Today we were treated to the opportunity of a lifetime (or at least in my estimation). We headed out to Shark Valley in Everglades NP for a morning shoot and witnessed this struggle between a gator and his intended turtle breakfast. I was firing off shots like bullets and got an entire series, but this one I wanted to put up first. The gator started in the water, grabbed the turtle by the leg, started death-rolling him, then dragged him to the bank where he continued his effort to obtain a meal. The rangers said the gators have just started feeding again after a winter rest. We were just very happy he didn't want one of us for breakfast.

Since I don't want any of my Flickr friends to mourn the loss of the turtle, I'll end the suspense. Hard to believe if you saw all the frames of the struggle, but........turtle escaped with his life (minus one leg) and we all cheered

I regard courage as the supreme human virtue, and this lovely and remarkable young woman has it. This is Miss Angie, a dance instructor at the Fred Astaire studio in Chandler, Arizona, whom I met several weeks ago when I signed up for lessons, which at first were for me and later included my wife. Angie quickly earned both my affection and respect, and her stature, in my estimation, only continues to grow. I believe in angels, both the supernatural and mortal varieties, and she has become the latest one to bless and enrich my life.
Angie is only 26 years old, but has battled some major health problems during the course of her young life. She told me when I enrolled in the course that she had undergone a serious bout of clinical depression, during which she gained about 65 pounds and moved in with her father, where she intended to just sort of give up on life. Someone persuaded her to take up dancing once again, which she did, and she credits it with saving her life. Angie has also had two heart attacks, including a massive one which occurred during a public event and nearly gained the upper hand.
I'm sure Angie had moments when she indulged in self-pity, which most of us do at one time or another. (I certainly have.) But she never made that a permanent part of her life. She is blessed with a vibrant and outgoing personality, and talent galore, all of which she has used to enrich the lives of other people -- obviously including myself. She told me last weekend that she wants to have children someday, and does what she must to ensure that she will be around for them.
I hope this and the other two pictures of Angie that I am posting today will get a lot of views, less for whatever technical or artistic merit they might have than for the story which accompanies the images. I commend her example to one and all, as one who refused to be defeated by life, but instead picked herself up and embraced it. And my, how she did embrace it!
As a footnote, I took this series of pictures at the dance studio after Sheila and I had a lesson with Angie. I wanted something that would capture her personality and joie de vivre, and I believe I had some success with that. I'm sure Angie would pose for me, but she is so busy all the time that I have never had the opportunity to ask her to do so.

I visited this first Paris space invader in the year 2024 when it was fresher than fresh. My estimation is one day after invasion. I had to come back to this one during the day for this close-up.

My father was pretty good in estimating focus, especially as the camera he had modified didn't even have a focusing scale (focusing was by unscrewing the front component a certain number of half-turns, which of course he had determined ahead of time by placing a ground glass at the film plane).
And of course exposure was also by estimation, though here, in full sunlight, using the sunny-16 rule was fairly reliable (using a shutter speed equal to the film speed in number, when the aperture is f/16). The film used was 40 or 50 ASA (ISO) Agfa, Adox, or Perutz.
This sepia-toned 8x10 was made by me in 1999 (46 years after the photo was taken). At the time, in the early 50's, prints made by our local photo studio were contact-print size (6x4.5cm) or 7x11cm enlargements (about 3x4 inches).

There is no teeth in old, I'm sleeping all the time. In the Tomei Expressway near Yokohama Aoba Inter, two cats are living happily in the cabin of the field.

I don't think it's his real name but it would've fit well today. After the RTC broke the bad news to them, one of the crew from A416 removes the FRED and mounts the last car. He'll be protecting the point of the really long shove all the way to STROEBE. By my estimation that's around two miles.

