Construction on the bridge, the second to cross this river, began in 1896, with Leffert L. Buck as chief engineer, Henry Hornbostel as architect and Holton D. Robinson as assistant engineer, and the bridge opened on December 19, 1903 . At the time it was constructed, the Williamsburg Bridge set the record for the longest suspension bridge span on Earth. The record fell in 1924, when the Bear Mountain Bridge was completed.

Krzyżtopór is a castle located in the village of Ujazd, Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship, in southern Poland. It was originally built by a Polish nobleman and Voivode of Sandomierz, Krzysztof Ossoliński (1587–1645). The castle was partially destroyed during the Swedish invasion known as The Deluge in 1655, and then reduced to ruins during the war of the Bar Confederation by the Russians in 1770.
Even though extensive research has been carried out through the years, historians have been unable to fully explain all aspects of the complex. No documents have been preserved that have enabled the determination of either the date of commencement of the castle's construction or the date of its completion. The name of the architect is also unknown. Krzysztof Ossoliński was enamoured with magic. while the unique symmetry of the castle is evident even in its ruined state, the hidden meanings that may have been incorporated into virtually every part of the castle are not obvious.
The very name of the complex is a mysterious one. Krzysztof Ossoliński officially named it Krzysztofory, which is derived from Latin word Christophoros. Later, the name changed to Krzyżtopór, which is a compounding of two Polish words – krzyż ("cross", a symbol of the Catholic faith and Ossoliński's policies) and topór ("axe", the charge from the family's coat of arms). Both symbols can be seen on the gate of the castle. Also, above the gate there is the date 1631, but to what this date refers has not been firmly established.
The castle, built by Swiss engineer Wawrzyniec (Lawrence) Senes (probably born in Sent, Switzerland), is a typical example of the so-called palazzo in fortezza – an intermingling of both palace and fortress. The total size of the complex is 1.3 hectares; the length of the perimeter walls is 700 meters; the total area of all interior rooms is around 70 000 square meters. The basic design was based on the palace of Cardinal Alexander Farnese, located in the Italian village of Caprarola. Reportedly, the castle once had 365 windows (as many as days of the year), 52 rooms (as many as weeks of the year), 12 ballrooms (as many as months of the year) and also 4 towers (as many as 4 seasons of the year). For defensive purposes, the castle was erected upon a rocky hill, making it impossible for an enemy to organize an underground attack.
Krzyżtopór was furnished with amenities that were rarely seen in the 17th century, such as ventilation and heating system, and unique waterworks that provided all rooms with fresh water. Allegedly, the ceiling in one of dining rooms was made up of an aquarium containing exotic fish. Additionally, a system of dumbwaiters carried food from pantries to the upper floors.
The castle, without convenient proximity to main roads and rail connections, is visited by relatively few tourists. However, as walls, bastions and moat are relatively well-preserved, its magnitude is still very impressive. Though it is regarded as a permanent ruin, since around 90 percent of the walls have been preserved, reconstruction has been planned several times. Currently, efforts have been underway to roof the entire complex; however, this ambitious project lacks sufficient funding.

Brittle stars, an alternate common name is the 'serpent stars', are a species-rich class of echinoderms with outstanding regenerative abilities. Living under rocks or in crevices with only the tips of the arms exposed, they are known to be seafloor ecosystem engineers. They reshape the seafloor sediment surface and influence the distribution of other seafloor species. They also provide nutrition to fish, sea stars and crab predators.
Their presence in a sediment sample is one indicator of a healthy benthic community. They embody nature's fragility and resilience.

Sign on the roof of Treg Trailers, a local engineering workshop and showroom for household domestic trailers and custom built trailers. The sign on the roof is accompanied by a life-sized red trailer.
The title refers to the only engineer's name that I automatically recall from a classic Dr Who episode. Unfortunately Engineer Eckersley was a bad 'un, in league other bad 'uns to steal the valuable mining deposits.
Apparently structural engineer Joaquim Cardozo altered Oscar Niemeyer's original design, reducing the number of columns, slimmed down at both top and bottom, just touching the ground.
Warmest day so far this year presented a CSX “Powder” Mac in front of a manifest down the former EJ&E. Real friendly crew, called in like 4 people.
The Claymills Victorian pumping station is keen to encourage the next generation of engineers. This young man took us down to the the space above the boilers and explained the restoration project he was working on with his team .
This is an old one from the vault. He was a regular personality who rode his tricycle fitted with a mock-up steam engine around the ByWard Market. Haven't seen him around for over 5yrs.

Sometimes my mind goes blank when it comes to titles. This title is referring to a review of the lens I was using for this photo. In this review they call this Leica Elmarit 60 mm f2.8 lens for a soulful engineer. I think it is quite fitting to this photo which I actually think have some soul to it. What do you think?

Utah Railway engineer Stu Turner commands the controls of the RUT311 local as it rumbles into North Salt Lake, Utah, on May 15, 2012. Stu was one of the kindest railroaders I've ever met, offering a friendly wave or a trackside chat. He was tragically taken from us in July 2020 due to brain cancer.

NQSL/CN's L56621-20, the daily connection between Garneau and Fitzpatrick is seen here at MP 73.3. Engineer J.S.C is opening the throttle widely as it exit's the subdivision track at Hervey. The 12 cars rocket train is consisted of 11 empty paper boxcars bound for the Smurfit Stone plant in La Tuque and one empty gondola for the engineering dept at Fitzpatrick.

On August 31st, 2023, well known railroader Mike Del Vecchio passed away after a battle with cancer. Although I didn't know Mike too well personally, I never heard a bad word spoken about him. Seen here is him posing as the engineer on #4109 during the United Railroad Historical Society's photo shoot in Boonton.

Winter presents all kinds of interesting challenges as a photographer. The cold, snow, and ice all provide risks and rewards. I decided to brave those elements recently and hiked through a foot of powder to the top of a ridge near Durango, Colorado. My reward was quite special. The last light of the day kissed the top of 12,968 ft. Engineer Mountain while the soft pink light at the end of the day illuminated the snow below in Animas Valley.
Walking the terraced face of Toyon Canyon Landfill in Griffith Park yesterday. The entire canyon was a dump site for Los Angeles garbage from 1957 to 1985. 30,700,000 cubic yards of trash is buried here; an estimated 16,000,000 tons. The terraced face is engineered like a 500 foot high dam. There are 200 gas wells collecting methane which is used to operate a power generation facility. Other pipes and ducts manage wastewater which must be filtered and treated before channeled into the concrete canyon of the nearby Los Angeles river. The grass is green this time of year.

Idling in CPKC's Port Coquitlam rail yard, D&H (Delaware and Hudson) 7304 and engineer pose while the train builds air. Looking rather worse for wear with its decaying exterior, 7304 is the last active GP38-2 in D&H colours as of 2025. Originally built for the Lehigh Valley railroad in 1972, 7304 still soldiers on in revenue service as allegedly one of Port Coquitlam's best pullers.
This beautiful swinging bench was built by he graduating class of 2010 at Hanover College which was founded in 1827. This beautiful college has only had one major tornado in it's history. The grounds, buildings and landscaping were magnificent. It is written that Texan Woody Harrelson graduated from this college as did Indiana's Mike Pence. Both chose different paths from the same school.
