L'Eixample is smack bang in the middle of Barcelona. Its grid patterned streets are host to a number of striking buildings and fantastic architecture, especially around the area around Passeig de Gracia and La Ramblas. Here you will also find the extraordinary Sagrada Familia. This controversial church, unfinished because of the untimely death of its architect, Antoni GaudÃ, in 1926, has become the city's most visited monument. A perfect area for visitors looking to explore the city, L’Eixample has brilliant transport links and there is always plenty to see and do. Check out Oh-Barcelona's L'Eixample apartments.

Homenatge a Joan Brossa.
I have been wanting to visit this church since I was 17 and read about it in a Spanish textbook in High School. It felt so strange to finally be there...it did not disappoint. We took an elevator up on of the spires, crossed a small bridge to another spire and then walked all the way down that spire to the ground level through a very tiny spiral staircase. This place is insanely tall and my legs started shaking on the way down, probably both from the sheer awesomeness of it all and from overexertion!
Casa Milà has been built by Anton Gaudì during the years 1906-1912 in the Eixample district of Barcelona (Spain). Actually, the design of the Catalan architect could not be followed at all, because of city building standards, but it is nevertheless astonishing.
It’s like a polite and powerful seawall, made of 6 floors of armed cement, plastered with calcareous stone from the Region of El Garraf and Vilafranca del Penedès, non far from Barcelona. The stones are assembled so that the façade seems a continuous surface. Casa Mila is, right because of the stone, known as La Pedrera (The Quarry), too.
It is a Modernist example, in which the curved, zoomorphic line design every element without interruptions.
The Sea concept is expressed by the wrought iron doors and balconies, by wooden windows, by plaster interior decoration, … the building is conceived like a living entity, that informed itself in every detail under a well-identified matrix. The furniture, too, had to be part of the complex.

Josep Campeny Santamaria, Igualada (Anoia)
1911

The base is made from stone quarried from Montjuïc, which serves as sink and has a bronze sculpture that represents a kid holding a frog, with the frog serving as the spigot. It's made in a naturalist style, with very realistic anatomy and movement and a very expressive pose.
It was completely restored in January 2010 due to an accident with a film crew in October 2009, which threw the top part to the ground damaging the stone and sculpture itself. The insurance company paid for the damages.

The BasÃlica de la Sagrada FamÃlia, Basilica of the Holy Family'), also known as the Sagrada FamÃlia, is a large unfinished Roman Catholic minor basilica in the Eixample district of Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. Designed by Spanish/Catalan architect Antoni Gaudà (1852–1926), his work on the building is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. On 7 November 2010, Pope Benedict XVI consecrated the church and proclaimed it a minor basilica.
On 19 March 1882, construction of the Sagrada FamÃlia began under architect Francisco de Paula del Villar. In 1883, when Villar resigned, Gaudà took over as chief architect, transforming the project with his architectural and engineering style, combining Gothic and curvilinear Art Nouveau forms. Gaudà devoted the remainder of his life to the project, and he is buried in the crypt. At the time of his death in 1926, less than a quarter of the project was complete.
Relying solely on private donations, the Sagrada FamÃlia's construction progressed slowly and was interrupted by the Spanish Civil War. In July 1936, revolutionaries set fire to the crypt and broke their way into the workshop, partially destroying GaudÃ's original plans, drawings and plaster models, which led to 16 years of work to piece together the fragments of the master model. Construction resumed to intermittent progress in the 1950s. Advancements in technologies such as computer aided design and computerised numerical control (CNC) have since enabled faster progress and construction passed the midpoint in 2010. However, some of the project's greatest challenges remain, including the construction of ten more spires, each symbolising an important Biblical figure in the New Testament. It is anticipated that the building can be completed by 2026, the centenary of GaudÃ's death.
The basilica has a long history of splitting opinion among the residents of Barcelona: over the initial possibility it might compete with Barcelona's cathedral, over GaudÃ's design itself, over the possibility that work after GaudÃ's death disregarded his design, and the 2007 proposal to build a tunnel of Spain's high-speed rail link to France which could disturb its stability. Describing the Sagrada FamÃlia, art critic Rainer Zerbst said "it is probably impossible to find a church building anything like it in the entire history of art", and Paul Goldberger describes it as "the most extraordinary personal interpretation of Gothic architecture since the Middle Ages". The basilica is not the cathedral church of the Archdiocese of Barcelona, as that title belongs to the Cathedral of the Holy Cross and Saint Eulalia.
