April/06 - When I came to Barcelona my dad suggested that one interesting photo project would be balconies. While balconies in Barcelona - as any other architectural detail - are very interesting and varied, I've become fascinated by the sunrooms/bay windows in some of the buildings. These were shot along Passeig San Joan.
L'Eixample is smack bang in the middle of Barcelona. Its grid patterned streets are host to a number of striking buildings and fantastic architecture, especially around the area around Passeig de Gracia and La Ramblas. Here you will also find the extraordinary Sagrada Familia. This controversial church, unfinished because of the untimely death of its architect, Antoni Gaudí, in 1926, has become the city's most visited monument. A perfect area for visitors looking to explore the city, L’Eixample has brilliant transport links and there is always plenty to see and do. Check out Oh-Barcelona's L'Eixample apartments or find out more about specific apartment.

Eixample is the "new city" in Barcelona. Meaning "the expansion," it's the part of Barcelona designed in the late 18th and early 19th century just north of the Old City. Its streets are very orderly -- a square grid -- with a few diagonal avenues running through it.
You'll primarily find 5-6 story buildings where the ground floor is commercial (restaurants, markets, bodegas, etc.) and all the upper floors are residential. At each intersection, all the corners are slightly recessed to form a small circle.
From street level, you'll notice the balconies, mostly wrought-iron or of a uniform color. If you can find a way to see an aerial view of Eixample, you'll definitely see how square and orderly the street layout is.
