The ECO Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2013 (SS2013) or Season 5 (EFW05) line-up of sustainable, earth-loving and environmentally-friendly fashion designers includes Nicole Bridger, Standing Arm, Rise, Mala Imports, Voyou, Ressac, Respecterre, C5H8 and others. Value Village continues to support the event featuring designs by Nicolette Lang-Andersen, Mimi Lauzon and Tony Vu. Kim Cathers offers her unique brand of 68 Pound Challenge with Adhesif Clothing b y Melissa Ferreira closes the runway show on Thursday.

On Friday (Oct 19), the last day of the ECO Fashion Week SS2013 is a series of seminars covering a range of industry subjects such as labor, manufacturing, trends, upcycling, consumer awareness etc. with ECO Fashion Week CEO & Founder Myriam Laroche and other industry experts like Martin Hojsik (Greenpeace), Tara Sawatsky (Canopy) and others.

Eco fashion designers mostly use recycled, reclaimed and vintage fabrics for their clothing creation. As a result, a lot of the clothing designs are one-of-a-kind, or as designer Myco Anna describes hers, ‘every piece is unique in the way it combines new and recycled fabrics and fibers like a kaleidoscope.’ Some designers also give away scrap or surplus fabrics to other textile artists to utilize and work with, adhering to a totally no-waste and everything-recycled principle.

Vök Baths, a new development of geothermal baths in Iceland, opened 27 July 2019 on the shores of Lake Urriðavatn, near the city of Egilsstaðir in East Iceland. This region has no other geothermal baths so the creation of Vök Baths on the site of natural hot springs within the lake will be a new tourist attraction for the region. The pools and wooden walkways float in the lake and have water from 38 to 41 centigrade.

The building housing the changing rooms, showers and cafe has a traditional and environmentally friendly turf roof. The architecture is by Reykjavík-based Basalt Architects. The interiors are a collaboration between Basalt Architects and Design Group Italia.

Fur throws made from discarded vintage fur coats and jackets. The original coat linings are on the reverse sides.

A day in a Junkyard

Salahuddin Ahmad, Melbourne Polytechnic, Victoria, Australia.

Either it is an accident or beyond its age, our carefully handled favourite car gets old, damaged, rusty, abandoned or impounded and becomes unwanted. It then finds a temporary shelter in a junkyard. A junkyard is also known as a car wrecker, a place where damaged or old vehicles are broken up and recycled to obtain useable parts and scrap metal.

Junkyards make a significant contribution to the economy. It is estimated that the vehicle attrition rate in Australia is 4.1% which is approximately 700,000 vehicles a year and produces 980,000 tonnes of waste each year. Thus, it requires a significant amount of workforce involvement to safely dispose of these vehicles as well as sustain the growth of this industry.

Imlachs Self Serve Auto Parts, a junkyard in Springvale, Victoria is a busy place full of activity throughout the day. People come here to sell their unwanted cars as scrap metal or collect recyclable parts from the damaged vehicles. There are 3 multi-dismantling machines, 2 forklifts, 6 trucks and 4 automotive lifts in operation with 36 shift workers to operate and run the business.

The Junkyard offers an environmentally friendly place to dispose of unused and unwanted vehicles. These unwanted cars contain toxic battery acids, toxic chemicals, engine oils and other fluids which can cause long term damage to soils, water and air quality. To minimise the environmental impacts, the most environmentally friendly way is to dispose of them in a junkyard with authorized operators.

Yummy food that doesn't have to be paid for later! :)

Not the best of pictures being from an obsolete crappy camera phone but still I love that the buckwheat crust is heart-shaped on a plate circled with hearts with all the toppings being heart-healthy raw marinara tomato sauce with a marinated pineapple, bell pepper and onion mixture.

Despite the "health" factor these were not unfriendly or boring party foods but just one of many delicious indulgances that were actually loved by the rest of the body and not just the mouth and eyes. :D

Tasty, tasty, tasty!

With 1178 Sq Ft, the Advantage is a cozy little home offering three bedrooms and two baths. The kitchen has a nice sized island with built-in shelving as well as a walk-in pantry.

Diners will appreciate not only the chefs’ final results, but can observe the creative process through an open window that looks into the small kitchen. Herbs are hung to dry along the walls and ceilings and are added to dishes when ready.

A little blurry but the colors are better than the flashed.

To round out the Moroccan pizza here is a green salad of spinach and shaved fennel dressed in a North African spiced creamy sesame sauce with pomegranite seed garnish that made the flavors burst together.

Next to the salad is a cauliflower and turnip tagine flavored with tamarind based on a picture I found here on flickr by a very amazing vegan food maker who has made some of the most amazing raw (as well as cooked) dishes I've ever come across, blogging it all in a beautiful online journal lovingly and humorously called, "What the Hell Does a Vegan Eat?"

The oranges for dessert are enhanced with a Moroccan-spiced vegan "honey" sauce, mint, lemon zest, pomegranate seeds, and something else I can't remember at the moment... :D The dessert, along with the pizza and dressing for the salad were made up on the fly.
