This is still in the first 8 miles of Engineer Pass on the Ouray side.
Many of my photos of Engineer don't look like it is very hard. My photos tend to flatten out the rough spots, and of those are on 90 degree turns which make it hard to detect the best line to drive on.
If you zoom on the road you can see it is rough.

This is one of my favourite traction engines. Whilst most are fabulously painted in 'show' condition this one is maintained in its worn and aged condition. This is the real workhorse. It is named "Supremacy"

A rather fine 5 inch gauge live steam version of Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway Fowler 2P 4-4-0 number 44 at the Nottingham Society of Model and Experimental Engineers Society extensive facilities at the Great Central Railway (North), Ruddington, 1st September 2018. The original 44 was built by the London Midland and Scottish Railway at Derby Works in 1928 and was immediately transferred to the Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway fleet. In 1930 the Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway separate identity was abolished and the locomotive fleet formally returned to the London Midland and Scottish Railway with 44 renumbered 40634 . It was withdrawn from traffic in May 1962.

ESA engineers need to be certain of the strength and tensile behaviour of candidate materials for coming space missions – so they pull them apart.
This tensile testing machine (otherwise known as a universal testing machine) does exactly that: a test sample is placed between its two sets of ‘jaws’ and subjected to a steadily increasing pull force, until the moment of fracture.
The applied force and resulting deformation can be tracked precisely using a photogrammetry system – note the camera to the left – while the final fracture pattern becomes the subject of detailed analysis.
“Being able to measure the fundamental properties of a wide variety of materials is essential to good design, modelling and testing of spacecraft components,” explains ESA Materials and Processes engineer Nathan Bamsley. “Testing in an accurate and repeatable manner using calibrated equipment that you trust is absolutely vital.”
This tensile testing machine is part of ESA’s Materials and Electrical Components Laboratory, one of 35 technical laboratories based at the European Space Technology and Research Centre, ESTEC, based at Noordwijk in the Netherlands.
Made up of dozens of dedicated experimental facilities and hundreds of instruments overall, the Materials and Electrical Components Lab is dedicated to guaranteeing an optimal choice of materials, processes and electrical components for ESA missions and projects, bearing in mind the unique environmental challenges involved around designing for space operations.
A designated certification authority for materials and processes, the Lab is open to customers from all backgrounds for testing work. To find out more about working with ESA facilities, check our new website on the duties and resources of ESA’s Directorate of Technology, Engineering and Quality.

Dean Forest Railway, Parkend Station, at Parkend, Gloucestershire, England, United Kingdom, on Wednesday 22nd September 2021.
About this photograph.
The train led by the engine called Swiftsure had arrived at Parkend Station, and the staff operating the train were making preparations for the return journey to Norchard.
Here, one of the engineers is seen refilling the loco’s tank with water. The photograph was converted in Adobe Lightroom into black and white for a classic feel to the engineer doing the work.
Swiftsure is a Hunslet Austerity 0-6-0ST class of steam locomotive designed by Hunslet Engine Company. This engine was built in 1943, and bears the number 75008 painted on the side.
It was a visiting steam loco, having visited before in 2017 and 2018, she was back at Dean Forest Railway from June 2021 onwards. At the current time of writing, she is reported to be still operational.
My best friend and I were at Dean Forest for a weekdays holiday, and she wanted to have more day outs rather than being stuck at the cabin, so I came up with two different day out ideas. The visit to the Dean Forest Railway was one of the ideas, and my best friend enjoyed the rides.
I took the opportunity to try to find some interesting shots, rather than taking memorable photos of the holiday.
About the overall subject.
The Dean Forest Railway is a 4 to 5 miles long heritage railway, still running vintage steam, and classic diesel trains, as a tourist attraction in the Forest of Dean.
It started in 1799 as an idea for a horse-drawn tramway, linking the Forest of Dean to the rivers Severn and Wye, for the transportation of coal and iron materials.
Between 1800 to around the 1870s, it went through so many processes. Like building lines and branching out, changing company names, financial problems, rival companies, converting from horse-drawn tramway into steam powered railway, merging companies, change of railway gauge sizes, and so many other factors.
It became known as the Severn and Wye Railway during those years.
From around the 1870s onwards, in order to cope with financial difficulties, and to help with funding, they started fee-paying passenger services in addition to the goods carrying services. But ongoing financial problems, lack of traffic, and many other factors, continued up until around the 1940s.
After the Second World War (1939-1945), the railways in this area started to go downhill, mainly due ot declining coal industry in the area, lack of passengers, improvements in transportation elsewhere, and the nationalised of British railways.
Many stations and lines started closing down, or completely shut down, during the 1950s and 1960s.
Starting from the early 1970s onwards, a railway preservation society was formed to try to buy and save as much of the old railway, and run it as a heritage railway for tourism, and was then named as Dean Forest Railway.
At the current moment, the Dean Forest Railway is approximately between 4 to 5 miles long between Lydney and Parkend, with Norchard station as its home base, but they are hoping to extend the line to 7 miles in near future.
They run a range of mostly steam trains to 1960s diesel trains, with various carriages, and at least 5 stations.

