A trail pass through the Piney Branch-Ingleside Mini-Oasis in the Mt. Pleasant neighborhood of Northwest Washington, D.C., on July 17, 2024. Established by Rock Creek Conservancy, the site has a series of official and unofficial trails that make it a popular location for local Rock Creek hikers and walkers. Notably, the forest floor here is almost completely covered in invasive plants like English ivy. The Piney Branch-Ingleside Mini-Oasis falls in a southern section of Piney Branch Park, and is bordered on the south by an alley just off of Ingleside Terrace NW and Bancroft Elementary School, Piney Branch Parkway to the North, Mt. Pleasant St NW to the East, and a staircase entering Rock Creek Park off of the Ingleside Alley to the West. (Photo by Rhiannon Johnston/Chesapeake Bay Program)

This is a picture taken of a beautiful spacious but empty swimming pool which is ideally located on the compound of the Wellesley High Rise Apartments.
It is a crying shame that unfortunately the residents are not allowed to make effective use of this facility. Since residents live in such crowded apartments they should have easy access to outdoor facility which will serve to promote motor skills and encourage them to socialize in the outdoor location.
The pool is almost always deserted and the authorities should provide a resident life guard on site to ensure residents could use the pool under guided supervision.
The residents will be more than willing to enrol their children in swimming classes and pay a fee for the upkeep and maintenance of the facility which unfortunately is left unattended most of the year. What is the benefit of a facility that is not in proper condition for the people to enjoy? If the authorities are unable to provide the proper maintenance it should seek outside help from the office of the mayor or other charitable organizations to assist in the upkeep and efficient running of the facility.

Cylindropuntia sp. - cholla in Texas, USA.
Plants are multicellular, photosynthesizing eucaryotes. Most species occupy terrestrial environments, but they also occur in freshwater and saltwater aquatic environments. The oldest known land plants in the fossil record are Ordovician to Silurian. Land plant body fossils are known in Silurian sedimentary rocks - they are small and simple plants (e.g., Cooksonia). Fossil root traces in paleosol horizons are known in the Ordovician. During the Devonian, the first trees and forests appeared. Earth's initial forestation event occurred during the Middle to Late Paleozoic. Earth's continents have been partly to mostly covered with forests ever since the Late Devonian. Occasional mass extinction events temporarily removed much of Earth's plant ecosystems - this occurred at the Permian-Triassic boundary (251 million years ago) and the Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary (65 million years ago).
The most conspicuous group of living plants is the angiosperms, the flowering plants. They first unambiguously appeared in the fossil record during the Cretaceous. They quickly dominated Earth's terrestrial ecosystems, and have dominated ever since. This domination was due to the evolutionary success of flowers, which are structures that greatly aid angiosperm reproduction.
Cactuses are an odd group of angiopsperms. Their leaves have been evolutionarily modified into spines, which are used for protection against herbivores. The green, succulent stems of cactuses are the only portions of the plant that engage in photosynthesis.
Classification: Plantae, Angiospermophyta, Caryophyllales, Cactaceae

To me the cover feels more like 1930s WPA art than a World War II era design.
