A pot by Grayson Perry from his current exhibition at the Victoria Miro Gallery, London.
I loved this pot called The Existential Void. It includes a deeply psychological portrait of the artist on the left. The tapestries from the same show, depicting the rise and fall of a geek, are visually stunning and pack a strong emotional punch as well as being very funny. I strongly recommend this exhibition.

This is the only photo of this band that seems to have caught each member in their own existential kind of vibe, that was in essence, the Damnation of Adam Blessing.
Just as our musical style seemed to shift from song to song, a band without "their own sound", some critics said, yet all over the musical palette. So were the personalities. This picture seems to have captured that vibe. You can see that in each members body language, and expression. Taken on a street corner in Tremont in 1971 by a hippie photographer UA flew into Cleveland from, (where else), San Francisco.
We'd been shooting stills for the third album cover all day, and wound up in, what at the time was one of the hard core industrial areas of Cleveland. Behind the band you can see a street corner, and a bar. Just as we rapped up the shoot about eight steel workers came out of the bar. As soon as they saw the, "FUCKING HIPPIES", as they put it, they charged. No words were even exchanged, not by us. We were hauling ass for Adam Blessing's Grandma's 1962 Chrysler Imperial, (as BIG as a whale, as they say).
So who do you think had to stop running to pick up an empty garbage can, (one of those old heavy galvanized steel cans), to fling at the steel workers? Adam Blessing of course.
Adam's brother Ken had been driving the behemoth all day, he already had it running, with only Adam and I left to climb in. As I started to get in I looked back to see Adam with the can raised high over his head. As soon as he let it fly, they were on him. As Kenny started to drive off, I screamed, "it looks like they're fucking killing him, we have to go back"!
Kenny said, "we'll drive downtown to the police station and report it". The others agreed that would be the safest thing to do. I said, "pull the fuck over, I'm goin' back".

The first warm day of the year (Easter Monday) and Alex took me for a walk around Stourport-on-Seven. The town is at the junction of the River Severn and the Stourport Ring, details from Wikipedia below:-
The Stourport Ring is a connected series of canals forming a circuit, or canal ring, around Worcestershire, The Black Country and Birmingham in central England. The ring is formed from the River Severn, the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal, the Stourbridge Canal, the Dudley Canals, the Birmingham Canal Navigations (Netherton Tunnel Branch Canal and Birmingham New Main Line) and the Worcester and Birmingham Canal.
The ring is 74 miles and includes 105 locks including 3 electrically operated river locks, 2 pairs of staircase locks and 2 broad locks. The route includes flights of locks at Tardebigge (x30), Stourbridge (x16) and the Black Delph at Brierley Hill (x8). The route also includes two of the longest navigable tunnels on the UK network, these being the Netherton and Wast Hills Tunnels.
The ring has an alternative longer route via Wolverhampton of 83 miles and 122 locks and does not include the Stourbridge or Dudley canals. This route uses the connection between the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal, and the BCN Main Line at Aldersley Junction.
The ring is popular for cruising and has a number of narrowboat hire centres on the route including Alvechurch, Viking Afloat (Worcester), Anglo-Welsh (Tardebigge), Brook Line (Dunhampstead) and Black Prince (Stoke Prior).
Whittington Lock on the S&W Canal
Popular visitor attractions on or close to the Stourport Ring include Cadbury World, The Black Country Living Museum, the Severn Valley Railway, Kinver Edge, the Birmingham Jewellery Quarter, Brindleyplace plus the Merry Hill, Bullring and Mailbox shopping centres.
Popular overnight mooring places on the ring include Worcester city centre, Stourport Basin, Wolverley, Kinver, Merry Hill, Windmill End, The Black Country Museum (via short detour), Gas Street Basin, Hopwood, Stoke Works and Dunhampstead.
Walking on foot brings you down to the very stark, naked core of existence. We travel too much in airplanes and cars. It’s an existential quality that we are losing. It’s almost like a credo of religion that we should walk.
There is, of course, something inherently romantic—if not heroic—about the extreme solitary explorer enveloped by nature. The very image of Herzog on foot recalls the iconic 19th-century paintings of Caspar David Friedrich, especially his Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog, with its lone figure staring out at the wide vista above the clouds.
'Truth itself wanders through the forests,' Herzog writes near the end. Yet here he embroiders his memories for effect: The vast swath of geography between Munich and Paris is littered with industrial towns and cities.
Once he comes out on the other end, traversing the deforested Champs-Élysées (“We were close to what they call the breath of danger”), Herzog emerges victorious.

