Ester Dean has released her new EP Miss Ester Dean, and it can be streamed on Soundcloud for free.
Dean dropped the new six-song clip while currently opening for Nicki Minaj on her Pinkprint tour through Europe. She can also be seen in the musical comedy Pitch Perfect 2, which hits theaters on May 15.
So the first track on Ester's EP, "Keeper", only took about a minute for me to get into. Moody and very much that radio-R&B sound, this track is about a good woman, and that dumb fool should've kept her. Production is nice, nothing too complex or layered, but it accomplishes what it sets out to do.
"Jealous", is the second track, and Ester comes in with her vocals on auto tune - or at least that's how it sounded to me. This production sounds like trap-R&B. And with her vocal pitch and energy, she almost inebriated. And just like the first song, it starts to become catchy during the middle section. The lyrics are pretty straightforward, but with her voice, it all becomes tolerable. In fact Ester has a pretty interesting vocal cadence. "Jealous than a muthafucka". Simple hooks on this EP so far, and it's not necessarily a bad thing.
The third track is "Any Other Way" - and the auto tune is unmistakable here. But so is that damn beat, which is pretty hypnotic. Reminds me a little bit of BANKS, in that it's very deep and atmospheric, almost giving the impression that she's under water. It's a bit seductive. However Ester's vocals weren't really working for me on this particular track. The hook and beat is enough to carry it, though. It's catchy shit, man.
This EP is totally trap + R&B. With some reverb.
"That Girl" has a soft introduction. And once the beat drops, it encompasses something resembling more conventional R&B. She brought it better on her vocals with this track. Catchy hook, catchy beat. She's pretty much perfected that so far on this EP. She's raw and honest with her lyrics, which feels like a nice change of pace. "I think you fucked that girl". She mad. Go 'head, girl.
"Fuck it". I knew I would love this joint just from the title. The production kicks in and it sounds different from any other song before it. It's upbeat.
"And I don't know what to tell you
As you said you made up your mind
And I don't know how to get on
We're walking on too many lies
And if we keep telling it less
Then pain would be harder to bare
We stand and pretend that we care,
That's just sad.
Fuck it, fuck it
You don't want peace, then fuck it
You don't want love, then fuck it
Fuck it all, fuck it fuck it
You don't wanna live right, fuck it
You don't wanna act right, fuck it
Beg you, fuck it all."
Song is simple and it gets to the point, and it just works. And with the final track "New Shit", beat by DJ Mustard, (have fun trying to tell it apart from all his others) - is a pretty tolerable track, with Ester bringing her braggadocios all over the song. Ester Dean offers a different voice for R&B.
Check it out for yourself.
