Hindu demons, the Rakshasa are shapeshifting terrors who live to destroy, desecrate, and burn. Subtle, they are not.

In D&D, a Rakshasa is a terribly evil spirit that takes the form of a tiger-man with backwards hands. That's actually close enough.

I love all the colors in this one. I was told the dark eyeliner is called "kohl", to fend off the evil spirits.

Have you noticed that some riders have a small bell hanging off their motorcycle frame or handlebars? Have you wondered what the purpose is? Well, you have come to the right place. That little bell is more than decoration, it serves a very important purpose – it wards off gremlins, also known as evil road spirits.

You see, there are motorcycle gremlins that LOVE to ride, but they are also mischievous little devils and they cause all sorts of problems for you while you are riding. Some say they are responsible for that old lady in the minivan not seeing you and cutting you off in traffic. Or, you may be having trouble shifting smoothly, your battery goes dead, your turn signal suddenly refuses to work, an oil spill appears out of nowhere, you hit a patch of black ice, etc – you get the idea. Those little gremlins look for trouble and try to steer your bike towards it.

Now, once you get a bell on your scoot – it wards off these attacks from the little gremlins, not allowing any more to get onto your bike. If you already have some gremlins riding with you, they will get trapped in the hollow of the bell, and the constant ringing will drive them insane – causing them to lose their grip and fall to the roadway.

Do you have the protection of a gremlin bell? If you buy a gremlin bell of your own, the power works. If you receive the gremlin bell as a gift – the powerful magic of the bell is doubled. Do you have a friend who does not have a gremlin bell yet? Why not be the person to give them one, they'll thank you! The bell, and a good preventive maintenance program by the bike's owner, will help eliminate the gremlins.

Yeah, ok.

...so Taoist Hell is ruled over by bureaucrats?

I think they might just be on to something here.

A 'gargoyle' that's not used as a waterspout is called a 'grotesque'. These grotesques, overlook passers-by at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk amusement park in Santa Cruz, California. Generally meant to scare off and protect people from any evil or harmful spirits, I suspect that those entering the "Fright Walk", just below, can feel a little more at ease.

This is part of a carved wooden door from a 19th century home in south India. I took this shot at the craft museum.

In south India guests were welcomed to the household, through intricately carved doors, with vivid colourful images of mythological scenes that also warded off the evil spirits.

Sometimes, when a particularly evil person died, his spirit is ensnared by elemental forces and encased in a body of evil ice. That is a Chraal, a mindless, violent monster, dedicated to freezing and clawing at anything within reach. If one of these eight-foot-tall terrors dies, it explodes, thus giving one last strike against its victims.

Bombay Beach, CA- March 24, 2012

Debris on the shoreline of Bombay Beach at the Salton Sea. The Salton Sea is much saltier than the ocean because it used to be part of the Gulf of California. As the land changed, an area in the south became revealed, separating the Salton Sea from the Gulf. Up to 6 feet of water evaporates each year, leaving extra salt in the water. The salt causes accelerated decay of the what is left of the docks that once covered the landscape, and the salt kills the fish. Once a resort town, Bombay Beach is now a run-down field of debris, though there are still residents of the city.

I went for a walk down by the Macquarie River in Dubbo NSW to find these contemporary and traditional Aboriginal murals on the bridge pylons of the LH Ford Bridge.

To the Australian Aborigine, the Kurdaitcha man, with his blackened skin and white feather markings, is a more dread figure than that of any evil spirit. The Kurdaitcha is no 'legendary' character and his practice still survives in remote parts. In Aboriginal belief when death strikes its cause is attributed not to some natural occurrence or actual deed but to the influence of enemy magic.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kurdaitcha

Kurdaitcha (or kurdaitcha man) is a ritual “executioner” in Australian Aboriginal culture. The word is from the Arrernte people and specifically refers to the shoes worn by the man, woven of feathers and human hair and treated with blood. Apparently if you get a bone pointed at you from him, you will die.

Of course, you can't expect Rakshasa to be without variants - EVERYTHING in D&D has a variant! So, you take a Rakshasa and give him a sword, and he's a new sub-species! The Zakya are martial and fairly less-magical than their regular brethren, serving as soldiers underneath more powerful Rakshasa barons.

This rather large piazza/ open square probably attempts to depict that for believers of Guanyin, the evil forces are kept at bay, a long distance away. I am beginning to realize I have a lot of "stuff"! AND I haven't even begun to look at what is put away.

This glass witch ball was another gift from my daughter-in-law. It hangs in my kitchen window. Here is an excerpt from Wikipedia about witch balls:

"A witch ball is a hollow sphere of plain or stained glass hung in cottage windows in 18th century England to ward off evil spirits, witch's spells or ill fortune, though the Witch's Ball actually originated among cultures where witches were considered a blessing and these witches would usually "enchant" the balls to enhance their potency against evils. Later, they were often posted on top of a vase or suspended by a cord (as from the mantelpiece or rafters) for a decorative effect. Witch balls appeared in America in the 19th century and are often found in gardens under the name "gazing ball". However, "gazing balls" contain no strands within their interior.

