Op de eerste van de maand februari werd gemeld dat CXX Flirt 5038 'voor het eggie' reed. Na wat rocketscience werd duidelijk dat de Flirt zich tussen 16:10 en 16:30 op Edesch grondgebied zou begeven. Na de camera gepakt te hebben werd direct met de fiets naar het buitengebied van Ede gefietst. Helaas is bijna het gehele tracé tussen Ede en Lunteren voorzien van hekken, op één punt na. De overweg bij de Woutersweg is een, in mijn ogen, geschikt fotopunt voor treinen uit de richting Lunteren. Keuze snel gemaakt, geduld was het enige wat nog van mij geëist werd.
CXX Flirt 5038 maakt zijn tweede (test)slag naar Ede-Wageningen. Om 16:08 passeert deze de Woutersweg tussen Ede en Lunteren als trein 31343 naar Ede-Wageningen.

when i was a kid, i used to spend time each summer on an island in the middle of a mountain lake in the northwestern woods of maine. and i remember how the local folks always measured the seasons by the ice. spring -- and the onslaught of us tourists -- always began with "ice out," when the lake ice had melted just enough to allow boats to pass, so the workers could get out to the island and start working. i used to look through the back pages of the camp ledger, where the date of each year's ice out, going back at least a hundred years, was written out in careful, looping script. and my favorite part was when i could detect how the management had changed hands: new handwriting.

i came home tonite to find a little box from egg theorem on the dining table.
and inside that box was a woman of the cloth, desperate to get out and release the spitting electric venom pent up inside her....
poor thing.
This is a combination haul from Saturday and Sunday. The little Kelly dollies and the seashells were actually from Savers. Last week Colleen and I had our annual eye exams. She really needed to get new lenses for her glasses. It was six years overdue, and the lenses she already had were super scratched. We had to order them after our appointments, and then pick up the new lenses the following week. Colleen had to drop off her frames for an hour while they put the new lenses in them. Anyways, to kill time, we thought we'd go back to Savers. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the toy section was chocked full of dollies again. The week before, there were literally only three dolls in the entire store! The shelves were empty. These Kelly dolls were clustered into two different bags. There were actually way more of them, but I tried to only pick the ones I really wanted (who were mostly dressed). I mainly wanted one of the bags for "1st Edition" Lil' Friends Chelsie. She's the only one of our original childhood set that had not yet been "upgraded." My childhood Chelsie is battered from being the favorite Kelly in our collection for years. This girl has all her hair intact--no baldness and no split ends! I also wanted the Potty Training Kelly outfit for my duplicated doll. She's been waiting for her factory ensemble since 2011...it's about time she had it! I got luck because I realized after opening and identifying all the dolls that some had their original outfits still!
The seashells I bought simply because they'd make great photo props. They are easy to store too because I already have a small container of shells from my childhood. This set had some interesting pieces, like a tiny seahorse! As for the two boxed Barbies, they were from the flea market on Sunday. Some regular sellers restocked their boxed doll supply. Believe me, there were many more tempting dolls. But I desperately wanted these two. I recall ogling Sleeping Beauty at the store when I was younger (I love this whole line of fairy tale collector Barbies). A few years ago, the same seller had the AA version of Star Skater. I always regretted not buying her, but I didn't have a lot of money to spend on dolls back then. So naturally I was ecstatic to see the Asian variant make an appearance. She also had a picture of Michelle Kwan on her package--my favorite figure skater of all time growing up!

A nice anecdote from a crook from earlier times. It is about the mysterious disappearance of the peat ship Annigje 2, which was piloted by the infamous skipper Egbert Vosch, nicknamed Kwoaie Eggie. They robbed the Oranjekanaal and looted other ships. When they really raised a church on shore, it was enough for God. That intervened and the ship was sucked up in the clouds and disappeared with man and mouse. Historians dismiss this story as a folklore, but the locals know better. On foggy days, they still see a shadow of the ship floating in the mist.

PERSONAL FUN FACT: It's ironic how things work out sometimes. Up until 2020, I never owned a Liana doll. Sure, I had outfits that originally came on Liana dolls, and I had contemplated buying them at stores as a kid. But for whatever reason, I just never had any luck at secondhand places. I got not one, but two Liana dolls in 2020. I found them both in baggies we bought at Savers after Colleen got new lenses put in her glasses. I didn't know at the time I purchased the dolls that they were Liana. I recalled seeing Pool Party Liana as a kid in stores, and lusting for her constantly. But Easter Eggie Liana isn't a gal I remember seeing. Then again, I wasn't that keen for holiday themed dolls back then. This Liana was one of the only gals from those baggies that had her original outfit. Granted, she wasn't wearing it...another one of the Kelly dolls was. Only she and Performer Maria were lucky enough to be reunited with their ensembles. I personally find Pool Party Liana to be cuter than this lady. But that short hair is a unique feature (and I am biased as I wanted Pool Party Liana as a kid). But that's not to imply that Miss Easter Eggie isn't darling. Looking at her melts my heart, and I LOVE the name of this set!
The idea for Eggie's apron is taken from a vintage book of aprons printed in 1934. The book contains apron patterns for both children and adults.

PERSONAL FUN FACT: Miss Liana is very lucky to have this outfit. Of the nine Kelly dolls I got at Savers the same day as her, only one other girl was fortunate enough to be reunited with her outfit. I thought that this dress looked rather festive and spring themed. But I didn't realize it was supposed to be a painted egg. But looking at it now, I can definitely see that in the design. The most interesting part of this outfit is the fact that it is somewhat padded. It is bulky in order to give Liana that egg shape. I love squishing this dress for that reason (it feels very satisfying). Plus, this feature makes the fabric hold onto scents. Once I laundered this outfit it smelled fantastic, and therefore it makes Liana smell fresh when she wears it in storage! It is a shame I didn't get the matching hat, as it adds to that cracked egg look. But the dress is the most important feature, so I'm grateful Liana has it!
