Example of a gun position constructed along the ridge line using cement bags.

--------------

Wolf Ridge, a rugged spine of coastal grassland and low chaparral, is the divide between the Rodeo and Tennessee Valleys in the Marin Headlands. In the years leading to World War II the "1937 Project for the Harbor Defenses of San Francisco" led to the formation of Fort Cronkhite and the construction of Battery Townsley with its massive 16” guns. The maturation of military aviation in the two decades since World War I caused fundamental changes in coastal defense. Coastal artillery needed the concealment and cover provided by casemated construction and antiaircraft guns were positioned to defend the batteries.

Wolf Ridge was the location of Antiaircraft Battery No. 1 consisting of three 3" Antiaircraft Gun Model M1917 and their mounts, a storeroom, a power plan and aiming stations. In a 1993 assessment, the GGNRA concluded that Antiaircraft Battery No. 1 is the finest surviving example of an antiaircraft artillery emplacement of the World War II era in the system of seacoast defenses that protected the San Francisco Bay area.

While hiking along Wolf Ridge one encounters remnants of defensive positions, some quite modest, that still convey the sense of urgency that must have dominated preparations precipitated by the attack on Pearl Harbor. An attack on the West Coast was not out of the question. Along the ridge are several gun positions constructed by stacking hundreds of cement bags. I imagine, but have not confirmed, that these held 50-caliber machine guns. Elsewhere there are level platforms for larger guns.

The aiming and command center for the antiaircraft guns is located about a thousand feet east of the gun positions. It appears that the facility was hastily constructed – large trenches dug, rooms framed (at least one as a quonset hut), and then the network of rooms and tunnels covered with a backfill of earth leaving a height finding station and director pit at the surface. Some of the underground rooms were quite large, on the order of 13’ by 60’. These were camouflaged and the director pit, location of a mechanical gun director computer, featured a sliding roof.

The command center is now in ruin. The underground rooms have partially collapsed. The earth cover has washed away to reveal some of the tunnels that allowed underground circulation and access to the surface aiming stations. Portions of the site have traces of fencing that I think date from the Nike Missile era.

Photographing Wolf Ridge was difficult. The winds were turbulent and I had my first real camera crash in several years (damage easily repaired). I plan to return and shoot it again.

Airgraphs were introduced in 1941 to make the transportation of large quantities of mail to and from troops easier. Messages were written onto a special form that was then given an identification number and photographed onto microfilm. The microfilm was flown to its destination, developed into a full size print, and posted to the recipient.

Sending 1600 airgraphs on microfilm weighed just 5oz compared to 50lbs for the same number of letters. Copies of the microfilm were kept so that if they were shot down the messages could be resent.

This camouflage is an example of an attempt to avoid being seen by a bird or other predator; the locust borer has done well combining it with mimicry, quite convincingly resembling a yellow jacket

Locust Borer Longhorn Beetle – 2020OCT02 – Charlotte, NC

I went to harvest goldenrod for goldenrod tea, finding in the bountiful blossoms a breathtaking bonus: a beauteous beetle!

Spectacular arrays of brilliant yellow flowers attract throngs of insects intent on collecting and consuming the nutritious large and rather sticky pollen from myriads of small flowers on each plant, a magnet for late summer and early autumn insects, this wasp-striped longhorn beetle among the most eye-catching, especially important to it as a mimic (Batesian mimicry, something harmless imitating something dangerous): looks like a bee or a wasp but cannot sting.

Many insects, like this locust borer, try very hard to imitate bees (called bee mimics) and wasps, and do a surprisingly good job of it!

Hope you enjoy this 25% of 213 captures I took here this day!

This is an example of what I mean about how the model shoots would consist of several poses showing the same feel and emotion that would be conveyed for the cover artwork of a book.

