (my car) as we immediately stopped when we saw this fellow. It was a wonderful day of spotting birds, but over half my opportunities for photos were lost as the camera refused to focus, and when I did shoot, a great number were hopelessly blurred. I still had a lot of enjoyment and will keep fiddling with my controls. On Saturday last, I could only get it to take a single photo - the shutter button wouldn't respond, no matter how often or hard I pressed it.
It may or may not be a surprise to you, but I didn't expect to see so many hidden "Five Dollars" words in a $5 USD bill. I thought they were just patterns in the border. =D
I think the actual font size is less or around 1/10th of a millimeter. =D

A "Wow" Maternity Session with a Nashville Recording Artist at Her Home. Such a loving and precious person!
I wasn't quite expecting this kind of sunrise when I got up at 5:30am and took the drive down here, to St Michael's Mount, on Tuesday morning. It was windy but beautiful and with the terrible weather that has followed, I'm so glad I made the effort.
I was pretty excited to get out my 16-35mm and use it for the first time since loosing it in the Lake District. Thankfully it was found and is now safe and sound back where it belongs, on my camera!

Just love the way it's taking off on little tippy toes, all I've got are deer pics from Bradgate Park at the moment, I'm like a little lost sheep in the evenings without foxes to go and see.
Not sure I expected any sort of shot at ISO 12800 on a grey afternoon, shot from the distance I shot it., with a 2x extender, but the wonders of Dxo helped out.

Working my way through some editing tonight while I upload images for Getty... and I couldn't resist sharing one more image tonight, also of a sweet treat. This time, it's the cake that Katie and I made.
Image made with a Hasselblad 500 C/M.

Expecting Bulleid Pacific No 35018 I was somewhat disappointed when a couple of Duffs appeared on the SSE!
Newly painted Class 47 No 47815 (two tone green) and 47848 (West Coast maroon) head 1Z24, the 07.40 Carnforth - Scarborough 'Scarborough Spa Express'.
Seen here passing the caged semaphore at Weaverthorpe.
One of the defining features of Oswestry depot over recent years was the sheer volume of unusual or unexpected vehicles that would turn up, often for a matter of days or weeks only, but occasionally staying a little longer to enliven the scene. Here Arriva Midlands, Shrewsbury P&R liveried Dennis Dart SLF 2305 - N305 ENX is pictured while on loan at the depot, having been displaced from its home town by a batch of brand new Optare Versas.
Sometimes when you least expect it and are not prepared for it the most spectacular events unfold right in front of your eyes. After having a disappointing day of photographing we had called it quits and were gonna grab dinner and head home, untill my friend spotted these Great Horned Owls. This was probably one of the most memorable encounters I have ever had with wildlife. The Male here takes off as he sets off to hunt on a dark Florida night.
Another image from the butterfly house at the Durham Museum of Life and Science. I don't have a macro lens, and so made do with the Nikkor 50m f/1.4D. This is uncropped, and was able to get fairly close for the likely reason the butterflies are so used to humans.
You'll notice that the blur is much more than you'd expect with just f2.8, but that's because the camera was so close; it exaggerates the DOF.
I'm trying to take my photography to the next level, and this was an experiment using some of the lighting ideas from Welcome to Oz by Vincent Versace.
Having checked the Watercress Line's website earlier in the week, I was expecting only diesels to be hauling trains this weekend due to the hot, dry weather and associated fire risk. That made it a nice surprise when I heard a whistle in the distance and saw S15 Class 506 heading up the hill from Alresford.
Locomotive: LSWR Urie S15 Class 4-6-0 506.
Location: Northside Lane foot crossing near Ropley, Mid-Hants Railway/Watercress Line, Hampshire.
I'm approximately one year into fanning on the CP North Toronto sub and in the 13ish months, I've learned to never be suprised at anything CP does. With rumors flying left right and center about the SD70ACUs being mandated trailing locomotives, it was both suprising and not suprising (becuase CP) that one was going to be the sole power on a Chicago to Toronto autorack train. Fast forward a day, CP 2-240 is in Wolverton with CP 7058 and they decide to lift UP 4101 (Who came into Wolverton on a different train). Also; shocker, they were running light power to Toronto with a lift at Hornby. Unexpectedly (or maybe it should be expected), they lifted 3 tankers in Hornby and continued east, not stopping (aside from getting blocked by GO) until Toronto yard.
When I say expect the unexpected, its in reference to these sub 10 car trains that routinely see on "autorack" trains.

Very dissapointed with this shoot. I expected a heck of alot more out of this doll and all her pictures came out terrible. I took her out for two shoots. She did improve the secound shoot ,but still wasn't perfect. In the end I only have myself to blame. Snow White is next week, and I'm going to try my hardest to do much better.
Well I was not expecting to see this little fellow at the Highland Wildlife Park it was just so special for me. I honestly cannot remember the last time I saw a red squirrel for myself. The Highland Wildlife Park do have feeder boxes out for the squirrels they do feed them hazelnuts but the squirrels also forage for buds, fungi, insects and berries. This wee one sat for what seemed a while and I enjoyed watching it. This was an extremely good start to my outing to the park.

One would hardly expect this little country idyll along a highway, yet one finds this along the A44 between Warmond and Lisse.
2nd Surprise of the Day in Colour
I love Peking Duck but have never seen how it is made. Our first surprise came in a market where this guy was doing Peking Duck the traditional way (even if in a metal in stead of a clay oven). He kindly allowed me to take photos of the process. The golden ones are cooked, the white ones uncooked. The rest is self-explanatory.
Went Walkies yesterday, looking for one thing unsuccessfully but found many other surprises in this amazing city.
Looks like our resident deer may have more babies again this year. The deer on the other side of the tree is from her first litter and the brother was hit by a car. The two that were born from last year are no longer seen. We don't know what happened to them, it was too early for them to leaver their mother. A bit sad but I suppose that is what happens.
I've finally finished it!
I started this in early August of last year and after many months being untouched I've finally completed it to a presentable standard.
One thing I'm not too happy with however are the cliffs but I hadn't the money or patience to tear it down and restart.
The rear side and the left side are made up of Technic bricks so I could potentially expand it in the future if I ever feel the need to. Who knows!
Well I'd love to hear what you guys think, I'm expecting to receive a hell of a lot of suggestions and ideas so maybe in the near future I'll revisit parts of it.
Inspiration taken from numerous builders.
Not what you were expecting to surface?

FATSO
SOLID COLD
BNFE 12423
This is the infamous FATSO Solid Cold from Reefer Madness. It is also the last Solid Cold. It rolled into the scrap yard this morning (3/8/2010). Me and the crew got to bench this before it went to the scrapper. This is a stitched panorama made from 8 original photos.
To all those who made this catch possible, THANK YOU.
