I have tried many times to get good photos of this interesting small day-flying moth, but it is a very shy species. However, it was a muggy and overcast morning, and those are pretty much perfect conditions for photographing insects. You don't have a shadow to scare them, and they can't readily fly. Unless you bump the leaf they're sitting on or get so close they panic, you can photograph most species at will, and this specimen sat perfectly still while I got several shots. (It never did leave.)

This is in the far south-west of Cornwall, on the Penwith Peninsula beyond St Ives and just a couple of miles from St Just, which was once an important centre of the tin-mining industry.

The heyday of the mining complex at Botallack was in the mid-19th century. There were several shafts with their engine houses, including these two at the base of the cliffs, known as the Crowns. In 1858 work began on sinking the Boscawen Diagonal Shaft at the Crowns to provide access to the seaward extension of its lodes of ore a third of a mile under the Atlantic. Many distinguished visitors came to Botallack to descend the shaft. Among them were the Prince and Princess of Wales (later Edward VII and Queen Alexandra) who were here on July 24th, 1865. In an accident in 1863 a wagon chain broke, sending eight men and a boy hurtling to their deaths. This mine was exhausted by 1874, and ceased to be used.

The shafts were some 1,600 feet deep. Tin was not the only metal to be mined, and copper and other minerals such as arsenic were also mined and processed.

It's an example of a new evergreen theme on BrickCentral called "Build Details".

We're encouraging LEGO photographers to put away their minifigs and shoot interiors or exteriors of LEGO models where the focus is on a brick-built detail.

I hope that it helps people develop skills beyond portraiture, and create some balance in the LEGO photography community.

You can read more about it on my Tumblr: at.tumblr.com/fourbrickstall/eight-stud-interiors-i-alway...

While trekking across the backroads of Colorado, I stumbled upon this abandoned Pontiac Eight that was resting peacefully in an overgrown field.

The "Buick Eight" name on top of the front grille frame (hardly visible because of moss and rust) comes from the adoption of a straight 8 cylinders engine, 4,3 liters, 112 HP on the "Super" series

For many years Jaguar built almost identical models under the Jaguar and the Daimler brand. The Daimlers were the most luxurious ones. This Eight is from 2000. It has a 4.0 litre V8 engine. The Daimler brand was ended in 2007.

The tactful cactus by your window

Surveys the prairie of your room

The mobile spins to its collision

Clara puts her head between her paws

They've opened shops down the West side

Will all the cacti find a home

But the key to the city

Is in the sun that pins the branches to the sky.

Just another from Day 1 of my outing with steam down in the canelands.

US Sugar Corporation's recently restored 4-6-2 Pacific number 148 appears as if it's floating atop the field of cane as it rolls east (railroad south) at about MP 936.2 (measured from Richmond, VA) at the head of the AAPRCO 'Sugarland Limited' special operating on rails now belonging to modern day shortline South Central Florida Express. They are heading from Sebring to Clewiston where the eight historic cars will be based at the railroad’s headquarters for the next several days of rare mileage excursions and tours.

Wholly owned by US Sugar Corp. as their common carrier railroad subsidiary, this particular trackage was built about 1922 by the Atlantic Coast Line and remained with ACL successors SCL and SBD until becoming part of CSX. The latter finally sold this branch line in June 1990 to the Brandywine Valley Railroad, a Lukens Steel Company subsidiary which operated it as the SCFE. Four years later they sold the railroad to its largest customer, U.S. Sugar which operates it as a separate company semi independent from the 119 miles of private non common carrier branch lines they already owned.

Clean burning (it's fired with used restaurant vegetable oil) 148 was built for the Florida East Coast Railway in 1920 at Alco's Richmond Works and served for the FEC for 32 years including operating over the famed 'Overseas Railroad' to Key West until that line was wiped out by the 1935 hurricane.

From 1952 to 1968, 148 was owned by US Sugar for use on their private cane hauling railroad. Later used in excursion service on the Black River and Western and Morristown and Erie Railroads it then languished with different owners for decades until being repatriated to Clewiston and restored over a four year period.
