It's a summer Friday, and McCloud Railway is running its weekly train east to the BNSF interchange at Lookout, California. The train runs with just engineer Malen Johnson; a helper will drive to Lookout and assist him with the switching moves there. The last 34 miles into Lookout are over BNSF-owned track that is operated and maintained by MR.
When this image was exposed at Bartle siding in August 2001, the future was looking bleak. In a couple of years, BNSF would enter into a haulage agreement with Union Pacific that enabled abandonment of the old Great Northern from Lookout west to Hambone. Traffic off MR for BNSF would go to UP at Mount Shasta, and UP would then turn it over to BNSF at Klamath Falls, Oregon. The last McCloud Railway train to Lookout ran in December 2003.
Ultimately, MR stopped hauling freight entirely in mid-2006. All its trackage east of McCloud is now abandoned and dismantled. For now, BNSF has left a couple miles of the line west of Lookout in place. This spur to nowhere is used periodically for car storage.
A Saturday in the Warrington area. Red Bank for 66754 and 66760 on 1Z24. Got done by cloud. 66155 followed it and of course that was in full sun! Then a move to Winwick for the rest of the day. 66620 came on an engineers train, 56087 came light from Carnforth - Carnforth which terminated at Crewe. There was a 5Z07 Crewe Gresty Bridge - Kingmoor. Expected 68001. Came with 66429! Anyway, here is 66620 working the 11:42 Euxton Jn - Crewe Basford Hall past Winwick 30/7/16
I love how this one came out! It took a lot of hard work. It is loosely based off of the BF3 engineer class. But mainly this fig was built to show off my Ak-47 mod. Enoy!
On a day of fast moving clouds 70817 manages to pick up some brightness passing Potbridge with engineers train 6C03 1151 Eastleigh East Yard to Motspur Park, here running on the up fast after some of what I'd call poor regulating!

66501 heads east from Bedhampton, working 6Y84 10.09½ Eastleigh East Yard - Effingham Junction, formed mostly of Coalfish wagons loaded with sharp sand.
After visiting the footbridge in Fratton, I went for brunch at Morrisons in Portsmouth (while the sun was moving round), and then headed for Havant for a shot off the footbridge by the level crossing east of the station - a spot I'd visited three years ago, but as the sun was going off the front of trains and the near end of the disused signalbox. So I'd intended coming back, but decided I didn't like the shot: a tall lighting or CCTV post means you have to go very head-on. Instead, I went looking for this spot, which had been described to me the previous day. The footbridge, however, is not shown on 1:50,000 OS maps (1:25,000 maps show "FB"), but it was easily found.
I parked, and went up onto the bridge to have a look, but without my camera - only to find a local photographer waiting for this, which was due "in about two minutes". So I hastily grabbed the camera from the car and made it back in plenty of time. Sadly, I learned I'd missed a Colas 70 not long before... moral of the story: remember to check RTT for freight workings, even when you're after units!

John Grantham, Sheriff of Newcastle at a Christmas party for children of Amalgamated Engineers Union members, provided by the West End Benevolent Fund, 20 December 1924 (TWAM ref. DF.GRA/1/1).
These images belong to a series of albums documenting John Grantham’s service to the City of Newcastle upon Tyne as its Sheriff 1924-1925 and its Lord Mayor 1936-1937. John Grantham was born in Blyth in 1877 and became a cinema proprietor in Newcastle. He was elected to the City Council in 1912 and became an alderman in 1932. The albums give us an interesting insight into the duties of Lord Mayor and Sheriff as well as a fascinating picture of the times.
2016 is the 800th anniversary of the creation of Newcastle's Mayoralty and Burgesses.

May 23, 2015 was 'At the Throttle' day at the North Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer, NC.. I was lucky enough to get a stint operating this fascinating and historic locomotive. One of the 10 happy engineers waving at his friends while operating this wonderful piece of history.
