Anthotype on emulsion made from dark tulip petals. Anthocyanins appear to be pretty stable pigments, and direct sunlight for many days is required to bleach them. This long exposure was also a challenge for Epson inks that were used to make a digital positive image on inkjet transparency.

Emulsion: crushed dark tulip petals + water + little amount of ethanol

Paper: Herlitz watercolor A4 size

Exposure: one month (June-July), but few sunny days

Scanner: CanoScan 9950f

Original image taken on 35 mm BW film with red filter on lens.

Polaroid SX-70 (SLR670s) / color 600 film, emulsion lift.

Yes this has been posted on my Facebook etc, but never Flickr! This is an emulsion lift of four shots I took in our last moments in Benidorm (I was there for a project!) from the roof of our hotel. I only lifted it this year- more than a year later.

This is an example of the results of shining a light onto the shiny side of a CD on which you have placed an emulsion consisting of cooking oil and water. Just by moving your hand in front of the light you can change shapes and colors. I photographed this back in 2017, when I was experimenting with this kind of photography. Fun stuff to play with.

I have an album of these images if you enjoy abstract color and shapes. www.flickr.com/photos/9422878@N08/albums/72157625787156195

Anthotype on onion leaves emulsion. For those who have little sunlight chlorophyll emulsions might be interesting, because they need very short exposure times.

Emulsion: crushed bunch of onion leaves + 1 lid of ethanol + 2 lids of water, 3 coatings

Paper: generic watercolour SM.LT, A4 size

Exposure: 1-2 hours, afternoon, July

Scanner: CanoScan 9950f

Foma's liquid emulsion with hardener on Lokta paper 24x30 cm. Paper primed with gelatin (1%), chrome alum and ethanol (96%) before coating (as to Foma's recommendations). Didn't help much against the reactive paper impurities, one must probably seal it with varnish or some other non-water soluble treatment.

Developed in Moersch Eco 4812 (1+14), fixed in Adofix PII (hardening) and toned in Se 1+9, 60 sec.

That concludes my experiments with this Asian paper for now.

While we were in Arizona, a friend and I spent some time photographing whole milk with food dye mixed in it. The photo club that I belong to, Poly Photo club in San Diego. put on a workshop recently that included a presentation by one of our members about how to create emulsion art using whole milk, food coloring and dish washing detergent. I loved seeing the results by our members, and decided to try it. Here's a link to a website that shows exactly how to do it:

Lighting stuff: I used a bare YN560-III, in manual mode, to put some light to to the emulsion. The flash was triggered by a Yongnuo RF-603N. I've also posted a picture of the setup that I used, because sometimes people find that to be helpful. Check the first comment down below to see the setup.

More photographs of colorful emulsions (although created differently) are in my pretentiously titled Emulsion Art album.

Emulsion lift and destruction. I like the different creative techniques to customise a Polaroid. The delicacy of the emulsion lift contrasts with the destruction of part of the photograph. Polaroid week’24, day 6 - number 1

By overexposing the print by a stop and using a developer with extra potassium bromide added it produces a warmtone print.

Last week the Mill Co. 3rd Annual Exhibition opened. Mill Co. is a co-operative and the exhibition was sponsored by the Co-op so guess what the brief was? "Co-operation". This was my contribution and the description that went with it...

This piece is created using the Polaroid emulsion lift process. Each individual photograph is soaked in water until the photographic emulsion floats free. This is then transferred to the paper – each picture is part of the whole, each unremarkable in their own right, but stronger together.

The work features key buildings from the co-operative movement – the building where the Rochdale Pioneers first began on Toad Lane as well as Robert Owen’s Mill building in New Lanark, Scotland. You will also find the modern Co-op buildings, the “Rochdale Pioneers” train, and elements from the Occupy movement alongside several other geographical details.

Meanwhile, the skies are filled with starling murmurations - each bird strives to fly as close to its neighbours as possible, instantly copying any changes in speed or direction. This results in any tiny deviations by one bird being magnified and distorted by those surrounding it – a natural reflection of the co-operative.

To create this piece, I gathered open source imagery and accepted contributions from photographers across the country willing to share their work. These were then re-photographed from the screen onto Polaroid film using a specialist medical camera in order to make the transfers making a collaborative “open source” work.