This particular book, "The Case of the Close Encounter" is an excellent example of the children's mystery series from the 1980s called "The New Bobbsey Twins" This was one of my favourites (and still is)

SPOILER ALERT: Basically, Bert was babysitting a youngster who was quite hyper (he was taking over for Nan who was ill). The two are out in the driveway when Bert sees a UFO! (So, the book cover is a bit misleading as it represents all the twins spotting it) There is quite a spooky and interesting feel to this one. And of course, it's not little green men, but a super secret silent helicopter stolen from the government by spies! That's what I like about the first half of the New Bobbsey series-there is intrigue and really important cases for our heroes to solve. Such a disappointment that books 18-30 totally revamped the series, and had them solving such crimes as who stole a batch of chocolate chip cookies! UGH! It's like James Bond suddenly investigating a convenience store holdup after all those books (and movies) of him stopping fiends who want to take over the world!

This example of Maritimo's M48 Cruising Motor Yacht has always been professionally maintained and will pass the fussiest of buyer's inspection. Whether you're in the market for a near new or pre-loved vessel, take a close look at this highly optioned example.

This vessel is fully air conditioned and provides her owner: two staterooms plus a third cabin, the owner's stateroom features a designer styled bathroom, plus a second luxury bathroom. The large open plan galley / saloon is equipped with everything to please the chef in us all, and the leather appointed saloon provides a comfortable environment to relax.

Take the internal stair case to the fully enclosed air conditioned flybridge where you will find another lounging area, plus outdoor area, and of course a fully equipped helm station.

The Maritimo design features a variable dead-rise hull, forward mounted engines (two Cummins 670hp diesels) and mid ships positioned fuel tanks (3500 litres), which provides a perfect poise meaning when you apply the power you'll never bury the stern or ride bow high.

Power is never an issue on-board with a 17.5kva generator, and water is always on available thanks to the installed water maker. Navigation is extensive and includes autopilot, radar, and twin C120 Raymarine head units.

Maritimo is Australia's most awarded boat builder and you would be hard pressed to find any cruiser with so many luxurious appointments woven seamlessly into its design.

St Brigid’s RC Church built in 1881 is a fine example of Irish neo-Gothic architecture. The belfry spire was completed in 1903 and the interior of the church is fitted out with carved stonework, marble alter and high quality stained glass windows. The church was completed to the designs of William Hague (1840-1899) who was also architect for many other neo-Gothic style buildings across Ireland.

Ardagh is an Irish Heritage Village about 7 miles outside Longford town. The present village with its small green, the Fetherston clock tower and picturesque stone houses all date from the 1860’s, built to house some of the workers from the Fetherston estate. Older buildings include St. Patrick’s Church of Ireland in the village (c.1810) and within its grounds is what’s believed to be the remains of a stone church dating from the 8th century. St. Patrick’s church renovations were complete in 2012 and on the day I was there, work was still in progress reconstructing part of its perimeter stone wall. Nearby are the ruins of a 17th (?) century church built on the site of an earlier medieval church and behind that is Ardagh House built by the Fetherston family during the early 18th century.

VERY cool, thanks for sharing this! I’ve seen some of this kind of art before, but hadn’t seen quite as good a collection as this. I especially liked the one where they made the trees look like they were “on fire” — that was particularly impressive. Thanks again. //Steve//