Lahore, April 4, 2017 – The Embassy of the United States of America is showcasing its long-standing support for Pakistan’s agriculture sector with a pavilion at the Dawn Food and Agri Expo. The U.S. Pavilion highlights projects assisting Pakistani farmers to modernize the agriculture sector, strengthen value chains and improve market access while ensuring long term sustainability of agricultural production. The two-day exhibition in Lahore, inaugurated today at the Expo Center in Johar Town, is open to the public.
“The United States, in partnership with the Pakistan government and the private sector, has provided approximately $777 million since 2009 to fund projects that support economic growth and agriculture, including the Government of Pakistan’s efforts to reform and modernize the agricultural sector,” stated Mission Director John Groarke at the Agri Expo inaugural session. Also at the session, the Punjab Agriculture Minister, Muhammad Naeem Akhtar thanked the U.S. government for its continued support of Pakistan’s agriculture sector.
The Expo’s U.S. Pavilion features a number of agricultural assistance programs supported by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) that help build Pakistan’s export capacity, especially in the areas of small and medium sized agribusinesses and agricultural producers.
Supporting economic growth and agricultural development is a top U.S. priority in Pakistan. USAID agriculture projects help increase employment and incomes for producers, processors, and vendors of agricultural products. To boost Pakistan’s agricultural productivity, USAID has introduced advanced farming technologies, built additional irrigation infrastructure, and introduced improved water management practices. USAID also assists agribusinesses in Pakistan to increase their access to financing and more lucrative export markets. These programs focus on the private sector’s agriculture investments in Pakistan. Over the past six years, USAID projects have increased exports by $76 million, increased sales by $170 million, and leveraged over $72 million in private sector investments.
USDA has partnered with the Government of Pakistan, U.S. land grant universities, and international partners to increase agricultural productivity in Pakistan, build institutional capacity to regulate animal and plant health, and food safety issues more effectively, and strengthen institutional research capabilities and U.S.-Pakistani scientific collaboration.
USDA programs also promote the adoption of new agricultural practices and technologies, and foster collaboration in dairy production, animal disease control, aquaculture, cotton diseases, crop estimation forecasting, watershed management and high efficiency irrigation technologies, improvement of soil fertility, and wheat diseases.
Pakistan’s agriculture sector has enormous potential, and the Dawn Food and Agri Expo provides an opportunity for Expo visitors to see and hear about the United States Government’s support to Pakistan’s agriculture sector.

Lord Dunsany (1878-1957) was, among many other notable accomplishments, a highly regarded writer of fantasy fiction. "The Charwoman's Shadow" is the second book I have read by Dunsany, the other being the highly regarded "King of Elflands Daughter".
The "The Charwoman's Shadow" is a well-crafted story set in medieval Spain. Our hero Ramon Alonzo is apprenticed to a magician in order to learn how to turn stones into gold. You see the family estate has fallen on hard times and his sister's dowry chest is empty therefore Ramon is charged by his father to acquire skills in the black arts. Nothing good is ever gained from trafficking with sorcery and Ramon needs his wits, luck and some help from Father Joseph to outsmart the magician.
The story is interesting to a point, but it is the glorious use of language and pacing that makes this book a most rewarding reading experience.
I found the character of the magician very interesting and nuanced. When Ramon questions the loss of his soul the magician confidently tells him of the worthy reward he will receive if he fully developes his skills in the black arts: 'you will walk through Hell a flaming object of awe and reverence veneration while all abase themselves as you go by faces low in the cinders - an apparition of glory, and among the first of all the splendors of Hell." No wonder Ramon eludes the magician and returns to the land of light.
Books classified as "fantasy" have been a mainstay of my reading interest for many years. I will not attempt to define just what constitutes "fantasy" except to say if you read it you will know it and will never inquire again. I must admit that so far my readings do not venture into the modern authors whose works seem to be taking over increasing amounts of space on the retail bookshelves.
As anyone who develops an interest in a particular subject or themes will eventually read comments or opinions by other aficionados and authors. The one author that keeps being recommended is Lord Dunsany. During the period 1960-1975 the recommendations were usually followed by the disclaimed that, oh well, he's a great author, but none of his wonderful fiction has ever been published in the US. Fortunately this situation has changed but you still have to troll the Internet to find his books but thankfully they are available.
