This was the location of the old office file server. Wires run from here throughout the office space. I'm not sure how we will tidy this up - or if we will simply wad the cables up and stuff them into the wall. Perhaps an Industrial Archeologist will find them in a hundred years and say "someone had an over-active ether-gnome here in the early 2000s".

The NetFPGA platform enables researchers and instructors to build working prototypes of high-speed, hardware-accelerated networking systems. The platform can be used in the classroom to teach students how to build Ethernet switches and Internet Prototcol (IP) routers using hardware rather than software. The system consists of a reprogrammable development board, reference implementations, and sample courseware. The development board itself is a PCI card that can be installed in any PC with an available full-length slot. Hosted on the board are a user-programmable FPGA (with two PowerPC processors), SRAM, DRAM, and four 1Gbps Ethernet ports.

This bracelet is made of copper wire that was salvaged from some old electrical wiring along with some thinner red wire from an ethernet cable.The copper is bendable, so the shape of the bracelet can be changed according to your preference.

 

The bracelet is 8-1/2” in length when stretched out.

The black boxes with all of the cords coming out of it are Ruggedcom Ethernet switches. There is an RS900 fiber modem switch, and a RS910 Serial to Ethernet switch.

 

The serial to Ethernet switch will allow the Ethernet communications to connect to the serial port on the Opticom phase selector. It also provides a second backup serial port, in case we need to route around an Ethernet port on any of the other equipment.

 

The white boxes to the right of the switches on the DIN rail are part of the Wavetronix radar detection equipment. This particular seup is for wireless radio communications between the field units, and the cabinet. This will likely be modified, and hardwire comm will be established from the field radar units back to the cabinet.

PoE magnetometer based on my Calunium microcontroller board (an Arduino clone using the ATmega1284P microcontroller). Included is a GNSS module for time synchronization from GPS/GLONASS/Galileo satellites, USB debugging interface and logic level shifting for interfacing to the remote sensor PCB (see www.flickr.com/photos/stevemarple/8521787269/in/album-721...). The Ethernet interface is provided by an Arduino Ethernet shield (or the later Ethernet2 shield).

I thought I was doing macro with chicklets and then I read about John Dohrn. No way, things could get way more macro. Ok, so I rummaged under my desk and found a 30 year old Pentax Asahi 1.8/55. Flipped it around and used electrical tape to hold it on the front of my super zoom (2.8-3.7/35-420mm). Ok, now I needed a subject. Scouring the house I found a dead fly but it didn't look so photogenic. I found a couple things with detail including this very old ethernet card.

 

It was lit with flash left and above on 1/4 power through several layers of white fabric and and desklamp with daylight bulb overhead. Main lens stopped to f11 and zoomed to 420mm, the adjunct lens wide open and focused short. Focused manually with the main lens. It is amazing trying focus and work with a sub-millimeter depth of field.

Last year while remodeling our house, I took the opportunity to wire up the whole house with cat5e Ethernet wire, as well as coaxial cable to every room, and some lower quality wire for security to each door and window.

 

Commercial enclosures are big and expensive, this Ikea cabinet is easy and cheep.