Vincent finally made his decision. He wasn't going to go home. Not tonight. Even feeling the effects of the herb couldn't squash the feeling of emptiness and taint he felt when he thought of going home tonight. Yet, as he stood on the curb of the main street that led downtown from the docks there seemed to be no carriages around. He knew all he had to do was wait a while and surely one would show up soon.
All of a sudden, Vincent's stomach made a loud gurgle and it caused him to actually grab his stomach in surprise. He smirked slightly to himself as he realized he was feeling hungry; likely induced by the herb. And as he thought about food, he began to feel like he wanted something savory. With the docks nearby, there would be food vendors still around. It was always a busy area, day or night. And he knew he'd be more likely able to find a carriage to take him downtown, too.
...
Vincent's mouth watered as he stood before the fried fish vendor and watched as his sandwich was being made. These street vendors always had the best food! And being right on the lake meant fresh fish was a popular menu option, which was a favorite of Vincent's. His fried fish was being smothered on top in a tangy, creamy sauce with a fresh tomato sandwiched between a perfect looking bun, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Once handed his food, Vincent gave a grateful "Thank you" to the vendor before turning and setting off to find a spot to devour his food.
Licking a little bit of dripping sauce off the edge of the bun, Vincent gave a soft moan of appreciation at the hint of spicy flavor. This was going to be delicious! He wandered off to the side out of the way. Finally, over by a bench under a tree, he stood there and gave his sandwich an eager glance over before bringing it to his mouth. But before he could take a bite, he saw the shadow of someone approaching to his left. Hell, they weren't even paying attention, he realized with annoyance as he stepped out of the way just in time! They were walking backwards and looking around everywhere but where they were going! Vincent looked up with a small glare at whoever it was.
"Hey, watch it!"
"I'm so sorry! My bad, I- Vincent?"
Vincent blinked and stared up at the person as it registered that it was...Aiden. Aiden was in fact the offending pedestrian and not just a figment of his imagination! Vincent was so amazed by his unexpected appearance that his sandwich remained forgotten in his hands at chest level. Suddenly he blurted out the first words that came to mind.
"Are you stalking me?!"
Aiden was startled by the outburst and found he couldn't help but laugh! Vincent sounded so serious and was still staring at him as if he couldn't believe his eyes! Aiden shook his head and put up his hands in playful defense with a grin and insisted, "I'm not, I swear! I didn't mean to almost run you over. I'm- I'm lost." Aiden's grin faded as he glanced around then finally back to Vincent with an embarrassed smile.
"Lost?"
"Yeah. I was trying to find the short-cut I found the other day but I must have missed it. No, I can't have. Bah, I must be on the wrong street! Everything looks different at night!"
As the seconds passed, Vincent found he was becoming amused at Aiden's predicament and felt a little bad for him, too. While the docks were nearby, they weren't exactly close to where Leon's Claw was docked. He could point out how to get there from here but there were no short-cuts. Aiden had to be on the wrong street just like he thought he was. Even while under the influence of the herb, Vincent could see how Aiden looked a little worn out and flushed. Likely, he'd been wandering a while on top of having such a busy day.
"Are you okay?" Aiden asked, his brow furrowing slightly as he studied Vincent. He even leaned in slightly more to squint at him in the dim lighting. Vincent...seemed alright but somehow off. It was...almost as if he were drunk but not quite. He seemed to be in total control of himself and was answering without slurring. What was going on?
Opposite him, Vincent stared back at Aiden for a long moment. Then, unexpectedly, Vincent grinned and replied in a slightly more chipper voice than Aiden had ever heard, "I am now!" And he brought his sandwich up to his mouth and took a big bite. He moaned softly and closed his eyes as he savored the favor.
"Mm! This is hitting the spot. Are YOU okay?" Vincent was suddenly asking him once he swallowed his first bite. He tilted his head slightly as he stared up at Aiden. Then without another word he took another bite of his sandwich while still staring up at his friend.
