Notes: Edwards began as a portrait photographer in London, 1860's. He was also the inventor of the heliograph process, a seminal printing method for the reproduction of photographs. Edwards was brought to Boston in 1872 as manager of the Heliotype Corp. of Mass.(part of James R. Osgood Co.) who had bought the rights to his invention. Edwards left Heliotype Co. in 1885 and set up shop in New York City as the Photo-Gravure Co. Its primary work was high class printing, plate making and lithography. Two years later Edwards introduced a monthly subscription series titled "Sun & Shade" a large (11x14") publication of fine art and photography in the form of very high quality gelatin and gravure plates. Edwards located his company in the same office building (853 Broadway) as Edward L. Wilson, the publisher of the Philadelphia Photographer magazine (and later Wilson's Photographics). The two worked often in concert, Edwards making gravures of images to be included in Wilson's magazine, and Wilson editorializing about Edwards' work and company.

Ernest Victor Clarke served as fireman at this station from 24th April 1906 until 18th May 1909.
John Charles Clarke was born on 2nd December 1908 at the Home for Mothers in nearby Wood Street and spent his first five months living in the terraced accommodation next to the station.
Woolwich is London's second oldest Fire Station.
Thanks to the friendly fire man who invited us in to look round - sadly this station is to close later in 2013.

Fire services in London emerged principally from the need for insurance providers to limit their losses through damage to buildings and property in the period after the Great Fire of 1666. Initially each insurer maintained a separate brigade that only served subscribers until the foundation of an integrated service in 1833, funded by City businesses. In 1866, following an Act of Parliament of the previous year, the first publicly-funded authority charged with saving lives and protecting buildings from fire was founded, the Metropolitan Fire Brigade. Under its first Captain, Eyre Massey Shaw, the Brigade undertook an ambitious expansion programme of which a station at Woolwich, built near to the present station in 1868 but now demolished, was a part. By the 1870s, a distinctive fire station-type of identifiable, landmark building had emerged from the previous practice of adapting or emulating domestic buildings. The use of the Gothic style became more elaborate in the 1880s under the influence of MBW architect Robert Pearsall who, after 1889, headed the new Fire Brigade Section of the London County Council. Woolwich Fire Station of 1887, which replaced the earlier station, is a good example of Pearsall's work and now quite rare as only a small number of his stations survive. Derived from the influential plan of Southwark Station, Woolwich is romantic in its detailing (which includes pinnacles, buttresses and terracotta decoration) and has a striking watchtower. Of other Pearsall stations Holborn, West Norwood, Kentish Town, Shadwell, North Kensington and Camden Town have all been demolished; only Tooley Street, Bishopsgate and Stoke Newington survive and all but the last are listed Grade II.

A quite lavish brochure issued to commemorate the opening of the Hanchurch, Staffordshire, to Lymm, Cheshire, section of the M6 motorway that was formally opened by the Minister of Transport, Ernest Marples, on Friday 15 November 1963. Marples, whose tenure as Minister in the Conservative Government, was controversal given his links to the building company Marples Ridgway, was busy at the time as various sections of motorways opened at which he presided.
This thirty three mile section of motorway, for which Staffordshire County Council and Cheshire County Council had acted as agents for on behalf of the Ministry of Transport, linked the recently opened Stafford - Hanchurch sections of 1962 in the south and the Lymm to Bamber Bridge section to the north that had opened on 29 July 1963. The main contractors were Scott & Wilson, Kirkpatrick & Partners as consulting civil and structural engineers along with main contractors Tarmac Ltd., on the North Cheshire section, Sir Lindsay Parkinson & Co. Ltd., for the South Cheshire section and John Laing Construction Ltd. for the Staffordshire section. As well as the motorway segregated junctions were constructed with the A556, A54 for Holmes Chapel, A534 for Sandbach and the junction at Barthomley for the eventaul A500 North Potteries link road. Two service stations at Keele and Knutsford were also constructed.
The brochure contains facts and figures as well as numerous photographs of construction and completed features. Itw as printed in Stafford by R. W. Hourd & Son Ltd.
This image is of a virtually deserted road and is looking north from Howshoots Bridge, at the Lymm interchange, of the section that actually opened in July 1963. You can see the Thelwall Viaduct in the distance and a partially 'scrubbed' line of cones on the southbound carriageway that may have been to funnel traffic off on to the A50 before the section south opened.

Beautiful Ingrid Ernest (1933 - 1975) was a German stage actress who appeared incidentally in films and on TV. She was married to Arno Hanke, the managing director of the Ufa.

1952. Once one of the largest unions in the CIO, the United Electrical Workers (UE) was by 1960 reduced to a fraction of its original size, in no small part due to government intervention on the side of the raiding unions. Workers in the electrical industry, once represented by a single union, were splintered into eighty different jurisdictions. One historian observed that the wonder wasn't that UE "lost heavily, but that it survived at all." Ernie DeMaio, president of the mid-Western district of the union demonstrated the grit and determination that took. The same day UE struck the International Harvester chain, Ernie DeMaio was called before the House Committee on Un-American Activities. "Why would they demonstrate for me when I was under attack? Because they saw it as an attack against themselves. The workers fought for me and I fought for them. We had that kind of relationship."

ce qui frappe chez Ernest Pignon E., c'est une fastueuse maîtrise technique mise au service d'un projet à la fois artistique et politique. Mais l'exposer, n'est-ce pas le trahir car justement son oeuvre n'était pas fait pour être accroché mais collé aux murs des rues, des usines, des ports et des ruines. Non point fait pour être conservé mais fouetté par la pluie et déchiré par les vent. Pourtant désormais ses oeuvres sont hors des rues, mises en scène pour d'autres regards, encadrées, protégées parfois par des vitres, cataloguées, comptabilisées. D'éphémères elles sont devenues intemporelles. Et, si l'artiste n'avait pas souhaité les exposer ici, on serait tenté de les taguer, de les déchirer pour les ramener à leur sort premier.
