Plot of individuals known from fossils or live specimens. Each dot represents one individual. Horizontal position roughly indicates physical similarity. Vertical position corresponds to the geological layers that the fossils are found in. The strangely high number of Paranthropus from the Upper Pliocene is due to the dozens of P. robustus specimens at Swartkrans, South Africa, and the high number of Ardipithecus from the Lower Pliocene is due to recently published discoveries of A. ramidus. Some populations appear to have dead ends (e.g., Neandertals, Homo erectus, Paranthropus), while others (e.g., Ardipithecus, Praeanthropus) may have living successors.
