Note: "During the period of June 10 to July 1 , 1965, a total of 65,945 acres were sprayed with DDT for control of early-instar larvae (Perkins and Dolph 1967). Application was by helicopter and at the rate of 0. 75 pound DDT in 1 gallon of fuel oil formulation per acre. Because of public concern at this time about side effects of DDT in the environment, impact of the spray on other resources, including fish, water, soil, forage, and cattle, was evaluated by scientists working independently of the project (Crouch and Perkins 1968, Tarrant et al. 1972). In addition, a small test was made of two other candidate insecticides, Dursban, an organic phosphate, and Zectran, a carbamate."

A Macedonian and an U.S. Army Soldier practice the evacuation of simulated casualties during the standardization part of this year's U.S. Army Europe Expert Field Medical Badge (EFMB) competition, at the Joint Multinational Training Command's Grafenwoehr Training Area, Germany, Aug. 25, 2014. 300 candidates from U.S. forces in Europe including 40 multinational participants are competing in the five-day challenge. The test is a rigorous evaluation of mental and physical skills and earning the badge requires a high degree of ability and focus. Passing rates range from 5-25 percent, making the EFMB a distinctive mark in a Soldier's records. The EFMB also provides multinational and U.S. service members the opportunity to train together and to gain a greater understanding of their abilities while building more competent and confident Soldiers. SHARE medical staff and volunteers evaluate the nutritional statuses and overall physical health of disaster victims. Based on their evaluations, the volunteers refer to the recommended healthcare provider for chronic and non-chronic medical conditions. SHARE provides services via mobile clinics, which make primary healthcare accessible to all residents. Over 450 doctors, nurses, and other volunteers have participated in home visits. Common health problems observed are gastrointestinal issues, cold, diabetes, high blood pressure, and mental illnesses.
The emergency medical services provided by the NGO Service for the Health in Asian & African Regions (SHARE) have addressed the short- and long-term needs of disaster victims. Services have included the provision of medical staff, supplies, and other healthcare services to victims in Natori and Kesennuma in Miyagi Prefecture. Based on ongoing evaluation, these services will continue through the end of the year or until the local medical care system is again able to address the medical needs of the city’s residents.

Cost-effective pasture management practices in Kyrgyzstan are helping to reduce negative impacts of livestock grazing on land and improve rural livelihoods.
The project is also working on attracting farmers to distant pastures by installing green technologies, including six mini hydropower stations and 18 solar energy stations. This equipment helps to improve the livelihoods of families and shepherds working in distant pastures.

Hunter F.1 WT680 at Fleet Hargate, 5th June 2014; Damien Burke
First flown on 6th October 1954, like many F.1s WT680 didn't have a long career and was retired to ground instructional duties by November 1957. She ended up at Aberporth and was looked after by 1429 Squadron ATC at the Defence Test & Evaluation Organisation's facility there. In 2005 she moved, and was refurbished and put on display in the car park of the Anglia Motel by the side of the A17 road. Unfortunately her repaint was carried out by simply re-doing the previous inaccurate paint scheme - as a Mk.1 she never wore these colours in service. If you do go along to take your own pictures, there's a bucket next to it for donations - which usually go to charities (the BBMF on my last visit). While she spent a little time resting on her bottom with nosewheel in the air, she's now returned to a normal stance. Unusually for preserved Hunter she is complete with engine and her cockpit is also remarkably complete. It's a shame the paint job is now faded and there is some corrosion appearing on the undercarriage legs and bays. A little loving attention right now and an authentic repaint would go a long way to keeping her around for years to come!
