कन्यादान | Kanyādān
A Hindu wedding ritual where bride’s father presents his daughter to the groom, entrusting him with her future wellbeing.
The concept of the father offering his daughter to the groom was unheard of in Vedic times. After Hinduism shifted from Vedic traditions to accepting the treatise of Manu Smriti, as the basis, the position of women changed in the Hindu society. The status of equality that women enjoyed during Vedic times was vastly curtailed, and they were stripped of many independent lifestyles. They were placed under lifelong male guardianship – Father when unmarried, Husband when married and finally son when old and widowed. From here emerged the concept of Kanyadaan. Nevertheless the ritual is grandly celebrated in all marriage ceremonies across the society and in real context, the scenario is not as cut and dried as that. The ritual is enmeshed with a lot of emotions that undermine the religious side of the process. It exemplifies the bond between a father and a daughter and their eternal mutual love and compassion.

MESSIER 16, NGC 6611 - EAGLE NEBULA, STAR QUEEN NEBULA
Messier 16 is a conspicuous region of active star formation, appearing in the constellation Serpens Cauda. This giant cloud of interstellar gas and dust is commonly known as the Eagle Nebula, and has already created a cluster of young stars. The nebula is also referred to the Star Queen Nebula and as IC 4703; the cluster is NGC 6611.
The cluster was discovered by Philippe Loys de Cheseaux in 1745-1746, who made no mention of the nebula. Charles Messier independently rediscovered the cluster in 1764, and described its stars as "enmeshed in a faint glow", suggesting that he discovered the nebula as well.
The Eagle Nebula lies some 7,000 light years away in the Sagittarius-Carina spiral arm of our galaxy - the next arm inward from us. At this distance, the cluster's angular diameter corresponds to a linear size of about 15 light years. The nebula extends much farther out, to dimensions of about 70 x 55 light years. M 16 might form one giant complex with M 17, the Omega Nebula, to the south in Sagittarius.
M 16's stellar swarm is only about 5.5 million years old, with its hottest, youngest stars of spectral type O6. Excited by high-energy ultraviolet radiation from these massive stars, this great cloud of interstellar gas glows by fluorescence.

Another tale of ambivalence, dementia and serendipity:
In 1970 having just exited a two-year stint in the Peace Corps, I found myself employed in a strange land I knew nothing of. But that's another tale. Within months of starting my first job post Peace Corps, I met a woman who would become my wife. Being a child of the sixties, I was completely enmeshed in folk music. My wife would play this guitar and had a beautiful singing voice. So I was basically ensnared by her modest guitar playing and her beautiful voice.
We got married. Both worked and then came a kid, and at some point the guitar got put in the closet never to be enjoyed or exercised. Once or twice over the years I thought I would teach myself to play it. My wife tried to teach me some music, but I have a unique inability to understand music. So my love of music never got translated to an ability to make it.
So, about ten days ago, I pulled the guitar out and decided it deserved better. I did a little research to ascertain an approximate value, took some pics of it, and listed it on Craig's List.
Within hours a gentlemen contacted me requesting a bit more info, and then decided he would drive 4 and a half hours to see it and possibly purchase it. The next morning Lou arrived at my house at 8:30 A.M. having left his house in the wee hours. By his own admission he is not a great artist, and his playing has been exclusively electric guitars and heavy metal music.
It was great to watch him finger the guitar and play some chords. After about an hour of slowly growing more acquainted with the instrument, he said, "Deal." We did not haggle over price, and off he went with a piece of our lives. The wife and I felt rather sad that we had parted with it, but glad that Lou truly appreciated the history of both Martin guitars, and the Meyer family dynamic.
A day or so later Lou sent me a video of his good friend who had advised him on Martin guitars, playing the instrument.
Lou was excited to begin his transition to acoustic and non-rock music. It's kind of bittersweet for me. Transitions are always difficult.
Silhouetted
In stark beauty,
Stands the tree.
Unadorned,
In winter’s dress.
Life’s pattern,
Both concealed
And revealed.
Maze of roots
Beneath the earth,
Soaring upwards
As one trunk.
Casting a net
Across the sky,
Enmeshing the moonlight,
In filigreed branches.
~Poem by Margaret Miller
Drop your line of troubles to the bottom of the sea.
If it catches on a rock then it’s time to break it free
but if, your line, a fish does bite
perhaps your troubles are just right.
So keep it reel and eat it fresh
and this fish philosophy, in your life, enmesh.
Amtrak's westbound National Limited is about to halt for its station stop in Effingham, Illinois. The train from New York to Kansas City is running more than two hours late.
SDP40F locomotives with the Phase I livery are still among my favorite locomotives of all time. At the time I made this photo, though, they were enmeshed in controversy over the accusation made by some railroads that they were derailment prone. By the late 1970s, Amtrak had decided to replace them with F40PH locomotives. But on this day the SDP40F was still the motive power of choice being assigned to long-distance trains.
Within weeks, though, Nos. 30 and 31 would lose their SDP40Fs in favor of E units. (Scanned from a color negative)