In this painting by Cui Xiuwen titled "Existential Emptiness No. 16", the schoolgirl is placed right in the center of a snowy background, which has the appearance of a serene Chinese ink landscape. The girl sitting in a state of Zen and peacefulness draws the audiences' attention to gaze on her lifeless face. It is instantaneous for the eyes to be drawn to her porcelain-like skin texture, her black shiny hair neatly lined just above her eyes, and her carefully placed hands on her knees half covered by the high socks. From Cui's works, the viewer feels the existence of contemporary and traditional subjects fusing as one.

I first heard about this when I was 21, while I was dwelling on my own existential anguish, fueled by reading JD Salinger, Sartre and Kafka literature. Ten years later, this essay/spoken word song still rings true. Please read throughout because i really hope it enlightens whoever reads it the way it did me.
If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it. The long term benefits of sunscreen have been proven by scientists whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience. I will dispense this advice now.
Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth. Nevermind. You will not understand the power and beauty of your youth until they have faded. But trust me, in 20 years you’ll look back at photos of yourself and recall in a way you can’t grasp now how much possibility lay before you and how fabulous you really looked.
You’re not as fat as you imagine.
Don’t worry about the future; or worry, but know that worrying is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubblegum.
The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that never crossed your worried mind; the kind that blindside you at 4pm on some idle Tuesday.

Enjoy your body, use it every way you can. Don’t be afraid of it, or what other people
think of it, it’s the greatest instrument you’ll ever own..
Dance. Even if you have nowhere to do it but in your own living room. Read the directions, even if you don’t follow them.
Do NOT read beauty magazines, they will only make you feel ugly.
Get to know your parents, you never know when they’ll be gone for good.
Be nice to your siblings; they are the best link to your past and the people most likely to stick with you in the future.
Understand that friends come and go,but for the precious few you should hold on. Work hard to bridge the gaps in geography and lifestyle because the older you get, the more you need the people you knew when you were young.
Live in New York City once, but leave before it makes you hard; live in Northern California once, but leave before it makes you soft.
Travel.
Accept certain inalienable truths, prices will rise, politicians will philander, you too will get old, and when you do you’ll fantasize that when you were young prices were reasonable, politicians were noble and children respected their elders. Respect your elders.
Don’t expect anyone else to support you. Maybe you have a trust fund, maybe you have a wealthy spouse; but you never know when either one
might run out.
Don’t mess too much with your hair, or by the time you're 40, it will look 85.
Be careful whose advice you buy, but, be patient with those who supply it. Advice is a form of nostalgia, dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than
it’s worth.