Aiden laughed softly as he tried to wrap his head around Vincent's behavior! He'd never seen Vincent act like THIS! Even to Aiden, he wasn't sure if it made sense. It was as if the captain had let go of his inhibitions more than usual. It wasn't to say he hadn't opened up more as of late but there was just something different about tonight.
"I'm fine," Aiden explained. "Really! Don't look at me like that! I've just been walking for a couple of hours now. That's all. How far away is the ship anyway?"
"I'd say about thirty minutes?"
"Well, shit. At least it's not too far. I can't wait to get something to drink."
"You look it. Why don't you get one on the way?"
"I forgot my money on the ship."
"Aiden!"
"What?!"
"What the Hell am I gonna do with you?"
Vincent chuckled softly and shook his head at Aiden's sheepish little smile. Vincent licked his lips and looked around. He could see a few of the public carriages coming in this direction. With any luck, he could snag one and head downtown! But what was he going to do with Aiden? Logically, he knew he could just send him off with directions. That's what he should do. Maybe he'd give him the money to get a cool drink, too. Yes, that sounded good. And when he looked back at Aiden to do just that, he was caught off guard as Aiden seemed to be leaning in and peering at him a little closer.
"Are you 'sure' you're okay?" the younger man asked as he tilted his head. "You never really answered me before and...I just realized your eyes are really red." Aiden's concern shifted into confusion as Vincent suddenly laughed softly and gave a small, dramatic sigh before replying, "I'm fine! Though, I'm fairly certain you've seen my eyes like this many times. You're only just noticing! It comes with smoking the herb and it's perfectly normal."
"Smoking the herb?" Aiden responded uncertainly. And then it clicked! "Isn't that what your bhang is made from? Wait....are you sure you should be smoking with your ribs like that?" At this, Vincent gave him a look as he responded firmly and with authority, "I know the risks and right now I could care less. It's been a Hell of a night, but at least I'm not fucking drunk. And...to answer your question: yes, it is what my bhang is made from." And with that, Vincent lowered his gaze with a small sigh. Aiden could see how his shoulders sank just a touch as well. He looked exhausted; not just physically but emotionally. Aiden couldn't help but wonder: what had happened in the last few hours since they'd seen each other?
"Would you tell me about it?"
"Tell you about what?"
"All of it. Any of it. Bhang. Herb. I still don't really know what it is. Or you could tell me about whatever happened since I left? I don't know. You just...look like you could use a friend."
God damn it all! How the Hell did Aiden do this?! Vincent knew Aiden was being genuine and just wanted to be there for him. But there were just some things he was not wanting to divulge; not that there was anything really to talk about, he thought to himself. Though Aiden had a way about him that brought down Vincent's defenses time and time again. Maybe he should just say goodnight. Right now was not a good time to discuss any of it. They were too out in the open!
On the other hand, he supposed he could just go with Aiden back to Leon's Claw, but honestly he still was wanting to go downtown. And while he wasn't sure about talking about what happened tonight, he surprisingly found he...he wouldn't actually mind explaining this whole cannabis business and what it was. In fact, he wanted to do it. But that meant taking his company on for the rest of the night and making sure he got back to the ship safely afterwards. Did he really want to deal with that? Really?
"Not here. Do you want to come downtown with me?"
Apparently so. There was no taking it back now. Vincent wasn't sure if he was going to regret this or not, but he wanted to be the one to help Aiden understand. It would also help his friend understand Vincent better as well; more of why and who he was.
"S-sure! But I don't have a way to get back without my money. Did you want to just go back to Leon's Claw first?" Aiden asked. He wanted to go with Vincent wherever he was going! What was downtown? He was curious! He could see Vincent considering it for a long moment then finally shook his head and responded, "I'll pay for your carriage back. Let's get you something to drink then when we get to my office I'll explain everything."