Created for We're here visiting Literary Cats
"We are all mad here"
The Cheshire Cat is a fictional cat popularised by Lewis Carroll in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and known for its distinctive mischievous grin. While most often celebrated in "Alice"-related contexts, the Cheshire Cat predates the 1866 novel and has transcended the context of literature and become enmeshed in popular culture, appearing in various forms of media, from political cartoons to television, as well as cross-disciplinary studies, from business to science. One of its distinguishing features is that from time to time its body disappears, the last thing visible being its iconic grin.
There are Nine Nights of Worship of Female Power. Navratri it is called and is a very important period in the Hindu calendar of Gods and yes Goddesses now.
I was at a loss to figure out whether this lady enmeshed in decaying iron by a male Hindu priest in Bhoginandishwara temple near Bangalore was a symbol of fertility what with the two betel leaves lying on the plinth of the alcove where she balanced delicately atop the head of a big horned buffalo.
I thought of asking some friends, versed rather well in matters esoteric. Then I let that urge pass. I checked images of a Hindu deity who would be on the top of a buffalo and from there I could get the thread as to who this voluptuous lady was and what was her story in Hindusim, her physical form so near perfection.
Whether the wire mesh prevented theft or the greedy advances of the worshipers, I am in no position to tell. She stood smeared in yellow powder as is the custom in temples in South India.
Meet Durga as she is popularly known or Goddess Mahalakshmi, the ultimate embodiment of a female created by all the Hindu Gods many millennia ago who imbued her with their own qualities and their own choicest weapons with 18 arms to go along in fight mode. ( In popular iconography she is generally shown with 4 or 8 arms as 18 would be impossible to accommodate in an aesthetic sculpture)
All this to vanquish Mahishasur, a demon who had attained near immortality by seeking a boon which made him immune from being killed by any man or God. The demon laughed off the suggestion that a woman could ever defeat him and that they were mere chattels. After he got his boon of immortality from the Gods, Mahishasur went off on an all conquering spree till there was nothing left to conquer on Earth. He then marched to Heaven and conquered the very Gods themselves and ruled the Heavens. The vanquished Gods wandering in the wilderness of nothingness, plotted and schemed and got together in their intrigue to manufacture a female figure who would be able to fight and get rid of the demon so that they could get on with the job of ruling their very own Heaven and Universe.
They ( Shiva, Brahma, Indra, Vishnu and others ) all gathered for the unique process of creating an entity out of nothing. A physical and metaphysical impossibility. The laws of physics can however allow light energy to be condensed and create matter. This the Gods did and created Mahalakshmi or Durga who was the epitome of feminine form and figure but imbued with a fighting spirit and armed with 18 choicest weapons of war.
Now this is a great scientific breakthrough which I am sure my fundamentally strong right wing Hindu fanatics would call superior Vedic or Pre Vedic science that precedes anything that the current day particle physics can come up with. Mind you it is easy to create light and heat energy from fission or fusion of
matter but current day science is yet to master the principle of creating matter out of light energy. We in India or let us say Indian Gods did this more than 2000 years ago and shaped a female figure of exquisite and superlative celestial beauty.
I am waiting for a Hindu scientist to come up with such a thought process and present a paper in a scientific community to highlight the glories of the Hindu civilization. I will not be surprised to see that happen in this atmosphere of over zealous interpretation of Hinduism that is ruling the roost these days.

"A hard-hitting, fast-moving tale of ruthless men, free-wheeling women and the sordid lusts that enmesh them in a web of corruption and murder!"
It is my theory that all driftwood aspires to become fish-shaped. I have observed this phenomenon whilst paddling the shallow waters of Lake Leelanau on my SUP. There, in the shallows enmeshed in the ripples of the sand ... there are the fish- shaped pieces, and amongst them are also real fish. The rest of this still life comes from our garden, at a time of the season when everything was happening at once!

Love - a wildly misunderstood although highly desirable malfunction of the heart which weakens the brain, causes eyes to sparkle, cheeks to glow, blood pressure to rise and the lips to pucker.

________
I love your lips when they're wet with wine
And red with a wild desire;
I love your eyes when the lovelight lies
Lit with a passionate fire.
I love your arms when the warm white flesh
Touches mine in a fond embrace;
I love your hari when the strands enmesh
Your kisses against my face.
Ella Wheeler Wilcox

