The landscape may not be turning green yet, but there's one sure sign of spring here - a ballast train!

CP 6241 and CP 6306 lead two GREX conveyor train sets south over a classic truss bridge approaching Marquette, IA. This curve across the floodplain of the Yellow River and the Mississippi Backwater slough is below the bluffs Effigy Mounds National Monument, on the ridge in the background. The crew, running under the symbol BAL-05, has been battling a bit of congestion this morning around Harpers Ferry, but is finally getting to run out the last few miles for a crew change ahead at the depot. The former SOO SD60 duo sure brings a nice pop of color to the otherwise dull early April landscape. I’ve always liked this bridge but the ground view has always felt like it could use a slight bit of elevation. I don’t shoot “wide” with the drone as much anymore (I prefer the far-less-distorted 3x tele of the Air3 more often lately) but this scene and height seemed to suit.

A little more of the story for those that care:

The CKPC has started the annual warm-weather blitz of loads out of the pit at Waterloo, WI which supplies rock for many of the former ICE (nee-Milwaukee Road) lines into Iowa. And thankfully for us railfans anyway, these trains seem to be some of the last holdouts for some of the EMD SD products still getting to regularly run the mainline. So on this sunny beautiful Sunday morning, when I heard the CP 6241 get a warrant out of Bluff (La Crescent, MN) for a run down the river, I drove north to meet them.

The BAL-05 had a good run to Harpers Ferry, but then was stalled out by traffic ahead. There were at least 7 trains within about 25 miles of Marquette at one point for a couple hours: 4 trying to go south, two trying to come up from Dubuque and turn the corner towards Mason City, and one poor northbound that got hosed at Harpers Ferry for quite a while.

The CP Marquette Subdivision from Marquette to Bluff is one of the last bits of track that’s still under Track Warrant Control on this now-critical link between Davenport (Nahant) and St. Paul (there are a couple others, but CTC has been installed most of the way now), so the first trick DS was quite busy trying to keep on top of issuing and canceling warrants to keep everybody moving. It sometimes got a little messy (there was a shove move up a different leg of the wye in Marquette required at one point to make a meet work…). But trains eventually got to where they were supposed to be going! And since this BAL-05 was also following a slower train ahead, it allowed me to get 10 separate runbys over the course of the afternoon of this fine duo. A good early spring day even if it was still the "brown season!"

This screw jack was used on the cannons at Fort Pulaski during the Civil War. Fort Pulaski National Monument is an impressive reminder of 19th century engineering initiative and design.

Unfortunately, the amazing work that went into building this fort on an island little more than a marshy sandbar in the Savannah River, ended up being superseded by the modernization of artillery from smooth bore to rifled cannons prior to its implementation in coastal defense. Thirty hours into the initial siege of this fort by Union forces operating from Tybee Island, the 17' thick brick walls were breached by rifled shells and the commander, Col. Charles H. Olmstead, surrendered rather than expose his troops to certain death if a magazine were to be breached by further fire.

The simplicity of the pictured mechanism is brilliant, effective, and a key component in all kinds of machines since the first century BC.

The Snostskali River meanders through the Sno Valley, adding a dynamic element to the picture. In autumn, the river is filled with meltwater from the mountains, creating a powerful and lively scene. Along the banks, low shrubs and trees are dressed in warm autumn colours. The valley is a combination of gentle hills and steep slopes, typical of this region of the Caucasus. Here and there, agricultural terraces are visible, which are evidence of centuries of habitation and careful use of the landscape. Sno is a picturesque mountain village near Stepantsminda, a popular base for trekking and mountaineering in the Kazbegi region of northern Georgia. Hiking trails to the Chaukhi Pass attract adventurers. This pass leads to Juta, another mountain village that serves as a starting point for treks to the impressive Chaukhi peaks. The North Chaukhi Mountain towers over the landscape with its height of approximately 3,842 meters. The region is known for its rugged, untouched nature and breathtaking views of the Caucasus. The snow-capped peaks of the North Chaukhi Mountain form a beautiful contrast with the warm tones of the valley. Sno and its surroundings are distinguished by dramatic landscapes, medieval fortresses and the proximity of the imposing Kazbek Mountain. The area is a popular destination for hikers and nature lovers looking for adventure and peace in nature.

