This collection of etchings, produced from a photograph I took of a local derelict building, explores the desolate beauty of industrial decline and the recapturing of nature. Influenced by the mark making and critical focus on light and dark in Giorgio Morandi’s etchings, I varied the weight and density of line to create a graduation in tone. This ranged from delicate impressions of leaves on the window pane to deep writhing thorns consuming the frame. I employed a variety of inks, paper and fabric for my prints, experimenting with different amounts of ink on the plate to create shadow.

My contact, Nellie Vin, posted a beautiful mezzotint print of a windmill, and then graciously posted how she did it on a discussion thread in her group "Nellie Vin's Fine Arts Magazine". I followed the instuctions, and this is what I came up with.

Mezzotint is a printmaking process of the intaglio family, technically a dry point method.

It was the first tonal method to be used, enabling half-tones to be produced without using line or dot based techniques like hatching, cross-hatching or stipple. The result of this process is an image emerging from pitch black "nothingness" -- a true analogue to Creation. Outlines are simplified by absence of line, while substance is rendered with a virtually infinite range of tonal subtlety.

Etching was first used in the early 16th century. The back and edges of a metal plate are protected with a coat of varnish, and its surface covered with a 'ground'. The tracing of a drawing is placed on the plate and both are rolled through a press.

The lines of the drawing are gone over with a needle to expose the metal. The plate is then dipped in an acid bath to etch these lines to the right depth. The finest lines are etched first then protected with varnish before the immersion is repeated.

When the completed plate was inked and wiped, ink remained only in the engraved recesses. Variations in tone are achieved because the amount of ink transferred to the paper varies with depth of these recesses.