66137 approaches Werrington Jn. (north of Peterborough), working 6B01 12.05 Bottesford West Jn - Whitemoor Yard LDC. This had come out of a possession on the Grantham - Nottingham line, presumably where track was being replaced as the front two-thirds of this train is carrying used track panels.
I almost didn't make it here in time for this, although had a few minutes to spare as it had not long passed Tallington when I got into position on the footbridge. I spent a little too long chatting with another photographer at Beggars' Bridge, thinking about where to get the southbound Northern Belle, and only when I'd got in the car did I realise I could get this train here... but the North Bank road was apparently closed as a result of flooding, meaning I had to drive via King's Dyke level crossing and Stanground, with very slow moving traffic all the way along the A605 west of Whittlesey.

No. 7 Chattenden is six-coupled machine was built by E. E. Baguley at Burton-on-Trent in 1949 to the order of the Drewry Car Company and is now fitted with a Gardner engine developing 150 h.p. Originally it worked on the Admiralty’s Upnor and Lodge Hill Railway then later transferred to Broughton Moor, Cumbria. Capable of working passenger trains in an emergency, the locomotive is normally used for the heavier civil engineering works trains.

The last job I planned to photograph was the Deming Local. This is my regular job here and I can't remember the last time we did anything photogenic. After shooting the Rincon Local at Florida I was extremely surprised to come over the rise to Mirage on route 26 and see a headlight. Tony and Gary hauled Rincon cars out to Mirage nearing last light. With about 4 minutes of light left the sun dropped below the cloud bank. After a couple of ok roster shots I got a shot of the guys before they got moving back to Deming.

