Orientation: the blinking yellow and black arrow lets you know where you are and what direction you are facing.
Route Decision: done by your own choice, based on your eyes' judgements on how quickly you can get there or other factors such as avoiding certain enemies.
Route Monitoring: as you move, the arrow moves and lets you know where you are going.
Destination Recognition: once you arrive at your destination, a teal colored square lets you know exactly where to go and you can interact with it once you're close enough. (I take no credit of this picture.)