As an educator training people in peacebuilding, it was a privilege to work with people of many different cultures and from many different conflicts.
During the first decade of this century there was intense and widespread conflict across Indonesia. One of the most intensive conflicts occurred in central Sulawesi where massacres, assassinations, arson, terror bombings and displacement on a large scale occurred.
In order to train peacebuilders, it is necessary to be on the ground to understand the roots of the conflict, directions and positions of those involved and to know the communities who are enmeshed in the conflict.
This group was made up of Christian people who were displaced and who had fled to a majority Christian area during the intense Islam/Christian conflict in Poso City and surrounds.
To hear of their experiences, anguish and hopes was certainly motivational for those who were in a position to contribute to achieving a just and sustainable peace, or to ensuring communal healing from trauma could be facilitated.
Specially cropped for trouser interest is this snap taken at Marlborough Crescent Bus Station, Newcastle, on Wednesday 20th October 1976. It shows a 1964 United Autos Bristol RELL6G fitted with the rather unfortunate early style of ECW body for the RE bus chassis. The contemporary coach body was a handsome design ...one of the classics in fact. Back in my conducting years I had a professional interest in comparative pushchair design. The type featured here, with "umbrella" handles were of ingenious construction and very easy to assemble; you just sort of put your boot in at the back and straightened your leg, pressing down smartly on the "struts". They weren't as easy to fold up and the handles tended to become enmeshed with other pushchairs in the luggage space under the stairs. Looks like a bit of light leakage just right of the bus, so probably frame no. 0A. Ilford HP4 film.

BIOPIRACY - In the recent past, patents on our genes have been purchased. Are we still the sole proprietor of our bodies? From this question arises a sense of arrested freedom in one's most intimate, solitary state. TAGORE FOUNDATION INTERNATIONAL
Established by Sundaram Tagore in 2006, Tagore Foundation International is a New York City-based 501(c)(3) organization that is devoted to intercultural dialogue and encourages social, spiritual and aesthetic dialogues between Asia and other areas of the world. The Foundation promotes the preservation and conservation of indigenous artworks and architecture; draws attention to artistic expressions that are either ignored or under-represented in the larger cultural context; helps to develop intellectually rigorous international exhibitions by Asian and African artists; and provides a platform for dialogue about arts and culture around the world.
The Foundation’s mission is inspired by and deeply enmeshed with the ideals of Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941), Sundaram Tagore’s great-granduncle, whose poetry, fiction, music and art have touched people all over the world. Rabindranath Tagore worked tirelessly throughout his life encouraging people to break free from “narrow domestic walls” through social justice and a universalism that merged the best ideals of East and West. In 1913, he was first non-European to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.
The cover from a publicity brochure, dated 1935, and in French entitled "coup d œil d'ensemble sur l'entreprise" and that describes the massive, vertical integrated company of Fried.Krupp Aktiengesellschaft, Essen. Krupp's have a long history, dating back to 1811 in Essen where they were foremost in the industrial development of the Ruhr and indeed, now merged with Thyssen, their HQ is still in Essen, a city once regarded as a company town.
By 1935 this vast company, manufacturing iron and steel as well as armaments, machinery, locomotives, shipbuilding and vehicles, was already thoroughly enmeshed in the economy of the National Socialist state and they, along with the family members who ran the concern, would be active participants in Germany's rearmament and complicit the country's conduct of the Second World War.
The brochure was gifted to a visiting French businessman ; this plate shows the enormity of a series at the company's plant at Essen - Borbeck. This complex formed an important part of the production iron and steel for the company. After significant war damage the plant was dismantled in post-war years as part of the short lived de-industrialisation programme persued by the Allies.

Red Mangrove propagule
The sprout that hangs down comes from the Mangrove pod as it floats along the water's surface is literally what created Florida. The roots touch bottom and grow in all directions, catching sand and debris, and single-rootedly forming the very landmass we know of as Florida!
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arch_Creek
Without this seed, none of what we know as our coastline... and many other coastlines... would be there. Thank you, Mangrove Seed, for all your environmental work!
From "The Forgotten Pioneer", Arva Moore Parks
"Much of the coast was a "mangrove coast"; here a great mangrove tree marks the transiton from bay to land. It's curved and twisted prop roots enmeshed all sorts of natural rubbish-- its own leaves, sand, grasses, the gifts from the sea-- until slowly, slowly through the years the "squish" became the solid earth." p36
Mangroves are trees and shrubs that grow in saline coastal habitats in the tropics and subtropics – mainly between latitudes 25° N and 25° S. The saline conditions tolerated by various species range from brackish water, through pure seawater (30 to 40 ppt), to water of over twice the salinity of ocean seawater, where the salt becomes concentrated by evaporation (up to 90 ppt).
There are many species of trees and shrubs adapted to saline conditions. Not all are closely related, and the term "mangrove" may be used for all of them, or more narrowly only for the mangrove family of plants, the Rhizophoraceae, or even more specifically just for mangrove trees of the genus Rhizophora.
Mangroves form a characteristic saline woodland or shrubland habitat, called mangrove swamp, mangrove forest, mangrove or mangal. Mangals are found in depositional coastal environments where fine sediments (often with high organic content) collect in areas protected from high energy wave action. They occur both in estuaries and along open coastlines. Mangroves dominate three quarters of tropical coastlines.

Approaching Barcelona on LH 1812 from München - From high up in the sky Catalonya looks beautiful, peaceful and quiet… Wondering what Thursday’s elections will bring. The path to the election has been enmeshed in bitter recriminations, outbreaks of violence, the fleeing of the Catalan President to Belgium and the jailing of other separatist leaders. The result of tomorrow’s election is expected to be very close but the people I’m talking to are confident that Spain will remain united. Let’s hope that common sense will prevail!
