ESTHER MAHLANGU (b. 1935, Mpumalanga, South Africa,
lives and works in Mpumalanga, South Africa). Esther Mahlangu is a distinguished painter known for her bold, large-scale contemporary paintings that are based on the traditional paintings of the Ndebele people. Mahlangu first gained international attention in 1989 when she exhibited at Magiciens de la terre at the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris. In 1991, she was the first woman and non-Western person to be commissioned by BMW to create an art car, joining artists such as Andy Warhol, David Hockney and Frank Stella.