The North Chaukhi Mountain stands at approximately 3,842 meters. This impressive peak is part of the Chaukhi Range in the Greater Caucasus, located in Georgia's Kazbegi district. Hikes around the Chaukhi Pass, situated at an elevation of about 3,338 meters, are popular among adventurers exploring the region. The mountain serves as a stunning backdrop to the valleys surrounding Sno and Juta. In the foreground, the Snostskali River winds through the valley, contributing to the area's breathtaking natural landscape.

Near Kemer, Antalya, Turkey. Never a sunset image to be had in Kemer as by late afternoon the sun has gone behind the mountains. I guess I could take the cable car up the mountain. Task for next year perhaps!

In most cases, elevation helps the shot, as you can capture the larger scene at hand, and this one is no exception. OCs MILL job departs NS at Mingo Jct headed home to Miller Station.

It's been an interesting spring here in the Jackson Hole valley. The elk, which usually head to higher elevations during spring when the snowpack starts to melt, have remained in the valleys. I've seen gigantic herds just hanging around. Herds with hundreds of members, all waiting for Mother Nature to say move out. It has been a sight to behold!

*See the video below of one such herd.

Clouds left from the previous night’s storm are still tangled in a mountain peak. Rain fell in the low lands, but the higher elevations received a decorative dusting of snow.

Getting back to posting some more images from this fall, but let’s head down south to the bayou. A place that I connect with every time I visit. I never expect to come home with much after my visits, but surprisingly I come back with a few keepers that I’m happy with. There’s something about gliding through the waters of the bayou that is so fascinating to me. The creepy, eerie, and stark beauty of these swamps is something special. It’s very zen like for me in many ways.

Lots of new images to share in the future!

2020-09-06, Day 2

The milky waters of Dinwoody Creek weave amongst the granite boulders that congregate in the upper, alpine reaches of the watershed, as evening light gathers in the sky, Fitzpatrick Wilderness, Wind River Range, Wyoming.

Gannett Peak is the highest point in Wyoming (13,810 ft; 4,210 m), and the mountain is flanked by Gannett Glacier on its northeast slope, and by Dinwoody Glacier on its southeast slope. A prominent ridge extends in a northeasterly direction from the peak and divides the Gannett drainage from the Dinwoody drainage, and it is this ridge that looms to the right in this image. The Dinwoody Glacier lies upstream and out of sight to the right.

Once we'd finished dinner and cleaned up, we left camp to seek the high country evening light. We climbed 800 feet in a little over two miles, and we found ourselves right at treeline when the light began to fade in earnest. In our haste we neglected to bring headlamps with us, so we determined that the vantage you see here represented the end of the pursuit and evening's last call. We already surmised we wouldn't make it back to the tent before dark, but we wanted to find our way across the many, braided channels of Gannett Creek before it became too dark to find the safest route across the right set of stepping stones and logs. In true wilderness style, there are no bridges to speak of for the crossings and some channels are mighty fast, cold, and deep.

Here's an image from about a month ago when the leaves just started to emerge in the higher elevations of the Hudson Highlands. Watching the valley fall into shadow as night sets in is always an enjoyable way to end the day.

"Elevation" by U2

is the third track and third single release from U2's 2000 album, All That You Can't Leave Behind. Featuring a thunderous beat, a variety of sound effects on the central guitar riff and an easy rhyming lyric for the audience to shout along with, it was highly effective in its concert-opening role on the Elevation Tour (named after the song) and became a hit in the United States and the United Kingdom. It was also their second #1 single in the Netherlands. In 2002, "Elevation" won "Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal".

Have you ever noticed that a valley exists beneath most peaks? Maybe that is just the way it is supposed to be.

The Teton Mountain Range from the Idaho side.

A two and a half hour drive from home, the drive up the hill on a road built for the B.C. Tel/Telus radio site gets you to beautiful views and a series alpine meadows up at Blackwall Peak in Manning Park.

Elevation 2063m / 6768ft.

Gazillions of wildflowers and grasses. As you circumnavigate the peak, you see the various phases of bloom. Areas of Southern exposure are quite advanced, areas of Northern exposure are a little behind. Just Magic! ☺
