A baker, miller and magistrate in one, he was an important figure in the ancient city, combining his trade with that of the miller.
The baker poured the grain into the funnel at the top of the millstones. A slave or, in this case, a donkey would push a horizontal wooden shaft out of the millstones to make them turn and grind the grain. The flour then flowed onto the stone from the bottom of the rotating millstone.
In this bakery, the bread dough was made on site and the loaves baked in the oven. This bakery does not have a bakery counter; the bread was sold wholesale or by itinerant traders.
Porta Nigra means “Black Gate” in French.
This name suits it well because the stone that composes it is quite blackened.
But it was not until the 16th century that the gate took on this name. When it was built in the 2nd century AD, the sandstone blocks that make it up were light pink! But, over time the stone turned gray and blackened.
This gate was one of the four gates of the Roman city founded by Augustus and then named Augusta Treverorum. It was an integral part of the 6.4 km walls that surrounded the city!
When Gaius Julius Caesar conquered Gaul in the middle of the first century BC, he integrated the Moselle into the Roman Empire, but it was Augustus who created the city in 16 BC, which makes Trier the oldest city in Germany!
The Porta Nigra is made up of huge blocks of stone, weighing three to five tons each, which were transported to the site using a system of wheels… that the slaves operated.
The blocks were squared and tied together with iron clamps sealed in lead. But, when the lead rose in value, vandals stole it. It was not until the 19th century that the wall was patched up… under the leadership of Napoleon
The "Door of No Return"
means for thousands who have gone through this door to be torn from their homes, on a terrible journey across an ocean
in a terrible future.

The city of Ulcinj, an ancient buccaneer's lair, has a turbulent past, with stories of battles and slaves sold in the squares of the Old Town. Legend has it that the famous writer Miguel de Cervantes was among them.the city walls, if you understand them, tell their stories, how the ancient Greeks built them, and how over time, cultures and civilisations have succeeded one another and blended, mosques becoming churches..... and vice versa .....

The Palazzo della Pilotta is a complex of edifices in the historical centre of Parma, in northern Italy. Originally designed as an enclosure for the Farnese court services, to integrate the ducal residence system, the monumental Palazzo della Pilotta started to be built probably around 1583, during the final years of Ottavio Farnese’s dukedom (1547-1586). The palazzo was designed by architect Francesco Paciotto of Urbino. The long corridors, orthogonally arranged to mark out a true “citadel”, with its internal courtyards and rustic brick walls, were intended to house storerooms, stables and barracks, as well as an impressive armoury, later converted into the Court theatre.

Marble.

Carved 1513–15 for the tomb of Pope Julius II.
The museum has two Michelangelo slave sculptures.
The slave Mourant has been the subject of several debates. Was he dying slowly, abandoning himself to eternal sleep, or, on the contrary, was this young imbibe in deep sensual ecstasy? Does the left arm support the slightly bent head, the right hand caress the naked body and the face express intense pleasure?
In the face of this work by one of the greatest artists of all time, we were questioned and immersed in intense aesthetic pleasure.

During this very early morning hike on the Kawah Ijen, we met some sulfur carriers, whose courage I admire. They carry out this task because this work allows them to provide a decent living for their families, but unfortunately, to the detriment of their health.
The sulfur ore from the Kawah Ijen solfatara has been exploited for several decades by villagers from the Ijen caldera. The latter extract the ore with crowbars in the form of blocks of several dozen kilograms each that they install in baskets (between 60 and 100kg depending on the carriers). They then go up the steep slope of the crater with these heavy baskets, then go back down the three kilometers of the side of the volcano into the valley, to a collection point, where the sulfur is taken by truck to a processing plant.

This peak overlooks the center of the natural cirque of Salazie where it would have slipped after breaking away from Gros Morne. It owes its name to the legendary Maroon slave called Anchaing, who is said to have chosen it for refuge during his flight.

"I looked at him, lost in astonishment. There he was before me, in motley, as though he had absconded from a troupe of mimes, enthusiastic, fabulous. His very existence was improbable, inexplicable, and altogether bewildering. He was an insoluble problem. It was inconceivable how he had existed, how he had succeeded in getting so far, how he had managed to remain-- why he did not instantly disappear. `I went a little farther,' he said, `then still a little farther--till I had gone so far that I don't know how I'll ever get back".

Dinkenech was always reserved. I never got to know her age and her background. But eventually after a few days she forgot about me and I managed to take her picture.
Dinkenech comes from Ethiopia. For several years a high number of Ethiopians have been leaving their country to escape poverty and overpopulation. They have only one dream : cross the read sea and reach Saudi Arabia or the Emirates. It is their dream which very often ends in a nightmare. Many of them drown crossing the Bab el Manded straits, the tears gate, as it is so well named. If by chance they manage to cross, they often end up being exploited and mistreated by unscrupulous employers.
Dinkenech, like many Ethiopian women, settled for some time in Djibouti. Working as a housemaid she tries to save enough money to reach Yemen. I tried to speak with her. She knows the risks involved, she knows she could be thrown out to sea by dishonest smugglers. Once in Saudi Arabia she could become the slave of a rich family, she might be beaten up, raped. She knows all of this but she won’t give up.
I managed to take her picture. Then one morning, she asked for her wages for her few days of work and then she disappeared without a trace.

A project by choreographer and dancer Jenny Mezile on the theme of the ‘Route d´Esclaves’ in Côte d'Ivoire, combining history with contemporary dance, theatre, Afrofuturism and social activism. The young dancers come from the poorer neighbourhoods of Abidjan and this project offers them the opportunity to train as professional dancers, thereby providing them with prospects for the future. The photos were taken off-stage, on the streets of the neighbourhoods where they live.

Tango, as a musical genre, was born at the end of the 19th century in a rapidly growing Buenos Aires, which welcomed boatloads of European immigrants. At that time, the habanera, which had evolved in Cuba from the European contradance, was played, along with the guajira, flamenco tango, and fandango. The descendants of African slaves retained their drum rhythms in the candombe. Their roots in this new country of Argentina led to a musical fusion that gave rise to the lively milonga, and later to the tango.
