Welcome To “ask design”

Established in 2000, “ask design” is the brainchild of the talented Abdul Salam Khan whose passion for design, innovation and re-invention was supplemented with formal academics in 1993 with an extensive course at the M H Saboo Siddik Polytechnic, Mumbai

His stint at Saboo Siddik was followed up with an intensive professional experience at one of the India’s leading design firm – Associated Architects. Guided by the able and renowned master Ar. Mahesh Khanolkar.

With over 22 years of design experience and 15 years of teaching experience at reputed Architectural colleges of Mumbai & Navi Mumbai. He also started his own design academy - Academy of Art & Design at Nerul, Navi Mumbai in the year 2001, where along with Interior Design courses, Fashion Design courses are also conducted.

Staunch believer of working as a team, Salam’s creative and technical staff is grouped in teams that follow projects all the way through from concept to completion. Each team comprises of team leaders and team members with expertise in various aspects like project management, visualization, design development etc. Our team of architects and designers strive constantly to create projects that stand out because of the distinct approach towards design, detail and the latest technology. Research is critical to be competitive in an ever-evolving international design market.

“ask design” believes good design is produced from careful study and research, combined with technical knowledge and artistic judgment. Attention to detail, proportions and scale, together with common sense ensure the finished product fully develops the potential within the concept. Past and current projects include commercial, residential, health clubs, spas and salons, hospitality, pharmaceutical, exhibition, institutional, mixed-use and high end residential interior projects. Extensive use of CAD and computer 3D Modeling, which is done in house, helps the client to visualize their project in the best possible manner.

All experimentation with space, light and material can then be done using this platform till the final result is achieved. “ask design” offers integrated design services for the built environment, encompassing master planning, architectural, landscape, interior, lighting and furniture design.

The elevators in the building I currently work at are, generously speaking, old. Lots of old technology and even more old equipment. So a few guys have been working there for the past few months trying to update and retrofit them with state mandated upgrades. This is Shane, who's been there day in and day out trying to get the work complete, along with making an hour and a half drive one way everyday, leaving behind his wife and daughter.

That's pretty respectable if you ask me.

In summer 2004, Ian and I took a hike in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, where he wanted to take pictures of surfaces with interesting textures. There were an alarming number of spiders, thus the title of this set. All photos are by Ian O'Donnell.

So many tools!

Removing the plaster from the stack is a bit dicey. Wouldn't want to break the pipe!

This tool must save people from getting shocked so many times per day. I watched as Mark tested every wire.

It is bitchin' - don't deny it.