A fine first edition example of Guillaume De L’Isle’s important 1724 map of Persia. Covers from the Crimea and the Sea of Azov south to the Persian Gulf and the Straight of Ormuz and east as far as Kashmir (Cachmir) and Kabul (Caboul). This map includes modern day Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan, with adjacent parts of Russia, Pakistan, Turkey, Ukraine, and Kazakhstan, and Arabia. Cartographically De L’Isle’s mapping of Persia marks a significant advance in European cartographic knowledge of the region. This map benefits considerably from Russian cartographic surveys and other sources no doubt smuggled to Guillaume De L’Isle by his brother Nicholas de L’Isle, who held a cartographic position with the Russian Academy of Sciences. The extent to which Russian data influenced this map is nowhere more evident than in De L’Isle’s remarkable rendering of the Caspian Sea – one of the first accurate maps of the great lake to follow Van Verden’s historic survey of 1721. Russian cartographic information is also apparent with regard to place names, such as the Russian name for the Aral Sea (Glouchoiye). It is equally likely that De L’Isle drew on Russian sources for his mapping of the Silk Route centers of Bukhara, Samarkand, and Ferghana, which were known stopping points for Russian trade envoys to China. For the remainder of Persia De L’Isle most likely updated Persian and Arabic cartographic information with reports from Georgian and Armenian traders and mercenaries active throughout Persia. It may be through these sources that De L’Isle was able to add considerable geographic information regarding trade routes and place names in central Persia. These include such significant advances as the identification of Terheran (Tiheran), the current capital of Iran, which is notable absent it earlier European maps of Persia. This map was drawn by Guillaume De L’Isle and engraved by P. Starckman. It issued independently as well as included in a number of composite atlases including De L’Isle’s 1731 Atlas de Geographie . A number of reissues by Buache, Covens & Mortier, and others followed.

The Church of the Holy Saviour in Chora (Turkish: Kariye Camii) is considered to be one of the most beautiful surviving examples of a Byzantine church. The church is situated in Istanbul, in the Edirnekapı neighborhood, which lies in the western part of the municipality of Fatih. In the 16th century, during the Ottoman era, the church was converted into a mosque and, finally, it became a museum in 1948. The interior of the building is covered with fine mosaics and frescoes.

The Chora Church was originally built as part of a monastery complex outside the walls of Constantinople, to the south of the Golden Horn.

The majority of the fabric of the current building dates from 1077–1081, when Maria Dukaina, the mother-in-law of Alexius I Comnenus, rebuilt the Chora Church as an inscribed cross or quincunx: a popular architectural style of the time. Early in the 12th century, the church suffered a partial collapse, perhaps due to an earthquake. The church was rebuilt by Isaac Comnenus, Alexius's third son. However, it was only after the third phase of building, two centuries after, that the church as it stands today was completed.

The powerful Byzantine statesman Theodore Metochites endowed the church with much of its fine mosaics and frescos. Theodore's impressive decoration of the interior was carried out between 1315 and 1321. The mosaic-work is the finest example of the Palaeologian Renaissance. In 1328, Theodore was sent into exile by the usurper Andronicus III Palaeologus. However, he was allowed to return to the city two years later, and lived out the last two years of his life as a monk in his Chora Church.

During the last siege of Constantinople in 1453, the Icon of the Theotokos Hodegetria, considered the protector of the City, was brought to Chora in order to assist the defenders against the assault of the Ottomans.

Around fifty years after the fall of the city to the Ottomans, Atık Ali Paşa, the Grand Vizier of Sultan Bayezid II, ordered the Chora Church to be converted into a mosque. Due to the prohibition against iconic images in Islam, the mosaics and frescoes were covered behind a layer of plaster.

In 1958, it was opened to the public as a museum.

The Chora Church is not as large as some of the other Byzantine churches of Istanbul (it covers 742.5 m²), but what it lacks in size, it makes up for in the beauty of its interior.

Their first three full-length albums are examples of the death/doom style, although the latter two incorporated some melodic and gothic elements. However, with the release of the albums Icon (1993) and Draconian Times (1995), Paradise Lost also became known as pioneers of the gothic metal subgenre. In accordance with the change in musical approach, vocalist Nick Holmes changed his singing style. He used a death grunt on the band's first three albums, but on Icon refined his voice to have a cleaner tone. Later (circa 1997), the band began experimenting with electronic styles but after four albums reverted again to gothic metal.

