Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and a delegation of administration officials traveled to the U.S. Virgin Islands today to survey the damage caused by Hurricane Irma. The trip comes after Governor Mapp requested that Governor Cuomo travel to the region to survey the damage. Governor Cuomo has pledged to identify how New York can best provide additional assistance to the impacted area as they begin the recovery process. The New York delegation includes experts with a range of experience in incident management and disaster recovery at the local, state and federal levels dealing with crises such as Superstorm Sandy, Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee. During the assessment, the delegation is using this expertise to work with U.S. Virgin Island officials to determine the state of critical infrastructure, as well as identify how best to allocate resources. Sunset, in Lititz, Pennsylvania on October 15, 2012, was a joy to behold. No matter how I tried to get around it, the electrical towers were central in my view. I finally decided to just go with it. It was an interesting reminder of the method by which we get electricity in our homes.

This is what the power lines looked like right by my house after a giant explosion rang through them. An explosion, then a huge fireball engulfed the transformers. All three red lights started blinking, and the storm still rages on.

Major city of Cap Haitian and surrounding villages (like Acul du Nord) have a nightmare of an electrical grid. Rolling blackouts are routine. A neighborhood might have electricity for an hour an evening...if that. We spent most of our evenings in the dark.

There's something starkly beautiful about electrical lines.

Officials don't allow this in rich neighborhoods nor gated-communities.

Yes, there is a danger of electrical "arching" -- meaning if the right conditions exist, a killer bolt can jump you!

Took a weird route and got stuck waiting for a train to cross the tracks. It was a really nice day, though, and I wasn't in any hurry, so I took some pictures of the stopped train and also this pylon and generally just sort of relaxed.
