Eixample is the "new city" in Barcelona. Meaning "the expansion," it's the part of Barcelona designed in the late 18th and early 19th century just north of the Old City. Its streets are very orderly -- a square grid -- with a few diagonal avenues running through it.
You'll primarily find 5-6 story buildings where the ground floor is commercial (restaurants, markets, bodegas, etc.) and all the upper floors are residential. At each intersection, all the corners are slightly recessed to form a small circle.
From street level, you'll notice the balconies, mostly wrought-iron or of a uniform color. If you can find a way to see an aerial view of Eixample, you'll definitely see how square and orderly the street layout is.

I've grown accustomed to solo dinners while on this trip. I don't even bring a book anymore, I just people-watch and remember to keep my mouth shut. Chowhounders recommended this place and I got there early enough to get a seat. The food was delicious! Just as I was leaving, I noticed a huge line waiting for a spot. Worth the wait, I think!

L'Eixample is smack bang in the middle of Barcelona. Its grid patterned streets are host to a number of striking buildings and fantastic architecture, especially around the area around Passeig de Gracia and La Ramblas. Here you will also find the extraordinary Sagrada Familia. This controversial church, unfinished because of the untimely death of its architect, Antoni GaudÃ, in 1926, has become the city's most visited monument. A perfect area for visitors looking to explore the city, L’Eixample has brilliant transport links and there is always plenty to see and do.