Not feeling great today (thankfully my day off each week - I'm sure that must make the week somehow easier; I do like being out of sync with externally-imposed paces and timescales) so had a visit to my GP this morning and gathered up my regular prescriptions. I've had a few discussions with people about medicating mental health recently so thought this might make a good subject for a post!
When I was 15 I was diagnosed with depression (later bipolar disorder) and had to make some decisions about what to do with this information and how to cope with this debilitating way of life. As an impressionable youngster there was one rule foremost in my mind: no drugs!! I was having enough of an existential crisis as it was without throwing the nature of my identity and reality into doubt by suggesting that by chemically altering myself I could think truer thoughts!
I was fairly certain that, although I felt completely dysfunctionally terrible a lot of the time, my thoughts were the result of clear perception and true rationalisation. As such, the idea of handing them over to some pharma company and asking them to brainwash me felt tantamount to injecting myself with Prozium! Why would anyone voluntarily submit to that?? I heard horror stories about Lithium, the then-drug of choice for treating bipolar, and I couldn't bear the notion of submitting myself to such atrocities!
Instead, I saw GPs, therapists, psychiatrists, a homeopath, an acupuncturist, religious leaders; I tried changing my fashion style, I took up different sports, I changed schools. All of these changes and explorations I'm certain helped me develop into the person I am now, and regular change and variety of lifestyle certainly helped me to avoid getting stuck in an identity rut as 'a depressed person'; but ultimately none of these actions helped me overcome the underlying problem.
It only took one term into my university life for me to crack; I had developed somniphobic tendencies and could only sleep in the day with loud music on and my computer on dressed to go out; in effect, I had to pretend I wasn't about to go to sleep! I got so exhausted that I went to my GP asking for sleeping pills, and she told me that while she wasn't prepared to give me sleeping pills, she could prescribe me Prozac (fluoxetine) and that would probably make me sleep anyway. Having reached this point of too many stresses piling up, I finally agreed.
Now it turns out that Prozac just happens to be one of the worst drugs I could have taken, but that's not the point; the point is that I 'broke the seal'; I spent a year trying out prescription medication to combat the chaos in my head, and while it was a really destructive thing for me at the time, it did show me that you can balance things a little bit that way - it certainly helped me sleep - in fact I lost my part-time job because I couldn't get up in the morning for a fortnight!
Ten years later I've tried out several rounds of SSRI prescriptions. I'm not resistant like I used to be - not least because I found out of course that the real problem was that I needed Levothyroxine medication daily, so if I have to take that every day for the rest of my days, what's really so different about taking SSRIs? Thyroxine affects my mood and thought patterns just as profoundly; in fact I feel its absence far more noticeably. But having experienced fragments of peaceful living, bereft of the brain tumult and dramatic despair and blank apathy that have dogged my days in the past, there's just no difficulty choosing these days - I start a course of anti-depressants the second I can feel the cold fingers creeping into my brain!
I don't usually take them for more than 4-6 months at a time, but I am more than happy to take them now; I feel like I don't have the time anymore to want to 'beat' something on my own! As far as I'm concerned the battle is a chemical one and needn't be fought in my mind. If I've got something that works, and I'm used to predicting my behaviour, then it's just a perfect solution for me! Sure there are side effects to most things, but they do pass after a few weeks; and actually, Sertraline is one of the most benign things I've tried, though this is a low dose so perhaps it is more invasive in higher dosage?
I used to also get problems with psychosomatic vomiting - which started at the same time as the sleep problems at university and never really left! However, since meeting Tom my incidence of nausea has radically decreased, so maybe there IS a cure! For the times when there isn't, Motilium (domperidone) will sort you out - you can buy this OTC in pharmacies but it's pretty poor value; I think you can only buy 2 packs of 6 pills at a time or something, because they don't want you using it to mask symptoms I would imagine.
StilNoct (Zolpidem Tartrate) is my ill-advised love; an instant hit to send me to sleep with a rosy glow in the morning! It's too addictive to take long term but like codeine-based painkillers, when you really need it (like now, for me!) it's just the thing to send you to sleep without too much brain-clattering for hours on end! Otherwise I just use Benedryl.
I still suck at remembering to take paracetamol or ibuprofen though. I'm not a huge fan of taking pills if you can get away with not doing; but I think when it comes to mental health concerns, it's just not that big a deal. Life is much better when you feel like you're in the right state of mind to live it!
Today I have been getting in the right state of mind with the aid of the completely amazing Katzenjammer (thanks to Clare's previous post about their brilliance) so I invite you to enjoy some sea-shanty gypsy folk with an electroswing bent in the form of A Bar in Amsterdam! (It reminds me of some of the music from Mysterious Cities of Gold!) They are my new favourite band. They even do a cover of Lands of Confusion (AND it's really good) so that's basically a winner right there!
Walking on foot brings you down to the very stark, naked core of existence. We travel too much in airplanes and cars. It’s an existential quality that we are losing. It’s almost like a credo of religion that we should walk.
There is, of course, something inherently romantic—if not heroic—about the extreme solitary explorer enveloped by nature. The very image of Herzog on foot recalls the iconic 19th-century paintings of Caspar David Friedrich, especially his Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog, with its lone figure staring out at the wide vista above the clouds.
'Truth itself wanders through the forests,' Herzog writes near the end. Yet here he embroiders his memories for effect: The vast swath of geography between Munich and Paris is littered with industrial towns and cities.
Once he comes out on the other end, traversing the deforested Champs-Élysées (“We were close to what they call the breath of danger”), Herzog emerges victorious.
