The Environment Agency is a non-departmental public body of the UK government responsible for protecting and improving the natural environment including air water and land resources. It works to address environmental challenges such as climate change promoting sustainable development and delivering effective regulation and enforcement. The Environment Agency is also responsible for flood and coastal risk management. It works together with Natural England and local authorities to develop plans to protect local areas from flooding and coastal change as well as providing advice to farmers landowners and businesses. Additionally it uses remote sensing technology intelligent water systems and integrated catchment management techniques. The Environment Agency works to ensure that people businesses and the environment are protected by setting standards and taking action on issues such as pollution and illegal abstractions.
At the Day of Discovery program, school children are provided a real world hands-on environment for STEM activities (Science Technology Engineering and Math) , with a backdrop of history, maritime sciences, and international commerce. Through this program, participants are able to experience an emotional story of engineering ingenuity, human commitment, and world service 70 years in the making.
Program activities include simple machines, depth measurement, water displacement/ buoyancy, straw projectiles, and a tarp flip team builder. A take-home guide is provided to students with additional learning activities that include hydrodynamics, ventilation, navigation, distance calculation, and the parabolic path. Day of Discovery aims to engage students in STEM concepts, critical and creative thinking, communication skills, problem solving, team building, risk and reward, innovation – as well as to inspire them to be productive members of society.

On March 21, 2019, the City Bar’s Environmental Law Committee, the NYS Energy Research & Development Authority (NYSERDA), and the Law Firm Sustainability Network held a program on the exciting new developments in the world of law firm sustainability and energy efficiency, including incentives available through the New York State Energy Research & Development Authority’s Commercial Tenant Program and opportunities to participate in the Law Firm Sustainability Network’s American Legal Industry Sustainability Standard (ALISS) program. The program served as an opportunity to recognize firms that have shown themselves to be leaders in sustainability by participating in these programs. Law firms are well poised to be environmental leaders in New York City, and leading on sustainability can yield energy cost savings and other benefits in addition to benefiting our city and our planet.