Although the name of the once-thriving goods yard lives on with the nearby industrial estate for various businesses, it ceased railfreight operations around 1969 as road transport started to take over.
I've mentioned before how friendly train staff are in America. Look carefully and you can see the engineer / driver returning our wave when he saw photos being taken. As so often there were also a couple of 'hello' blasts on the horn : )
FURX 5520 leads BNSF 2020 as they haul a freight from LyondellBasell's Equistar chemical plant outside Matagorda, TX. It is probably heading for the docks at Corpus Christi.
For the rail aficionados - FURX 5520 is a rebuilt GP38-2 locomotive. The unit was originally built as Norfolk & Western 4140, a GP38AC, in September 1971. The "FU" stands for "First Union" though that company was taken over by Wells Fargo Rail late in 2015. That is a leasing company based in Illinois.
'Oh no. Please, God, not that!' Vincent silently prayed as he turned to see what it was that had crashed beside him. There it was: his treasured wooden and copper compass broken into two pieces upon the floor.
Gazing up from the broken compass, Aiden saw the look on Vincent's face. He looked as if something had broken inside of him. The pain in his eyes for that split second was so palpable! For some reason, it was as if for that split second he could feel the captain's pain, himself! He felt a deep sense of guilt. He cleared his throat and leaned down, picking up the pieces and gently turning them in his hands to inspect them. Luckily, it didn't seem to have taken a lot of damage. In fact, the break was not a difficult fix!
Aiden stood, holding the two pieces to his chest and gazed at Vincent empathetically. "I'm so sorry, I didn't realize you were right behind me." Vincent looked up from the floor and at the compass at Aiden's chest. Before he could think of something to say, Aiden continued, "It just needs a bit of tweaking. Come on. I'll fix it!"
"Wait! Just....hold on!" Vincent looked up sharply and a stoic expression spread over his face as he shook his head. "I'll take it to get it fixed at a real mechanic's shop. Don't worry about it. Just give it-"
"But that's what I do!" Aiden responded, gesturing with his head towards the door. "My father runs an engineering workshop not far from here. I'll fix it for you, free of charge. It's my fault it's broken." Vincent stared now at Aiden's face. He could see the pleading look in his eyes and that partial hopeful smile. There was no way he was gonna let this kid work on his compass! He opened his mouth to demand the compass back when Aiden pleaded, "Please?" Vincent clenched his teeth as he felt his will suddenly break. What the hell?! He gave a sigh and closed his eyes before responding in a resigned tone, "Fine. Lead the way."
Aiden led Vincent out of the tavern and turned down the street away from the city square. It was a short walk and soon they were heading down Craftsman Alley. As they walked, Aiden heard his name called a couple of times by some of the smiths and merchants. He would always smile and wave back. He led Vincent down towards the end of the street towards a sturdy looking two story house. The sign above the stairs read: Anderson & Sons Engineering.
Aiden was surprised to find that the shop was locked up. His father must be out running errands. Or maybe he was having lunch with Ms. Moore from down the street! He let himself into the shop and held the door open for Vincent before walking straight to his working station by the window. Aiden set down the compass and turned to light the lantern so he could work. Once he did that, he turned to the windows and opened them so they could get some fresh, cool air in here!
While Aiden began setting up, Vincent stepped hesitantly into the workshop. He glanced around, taking in the appearance of the place. It was a good size and definitely had the look of a successful engineer’s shop. He heard the sounds of a tool case being unlatched and his attention returned to the compass. He'd not spoken a word since they’d departed the tavern. He watched as Aiden began to inspect a piece of the compass under the lamplight.
Aiden selected a tiny hammer and felt a touch surprised to hear the captain finally speaking a moment later. "You said this is your father's shop?" Aiden smiled a bit as he began to tap gently on the copper with the hammer. "Yeah. He's been doing it his whole life just like me." Aiden began to fix the tiny dents, working diligently and quickly. "He even created his own unique design with the jetboard. It's a big hit with the youth out here. Heh. Other people have tried to copy his skills but they can't come close." Vincent stared at him silently, his expression giving nothing away regarding his thoughts. Though truth be told, he felt a small headache coming on again. He could tell that Aiden was a rambler. And indeed, Aiden continued to speak.
"I remember when I was a wee lad I was fascinated by old engineering books I found here in Papa's workshop. Mama taught me to read and soon enough I was building my own toys. My favorite was when I made my first paper lantern." Aiden set down the hammer and began digging in the desk for screws. "Papa was impressed and I'd even figured it out on my own and he made me his apprentice right then and there. I wanted to be like him."
"Then why do you want to go so much? You have your parents and dreams of following in your father's footsteps. Why take the chance that you'll never return home?" Vincent's question weighed on Aiden but he knew his answer already. His eyes remained focused but his mind drifted slightly. "Very recently I was reminded that you only have one life to live. My mama would say that we all go about our lives living out our own stories but rarely do we get the chance to turn it into an adventure. So when she died a few years ago, she reminded me that it's okay to follow my dreams and reach for the stars. There is so much out there and I hear the call; I want to experience more than these four walls. I've loved airships and have been fascinated all my life. So even if I don't make it, at least I tried. I love my home but there's something missing and I'm hoping I'll find it out there." Aiden licked his lips, glancing at Vincent who just stared right back at him, a touch of intensity in that oceanic blue eye of his as if he almost didn't know what to say at all to this. "I'm going to get my chance. If not today, then one day I will." He gave a small shrug, a satisfied smile on his lips as he took the needed screw and set it, grasping a small screwdriver that he needed and began to tighten it.
Vincent's gaze lowered to the compass as he listened to Aiden's long winded speech. Aiden continued, "The idea of flying the skies, working every day with the engines and finding new, creative ways to make it better sounds like heaven to me. I don't consider anything a failure because no matter what, I learn. I am an engineer. I don't want to just be a deckhand. So if today's not the day, then that's okay, you know? Every day is a gift and I plan to make the most of it."
Aiden set down the screwdriver and checked the compass. He gave a small grin and held it out to Vincent who was now staring at him once more; always so stoic. Vincent reached out to take the compass, gazing down at it and to his relief found it looked as good as before! This kid was...good. Very good. He opened it up and gazed at the inscription before gazing back at Aiden and closing it. "Thank you." "It's my pleasure, Captain. And I am very sorry about the compass. Please accept my apologies." Vincent inhaled slowly and let it out before saying, "It's fine." He stared at the boy for another few seconds then turned to go, heading for the door.
Aiden let Vincent be the one to break their gaze, that small smile upon his lips. He wasn't going to let all this get him down. He began packing up his tools once more as he heard the door opening, the captain letting himself out. However, he didn't hear it close.
Vincent stood at the door, hand on the jamb as he stared at the opposite wall and warred with himself. Oh, he was going to regret this! He turned slightly and glanced at Aiden over his shoulder. "Tomorrow at eleven o'clock, be at the South Dock at bay four. Leon's Claw is the name of the ship. Don't be late."
Aiden's eyes widened as he stared at the captain. "R-really?!" he asked in a barely contained excited voice. Vincent sighed and responded, "Really." He looked ahead, walking through the open door and closing it behind him. As he closed the door, he heard Aiden shout "YES!" through the door. Vincent shook his head and left, heading for Leon's Claw to inform his First Mate of their newest addition to the crew. "You're gonna be the death of me, kid."