According to folk tales, witch balls would entice evil spirits with their bright colours; the strands inside the ball would then capture the spirit and prevent it from escaping." There's more if you want to visit: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Witch_ball

I don’t really have a message behind this writing; it is just a personal experience that someone might need to read.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2007 was an extremely stressful year for me because I lost the friendship of someone I dearly loved with all my heart. I found myself depressed for a long time, and my eyes teared for no reason, I cried almost daily, and wrestled with God daily. To make things worse I started university in September of that year and the stress level just shot up! So I became not only emotionally and spiritually tired but also physically and mentally tired and very sleep deprived. One day in early January of 2008 I went to sleep around 3:30 AM (because of school work I had to stay late), so I laid with my back flat on the bed looking at the ceiling and because I was so exhausted as soon as I put my head on the pillow I fell asleep.

Suddenly (what seemed like a second after I fell asleep) I had a nightmare, the scariest nightmare I’ve ever had:

In the nightmare I dreamt that I was laying on my bed with my eyes open—just like when I went to sleep. I could see everything clearly in the room and I wondered in the dream, “This can’t be a dream! There are so much details and everything looks so real!” You know how in dreams there are usually those blurry spots or vignette corners? Well, not in this dram: everything was crystal clear and in focus from corner to corner! I could move my eyes but I couldn’t move any other part of my body. I tried to move my hand and legs but it didn’t work, I tried to move my head and I couldn’t—it was like I was paralyzed below the neck! But the feeling of paralysis was so real! Then I saw this dark smoke rising from under my bed—the smoke didn’t have a smell and it was almost in the shape of flames. Those flame shapes had eyes and like little hands waving and they moving closer to me. That scared me a lot since those shapes looks like ghosts or some type of evil spirits. So I tried harder to move but I couldn’t, I tried to shake my head to wake up from the dream but I couldn’t move, and tried to scream to call for help but I couldn’t make a sound! That’s when I thought, “Holy Spirit help me! I don’t know what’s going on! I need your help!” And suddenly I woke up! My room looked exactly like it was in the nightmare—nothing changed. But now I could move normally and the evil spirit shapes had gone. I looked at the clock and it was merely 10 minutes after I had gone to sleep.

Next morning I felt uneasy because I knew I had a terrible nightmare but I couldn’t remember what it was! On my way to university I remembered my dream so I told a classmate, “Last night I had the worst nightmare ever!” Without me saying anymore he replied, “Do you have sleep paralysis?” I thought, “Sleep paralysis? What is that?” I had heard of the term ‘sleep paralysis’ but I wasn’t familiar with what it is, but the word ‘paralysis’ made me think, “I think I do have sleep paralysis!”

So when I went home I researched ‘sleep paralysis’ on the Internet and I found the following on Wikipedia:

Physiologically, sleep paralysis is closely related to REM atonia, the paralysis that occurs as a natural part of REM (rapid eye movement) sleep....When it occurs upon falling asleep, the person remains aware while the body shuts down for REM sleep, and it is called hypnagogic or predormital sleep paralysis....The paralysis can last from several seconds to several minutes "by which the individual may experience panic symptoms". (described below) As the correlation with REM sleep suggests, the paralysis is not entirely complete; use of EOG traces shows that eye movement is still possible during such episodes.

In addition, the paralysis may be accompanied by terrifying hallucinations (hypnopompic or hypnagogic) and an acute sense of danger. Sleep paralysis is particularly frightening to the individual because of the vividness of such hallucinations. The hallucinatory element to sleep paralysis makes it even more likely that someone will interpret the experience as a dream, since completely fanciful or dream-like objects may appear in the room alongside one's normal vision.

Some reports read that various factors increase the likelihood of both paralysis and hallucinations. These include:

* Sleeping in a face upwards or supine position

* Increased stress

* Sudden environmental/lifestyle changes

* A lucid dream that immediately precedes the episode.

* Excessive consumption of alcohol coupled with lack of adequate sleep.

Many perceptions associated with sleep paralysis (visceral buzzing, loud sounds, excited mental state, presences, and the paralysis itself) also constitute a common phase in the early progression of episodes referred to as out of body experiences. Mental focus varies between the two conditions; paralysis sufferers tend to fixate on reestablishing operation of the body, whereas subjects of out-of-body episodes are more occupied by perceived non-equivalence with the body.

(Source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleep_paralysis)

Those episodes of sleep paralysis happened about 4 more times in the next couple of years. I think the last one was in 2009. In each episode the same thing would be repeated with the difference is that the smoke (shape of evil spirits) would be of different colour, such as dark and light gray. Each time the paralysis ended with my crying to the Holy Spirit for help. Sometimes I woke up, and other times I just continued my sleep afterward. However, only the first time was scary...for some reason the subsequent times weren’t scary.

I also wondered why only crying to the Holy Spirit for help seemed to work in ending the paralysis and the “terrifying hallucinations”.

In the Buddhist religion, and in Chinese art, these sacred objects are known as "Foo Dogs". Its not uncommon to see them guarding tombs or placed in front of buildings to scare the evil spirits away and thus discourage any wrong doers and demons from entering the place of tranquility. The Foo Dog is embodied in rich Chinese history and tradition and are very popular today in all parts of the world.

Every Thai place be it a park, condo, shopping centre, temple, school has a "Spirit House" outside. It is believed that these protect places from evil spirits and offerings are left each day to keep them happy.
