This little gem accepts TCP/IP and converts the output to serial for a microcontroller. It's tiny! One could imagine crafting a tiny webserver in a 1" cube, or perhaps one day a light OpenSIM server. That would be rather interesting.

I finally am building a proper RAID array, complete with hotswap drive cages. It's just Linux software RAID-5, because I really don't care especially much about performance, just about resiliency (I don't actually trust RAID too much these days either, but I figure that it's a nice extra layer of redundancy for backups)

I tried the 5-in-3 (5 1" tall 3.5" drives in 3 5.25" drive bays) version of the AMS SATA backplane, but it wouldn't fit the case without taking a dremel to the case. I decided that it wasn't worth the effort. So I got the 3-in-2 (3 1" tall 3.5" drives in 2 5.25" drive bays) version instead, figuring that whenever I need more drives, I'll just get another 3-in-2 cage.

The added blinkenlichten are great.

The internet connection is provided by a Huawei 3G modem router. Since we have five like box units and the 3G modem router only provides four ethernet, an extra router was needed.

I got an emergency computer call to Cat's place this morning.

Apparently Windows had lost any knowlege of her ethernet port - which somewhat limited her internet access *gasp*.

Clicking "enable" on the adapter in device manager fixed the problem.....*sigh*
