BMW Art Car No. 5 - 1982 BMW 635 CSi by Ernst Fuchs

BMW Art Car von Ernst Fuchs, 1982.

In the year 2000 I took another round-the -world trip solo to see family and interview and spend time with artist friends.

On this day we went to the see master painter Professor Ernst Fuchs in his Vienna home, went out for lunch in the city and finally to a retrospective exhibition on the artist's work which he took me personally through. It was a fantastic day. This is one of the photos from that day.

This is photo is from my day with Vienna artist, Peter Gric, who took me around to the studio of artist Luigi Lasperanza. Both are great guys and some of Viennas best younger painters in the "Fantastic Art" genre.

This photo is of Peter and I in his home studio. You can see some of his work hanging on the back wall.

Jenny's Holzer specialises in text based art and here the BMW Le Mans Car gets transformed into Art by her words. This was the most immediate and apparent point where the car becomes not just a canvas for art, and the art not just a car being painted or just an advert for the artist, but something more: Here, the car becomes art. A difficult state to be in, as art normally has no "practical" purpose, just an aesthetic one but in this case the car is still functional and (for me) the art amplifies the car, the car ampilfies the art. It's a really special piece. The main graphic on the top of the car is "Protect me from what I want", an interesting statement on a racing car and the juxtaposition of these phrases in the context of being on a pratical racing car is really interesting.

The one that started it all - French Race car driver Hervé Poulain approached his friend the Artist Calder to paint his "car as a canvas"

You could argue Ingres' reclining female is replicating the line of the car seats, showing you a "sneak peak" of behind the door.

Possibly the reason why a lot of people will come to see this exhibition. Warhol chose to paint directly on to the car with brushes, but for me (and I consider myself a fan of Warhol) it doesn't really work - It reminds me too much of me painting airfix models and my guitar when I was a teenager to customise it - the results were always painfully reminding me I shouldv'e got someone who was actually good at painting to do what I wanted to do. The end result is, in my opinion, a mess (though it is fun closer up, and imagining Warhol sitting in a chair actually painting this car). It might have something to do with Warhol not really having any affinity with cars or motor sport so didn't factor that into his painting, he just wanted to paint a car.

This is a major work from this rough personal period. A kind of self portrait if you will.

This, like Michael Jagamara Nelson's M3 1989 features the colurs and designs of traditional art, this time mahlangu's native South African forms, bent and coerced around the BMWs body.

One of the highlights of our educational trip was a visit to the Derix Studio just outside Wiesbaden.

www.derix.com/en/

Here the highly skilled team of craftsmen translate the designs of numerous German and international artists into completed stained glass windows (unlike in the UK where most of us tend to translate our own designs into glass, in Germany the artist usually delegates to a highly professional team who works under their specifications, partly as a result of the much greater percentage of new commissions in glass, both ecclesiastical and increasingly in the secular market, an approach largely ignored in the UK).

Touring the studio enabled us to witness the team in action creating contemporary architectural artworks in various stages. It was also here we were able to meet the renowned artist Johannes Schreiter who gave a talk on his work.