Their line-up has remained stable for such a long-standing heavy metal band, consisting of singer Nick Holmes, guitarists Greg Mackintosh and Aaron Aedy, and bassist Steve Edmondson. Holmes and Mackintosh are the principal composers, with almost all of the band's songs credited to them. During the years, the band has only changed drummers, with original member Matthew Archer replaced in 1994 by ex-Marshall Law drummer Lee Morris In March 2004, Morris left the band. Jeff Singer took Morris' place and has played on all subsequent releases, though he was not listed as a permanent band member until the release of the single "The Enemy" in 2007. In a recent video interview, Mackintosh and Holmes revealed that Singer had already auditioned for the band when Archer left, but they chose Morris instead because "[Singer] had a pink drumkit"

June 2011 Market Update

U.S. housing market continues its gradual and uneven progress, despite the expiration of the home buyer tax credit. The remarkable rebound in housing activities from the initial drop following the end of the home buyer tax credit this past July adds to the belief that the risk of a double-dip downturn in housing may be disappearing.

As the housing market continues to work through the excess supply overhang, a result from the glut of foreclosed properties which is keeping home prices below their long-term trend growth, economists anticipate mortgage rates at or above 6% by the end of 2012 and expect buying activity to continue its upward momentum.

Supporting this view is the rising concern about inflationary pressures sparked by political unrest in the Middle East. While surging gas and food prices could prove transitory and pose no major threats, these price increases may weigh down consumer spending, which accounts for two thirds of the economy. While, the Federal Reserve is committed to making necessary policy changes to address such risks. Meanwhile, core price gains, excluding food and fuel, were modest in April, offering some relief to consumers.

As the economy improves, stimulus efforts by the government and the Fed is expected to gradually wind down, which typically spurs rising interest rates to keep inflation in check. Meanwhile, buyers continue to benefit from historically favorable buying conditions and sellers are encouraged by increased market stability.

Home Sales

in millions

The number of homes home sales in April were down 12.9% compared to the same time last year when the impact of the tax credit was at its peak. Sales were relatively stable compared to the previous month: less than a 1% decline. NAR Chief Economist Lawrence Yun states that “given great affordability conditions and job creation, home sales should be stronger” and cites unnecessarily tight credit for limiting sales. Gradual but uneven improvement is expected to continue. In fact, home sales have increased six of the past nine months.

Home Price

in thousands

Home prices rebounded 2.4% in April with median home prices rising to $163,700. This is 5% below the year-ago level and continues to keep the median price close to 2002 levels. Three out of eight homes sold during April, or 37% of sales, were distressed properties, which typically sell at a 10%–20% discount. This is down 3% from March. Investors represented 20% of sales, and all-cash buyers were 31% of sales in April, down from a record high of 35% in March. Prices and mortgage rates remain favorable for buyers for the spring selling season.

Inventory- Month's Supply

in months

The supply of homes measured in months on the market, if sales continue at their current pace, inched up during April compared to March. Inventory levels remained 26% below the peak of 12.5 months in July and only 11% above April of 2010 when the tax credit was in full swing.

Interest Rates

Rates have reached a new record low after steadily declining throughout May, primarily due to uncertainty in the global and domestic economies. Rates are still expected to follow an upward trend as the year progresses. As overall economic activity gets back on track, rates will likely rise to keep inflation in check. This window of opportunity for buyers to lock in these historically low interest rates may not remain open much longer.

Topics For Home Owners, Buyers & Sellers

Following in the footsteps of its counterpart Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac is offering a summer sales promotion for buyers who purchase a home from its inventory of foreclosures or HomeSteps properties. Since banks typically sell foreclosures “as-is” without incentives, warranties, or repairs, this incentive could help buyers view a HomePath property more like a traditional sale, and less like a distressed property, during their search process.

For offers received by July 31 that close by September 30, Freddie Mac is offering:

3.5% in closing costs to buyers

$1,200 bonus to buyer agents

This is on top of the incentives already being offered:

A two year HomeProtect Home Warranty

Up to 30% savings on new appliances

Note that this program comes with a few eligibility requirements, which includes the home must be a single-family, owner-occupied, financed dwelling used solely for residential purposes.
