The classic Art Deco interior of all red seating, mahogany and mirrors has changed little since World War II. Like its main rival, Les Deux Magots, it has hosted most of the French intellectuals during the post-war years. It is said that Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir would meet here and discuss their philosophy of existentialism over a drink

Bob Solomon (September 14, 1942 – January 2, 2007), with dog on leash, was the best professor I ever studied under. I took his existentialism class at the University of Texas during the summer of 1976. Words cannot express how good a professor and human being he was. This is my second sculpture based on the themes of towers and existentialism. It began with Christopher Titus’ podcast episode “Secede Please”. At the point that it was released, Obama had just been voted in for his 2nd term as President of the U.S. and some states decided they wanted out. This links to my theme of existentialism because around two thirds of those states’ population had made the choice of not voting. The television with wires trapping the bird represents the effect of the media on America. One dollar bills have George Washington (fore-father of America) printed on them, his utopia of freedom is no longer “one Nation under God, indivisible” – their recent presidential election has proved this. It was because of the now washed up and overused American Dream, and the tax redistribution that is pulling America apart, that I chose to use photocopies of a dollar bill to create the feathers of the rough form of the American national bird, the Bald Eagle.

Most of my skyscapes have power lines running through them. It's a subtle reminder of the energy that's constantly flowing through our lives--from the framework of electricity that powers our lights and appliances, to the electromagnetic radiation of our cellphones, to the rays of the sun. The tiny electrical current in your iPod headphones. The packets of data that form the Internet. The voices of our friends travel to us as waves of energy in the air. And when our brains process them, that's pulses of energy moving from one spot to another as well. Our existence, in every way imaginable, is based on the flow of energy. Through power lines.
I should really Photoshop them out.
