2014 Closing Exercises 2014

Congratulations, Class of 2014!

Studio 26, exercises from The Art of Seeing

#10 -- Sit & watch your pet – sleeping or awake, focused on you or not. Observe different parts & details –Take new shots of what catches your eye – zoom in for detail. It’s OK if your pet moves – follow, or else keep taking a variety of shots from wherever. Then assemble a collage of your favorite shots, with whatever space between or means of connection or background you wish.

As I sat on a stool at my kitchen counter, I looked down to see Cooper sound asleep with his head between the legs of the stools as in the top left photo. My camera was handy so I took a series of shots from my perch of him wedged under the stools against the cabinet and wall ... happily he did not move when I got up to capture all of him as in the bottom photo!

Having seen a Photoshopped color version of this photograph (located here on Flickr), my instructor in a March 2009 street photography class suggested that I convert it to black-and-white to accentuate the vertical shapes of the fence behind the runner.

I've done so here, using Apple's Aperture program, and with a yellow filter applied to the initial image. I think the result is interesting, and I'll try to keep an open mind for a while before deciding whether I like it better than the color version. However, if you have strong opinions one way or the other, I'd enjoy hearing it; leave me Flickr-mail or email me at ed at yourdon dot com

I was walking south along the bridle path that circumnavigates the reservoir in Central Park; and the view here is basically south, with the CitiCorp building and varous other New York City skyscrapers in the background. The reservoir is enclosed by a fence (presumably to keep people from falling in, or jumping in to swim, or perhaps even attempting to fish), and there's a jogging trail that runs along the fence; so scenes like this are pretty common.

I hadn't taken the sun into account when I took this picture; during this season, it's pretty far south, and for whatever reason, it left the runner in pretty dark shadow. I tweaked it a bit, and hopefully didn't distort the background too badly. I also replaced the grayish-white hazy sky with a bluish gradient fill ...

Note: the color version of this photo has been published twice, as of March 14, 2009: in a Feb 26, 2009 blog article titled "How to Intensify Your Running and Lose More Weight.." and in a blog article (allegedly published on May 21, 2006 - which is difficult to imagine, since I didn't take the picture until Nov 21, 2008) entitled "Burn Twice as Many Calories Running."

This B/W version of the photo was published in an Oct 14, 2009 blog titled "Egyedül vagy társasággal?" And it was published in an Apr 22, 2010 blog titled "Demand Justice For the Wrongfully Convicted Central Park Five." It was also published in a Jul 15, 2010 blog titled "Let AudioTechnica help you run longer..." And it was published in a Nov 22, 2010 Fresh Healthy Body blog titled " Any other good exercises to lose weight rather than running?"

Moving into 2011, the photo was published in a Jan 17, 2011 blog titled "Two Best Exercises to Lose Weight." It was also published in an Apr 1, 2011 blog titled "Sweet! Candy eaters surprisingly slimmer."

Moving into 2013, the photo was published in a Feb 24, 2013 blog titled "Why Do I Want To Run Startup?" It was also published in an undated (early Jun 2013) blog titled "ABNEHMEN: ES GIBT KEIN GEHEIMREZEPT."

Located in Niceville, FL--just across the bridge from Destin and a short drive from Eglin Air Force Base, CrossFit Emerald Coast is not your ordinary gym. We don't have acres of shiny isolation exercise equipment, thousands of dollars worth of treadmills and elliptical machines (complete with their LCD screens or magazine racks), wall to wall mirrors, or a smoothie bar.

What we do offer is the most effective workout program possible! We are serious about real fitness. Our equipment is simple, extremely functional, and has application to daily life regardless of your occupation. Furthermore, our workouts typically last less than 25 minutes and are exceedingly more effective than spending hours doing isolation movements or trudging away on a treadmill. In fact, you will typically warm up, workout, cool down, and be on your way in less than 60 minutes! In as few as 2 sessions per week, you will quickly observe significant and quantifiable results in your fitness levels--even if you thought you were in 'good shape' when you started!

At CrossFit Emerald Coast, you will be trained by a certified personal trainer in either private sessions or in a small group during our regularly scheduled classes. No longer do you need to worry about planning your workout--we assign the WOD (Workout of the Day) to you when you arrive and help you perform it safely and effectively.

We understand you may feel intimidated about training with us--don't worry! Even though the WOD may look difficult or nearly impossible to the mere mortal, every workout is scalable to your abilities. We all have a starting place. In fact, it is not uncommon to have a 16 year old football player, a 26 year old service member, a 36 year old accountant, and a 67 year-old retiree in a class doing the exact same workout together! If you have any questions or concerns, our trainers are very experience in helping you properly and safely scale your workout. We promise those of you saying, "I could never do that!" will soon be saying, "I can't believe I just did that!" We see it all the time!

CrossFit training is hard--we won't water it down. You will be physically and mentally challenged each and every time you step through the door. However, your biggest obstacle is not our WOD--it is your motivation. The most difficult step is the first one. All you need to do is pay us a visit and we'll take it from there! True fitness requires more than a new gym membership--it is a change in lifestyle.

CrossFit will change the way you approach fitness for the rest of your life. We are ready to help you get started. Are you?
