Trapped indoors agian but I can still picture in my minds eye the sights and sounds of this image.

Surf and sun fun! Blue and gold macaw flyby over the beach. An unusual sight on Oahu, this bird was likely an escapee or a released captive bird rather than a migratory vagrant. I have seen it for several years, usually paired with a scarlet macaw. Seems like it should have a Jimmy Buffett accompaniment.

Photography as a hobby has come a long way. For some, it is an outlay for their creativity, for others it is a form of escapism from stressful jobs or challenging relationships, whilst for others there is simply the appreciation to capture a moment in time, or if one’s really good, a particular mood or atmosphere.

For me, one of the pleasures of photography is being outdoors, the camaraderie of sheltering from a pouring rain or gusty winds, learning from other togs' experience, absorbing new tips, and practicing new skills. Togs, as a whole, are a friendly fraternity, drawn together by the sheer devotion to their work. So, standing on top of a hill on a rather chilly evening after a shoot, chatting to fellow togs I am proud to call friends and sharing experiences, a line came to mind:

# continuing to delve into another discovered archive as promised ( these are more of my odd, multi-exposure Supersampler images)consisting of thousands of images that were essentially an aspect of self-prescribed grief (pseudo) therapy. I say pseudo because of it's longer term efficaciousness. I'd feel tremendous while shooting. In fact the year before last, I spent the entirety of Christmas Eve and Christmas Day on the roof, armed with multiple cams and plenty of Big Red (Christmas cheer in Texas). So at times, it seemed a bit more like escapism, because after a marathon photo session, I'd often feel, well, the same as I had previously. Allow me to state that these are purely subjective observations, and faint sketches at best. To be fair to my own version/adaptation of the art as therapy notion, overall it did help me. I had been severely agoraphobic, and it gave me a fixation/obsession (these have always been requisite to my functionality/survival anyway -- I must be fun to hang out with! ;), a reason to open the door, habitually monitoring the moon's whereabouts, scheduling my times, and shooting all phases. That's how it started for me, deciding that my lunar imagery up until that point was mediocre and that I knew if I spent enough time, I could extract more craterous detail, for instance, and quite simply be more capable of rendering La Luna's peculiar, unique beauty. I accomplished those objectives, and kept giving myself new assignments, solar photography being a favorite, one overlapping hard with science, what has always captivated (when I was very young, it was archaeology, always something, once again -- I went out to a UT excavation site when I was 11, amazingly cool, enlightening experience)! But I kept expanding, and please forgive/forget what I previously said about escapism. Actually, I needed that, and issuing a statement explaining that it saved my life..... that wouldn't be exaggeration, and was and remains true. Apologies for verbosity, but if anyone feels that sort of grief that itself kills, please find your thing and keep it with you. This is rather out of character for me, but finding this cache of images opened up something very dark again ,(spoken as a lover of Poe, that sort of dark, and worse) reminding me that grief is experienced differently by everyone, and mine s is still with me, it's seemingly intractable DNA mutations. People and the Pop culture are easily turned and likewise quite easily can become jaded. My example is the song "Everybody Hurts" that even some hardcore r.e.m. fans confided they were sick of hearing and everything to do with it. Sad. A simple, very beautiful part of the culture now, a piece of Michael Stipe and his kindness and essential decency, and a reason my Mom always wanted to write him a letter. She and her Mom were the most sincerely decent, good (I address this from a philosophy perspective, where her approach was religion) people I've ever known, and Mom saw something in Stipe, calling him "a very kind man." The lyric "don't throw your hand" really loomed large in meaning and significance each day before 0500, and still does. Thank you, Michael Stipe, and thank you, my Flickr community, especially if by some..... miracle you've read this far! Salud.

Escapism is mental diversion by means of entertainment or recreation, as an "escape" from the perceived unpleasant or banal aspects of daily life. It can also be used as a term to define the actions people take to help relieve persisting feelings of depression or general sadness.

Let’s heaten up these grey days of storm, hail and rain with some Italian warmth straight from Milan.

WATCH ARMARIUM

ARMARIUM is an experimental and symbolic film that explores the psyche and drama of one woman's inner escapism.

Made in Second Life

This shot is everything I love about light painting. The creative thought process before finding an idea and working out the intricacies of it. The realisation of something conjured up in your head and the escapism I find magical. Looking at the work of others who do the same and being taken inside their heads is something I love too. I know this is true with any form of artistic expression but something resonates with me when its light painting. The fact that you capture a scene which has never happened as a moment and is unveiled at the end causes me a feeling of excitement I don't feel with anything else.

🌲 I wish everyone a happy festive season 🌟 and a relaxing time between the years.

As 2022 wraps up … and it’s rainy and grey outside, I remember the many beautiful things that were happening this year. Apart from dreadful news and developments in the world, nature always provides a certain kind of escapism.

Thank you everyone that has been working with me this year, following, commenting and sharing my work and supporting me.

Mulberry Street, lower Manhattan

One of those days when you arrive at a location in the pouring rain, but on the horizon there's a little shaft of blue and a promise of better things.

I had the dogs in tow (in the car, not actually towing them )and they spent 10 minutes chomping at the bit and gnawing on each others paws, desperate to explore the dunes whilst the shower subsided.

We had a lovely couple of hours, with the beach pretty much to ourselves.......

Nice to get out last Sunday with a high tide coinciding with sunrise, even if the show of colour was only brief.

Thanks for viewing, take care and have a great weekend :-)

I really needed chest waders for this shot. It's amazing the force of the backwash as it withdraws. Luckily, no one there to view me hanging onto my tripod for dear life... probably the most fun I've had getting a shot...

Thanks for viewing and have a great week :-)

The irony is pungent….

I am currently working on a series of New York fire escapes, collected during my visit in November 2019. For me this also offers an upbeat escape from the news. I hope you will enjoy it!

Better run away from that avalanche of furniture.

In the series Fire Escapism I aim to elevate spirits by a creative play with rhythm and manipulation of the photographic reality. In this 6th exercise I am focussing on scale and virtual depth by making the divisions of the vertical space smaller and smaller.

My fifth exercise in playing with New York fire escapes is this colorful one. The series is meant as an uplifting collection to literally escape from the dreary (pandemic) reality into this imaginary world of rhythm, color and creative joy.

A Friday afternoon stroll after a hard week at work, looking for scenes to photograph, relax and take in. Photography offers me escapism and in many ways this image portrays that, dreamy, oh so British and just relaxing.

Europe, Netherlands, Noord Holland, Zaandam, Intel Hotel (Molenaar en van Winden) (slightly cut from B & T)

Whimsical, farcical, post-modern, ironic, escapist, a typical artifact of 'the society of the spectacle'…all of these things are probably applicable to the architecture of this hotel and its surroundings – the transformed city centre of Zaandam ( a result of the Inverdam urban plan: here)

Sjoerd Soeters, the architectural supervisor of the Inverdam plan and the one who enlisted the archictects (Molenaar en van Winden) blamed them for plageriasm: here. He charged them with using his image language without giving him proper due.

This was curious business…how can there be plagiarism in post-modern architecture, which is basically the reworking of architectural pre-modernist clichés? As if the Disney Corporation sues a photographer who captures a blond and slender in-bred dog with long legs, claiming that he infringes upon the copyright of one its characters (Pluto).

And do I like it ? In a certain way I do, I must admit - not because I like its aesthetics, but because it’s delightfully deconstructivist (definition: a building that looks like a mess) and this kinda short circuits the nostalgia, the clichés... The hotel is a contradiction of itself. It turns irony around …… and makes the viewer wonder who actually the joke is on ;-)

With the easing of lockdown restrictions here in the UK, I couldn't resist a trip to my local coast. Shoes and socks off and in for a paddle...although freezing cold, I did manage to get a little foreground interest with some withdrawing water. Feels great being back on the coast...😊

Thanks for viewing and Happy Monday All :-)

The original photo was a selfie wearing an imitation Venetian Carnival mask. Photofox Double Exposure component was used to create this image.

I have been reading a lot of science fantasy novels for escapism during these COVID-19 times, so this kind of theme is one of the side-effects. ;-)

“Steampunk is...a joyous fantasy of the past, allowing us to revel in a nostalgia for what never was. It is a literary playground for adventure, spectacle, drama, escapism and exploration. But most of all it is fun!”

― George Mann

George Mann (born December 22, 1978) is a British author and editor, primarily in genre fiction, and is best known for his alternate history detective novel series Newbury and Hobbes (2008-2013) and The Ghosts action science fiction noir novels (2010-2017), a book series set in the same universe

"Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,

And sorry I could not travel both

And be one traveller, long I stood

And looked down one as far as I could

To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,

And having perhaps the better claim,

Because it was grassy and wanted wear;

Though as for that the passing there

Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay

In leaves no step had trodden black.

Oh, I kept the first for another day!

Yet knowing how way leads on to way,

I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh

Somewhere ages and ages hence:

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—

I took the one less travelled by,

And that has made all the difference."
