The TIE fighter, produced in large numbers, light, cheap, efficient. They all look the same, no insignia, no markings. Well, almost no markings, there is the one with a large pentagon shaped emblem on the side but that’s about it. The TIE fighter is an intimidating sight, a faceless adversary, they just keep coming one after another.

I’ve wanted a TIE fighter for photography for a long time, but there is a catch. Not just any TIE would do, it’d preferably have to be a studio scale model, accurate to the last detail. But, alas, I cannot afford one.

The TIE fighter wings are quite special, you see. The material they’re made with, the Koolshade screen, does not really exist anymore. The machine used to manufacture it broke down long ago and now, decades later, the remaining stocks are extremely low. The original vintage Koolshade is VERY expensive. There is a newer version, it’s almost the same, almost indistinguishable from the original, but ultimately different. Without the vintage Koolshade, the accuracy is out the window and alternative routes open.

Many years ago I bought this Hasbro toy. It’s fairly close to the real thing, proportions are off and it’s a little smaller, but it’s not all that bad. Since I am not gonna get the real thing, this is a good substitute. I made some tweaks to it and hit it with new paint. Actually, maybe this is more fun than a true replica. For starters, it was really cheap. And since it’s a toy it doesn’t break that easily, this is one for rougher missions.

I haven’t built the wings yet, I will do that later. Until then I’ll play with the cockpit unit a little. I figured it would work like that, without wings, in case of emergency, like an escape pod of a sorts. Maybe even on Hoth.

Not Very Efficient

We came across a sweet deal on energy efficient, environmentally conscious LED light bulbs so we decided to install them throughout our house. We had spiral CFL lights before, and we donated all of them so they will still be put to good use. LED lights do produce a nice warm glow, similar to incandescent bulbs. I just used a flash here to make it look cool! :o)

LEDs are much better than incandescent or CFLs because they don't contain mercury, they use far less energy and they last a lifetime.

L'odio

poi corre tutto solo,

l’odio. L’odio.

Una smorfia di estasi amorosa

gli deforma il viso.

Oh, quegli altri sentimenti

malaticci e fiacchi!

Da quando la fratellanza

può contare sulle folle?

La compassione è mai

arrivata per prima al traguardo?

Il dubbio quanti volenterosi trascina?

Lui solo trascina, che sa il fatto suo.

Capace, sveglio, molto laborioso…

e l’umorismo grasso

della colonna che vigorosa le sovrasta.

È un maestro del contrasto

tra fracasso e silenzio

tra sangue rosso e neve bianca

e soprattutto non lo annoia mai

il motivo del lindo carnefice

sopra la vittima insozzata.

In ogni istante è pronto a nuovi compiti.

Se deve aspettare aspetterà.

Lo dicono cieco. Cieco?

Ha la vista acuta del cecchino

e guarda risoluto al futuro.

Lui solo.

Gateway to the Olympic site, the Olympic Park Station handled an estimated 80 percent of the 1.2 million people attending the 2000 Olympic Games. The brief for the station called for the creation of a world-class venue that could comfortably accommodate up to 50,000 patrons safely, efficiently and comfortably during times of peak movement.

The Olympic Coordination Authority's (OCA) public access policy had a strong impact on the design, as did the extensive environmental agenda adopted for the Games. Its architectural expression needed to be compatible with the surrounding precinct and provide a seamless integration with the public domain.

Consideration was also given to the subsequent uses of the site, when the site would revert to a modest through-put station between major events.

An individual approach

The 7,000 square metre station is a celebration of rail travel, designed in the tradition of the great glass and iron railway stations of the nineteenth century. Yet the response is distinctly Australian in character, embracing qualities of openness, directness and clarity. The design is responsive to climate, whereby the canopy, like a veranda, provides protection from rain and sun, and access to natural light and breezes.

The design deliberately eschews ornament. Its poetry, visual interest and richness comes from the expression of a carefully ordered structure and the crafted detailing of materials and junctions.

An innovative response

The elegantly vaulted roof provides the building with a dramatic visual presence. The generous spatial volumes enhance the sense of arrival, proving an immediate, clear and legible connection with the external environment. The monolithic base is carved into the ground to embed the platforms and retaining walls, while a lightweight, folded steel roof, free of services, floats above. By half emerging the station, HASSELL effectively 'lifted the lid' off the typical underground station box. While the base is firmly embedded in the earth, the canopy element hovers above. An ingenious steel vaulted concertina structure delivers an exceptionally thin and light roof, minimising the use of materials.

Designed to be different

The station design has a clear and direct expression of structure and function. The linear qualities of the form set it apart from the surrounding sporting venues.

In major event mode, the station operates seamlessly to handle up to 1,600 people every two minutes. A simple, logical and highly innovative arrangement of platforms and vertical movement systems, tested and refined through computer passenger flow modelling, ensures the easy transition of patrons to and from the station.

The station is largely indirectly lit by bouncing light from the natural reflectors formed by the roof. This has the effect of increasing the perceived light levels in the station and reducing the need for artificial light.

The spectacular roof is a defining feature of the building. Its curved leaf-like form was inspired by native gum trees, which feature prominently in the surrounding landscape. After dark, the underside of the canopy is illuminated to signify the station entry and highlight the sense of occasion and theatricality created by the building at night.

An otter putting on a display of how efficient of a fisher it is.

This otter spent well over two hours feeding through this opening in the ice. The skill it exhibited was quite apparent as it often surfaced with more than one fish. In this photo, notice that it has a fish in its mouth, and two more actively flopping on the ice prior to being devoured.

9 April 2000.

Arrived in stop-over Buenos Aires by efficient ferry Buquebus across majestic Rio de la Plata from Uruguay, I'd planned to walk in the great ecological reserve Costanera Sur. The weather was sparkling with sunlight and great blue skies... But the Park was closed due to 'mal tiempo'; apparently the winds and tides were too dangerous for human beings. So I walked a bit along the tree-lined avenues. Here and there some weedy plots, such as this one of some kind of Euryops, a shrublike Aster.

To my delight lots of Thick-Thighed Hoverflies. But wat caught Sony's special attention was this wonderfully brown polka-dotted or checkered American White Skipper. The Spanish name Ajedrezada de Lunar is so much fancier than that 'White Skipper'!

1926 Hanomag Kommissbrot

1 cilinder 499 cc 10 pk

The Hanomag 2/10 PS is an economy car manufactured by Hanomag from 1924 until 1928. It was one of the first cars with envelope styling.[ It was affectionately referred to as the Kommissbrot ("Army Bread") due to its identical shape with the usual loaf of bread used by the German army at the time. "Kommiss" is German slang for "Army", short for "commissioned."

The 2/10 PS (two taxable / ten brake horsepower) had a single-cylinder half litre engine behind the passengers. The rear axle was chain-driven, with no differential. With a fuel consumption of 4.0 litres per 100 kilometres it was the world's most fuel efficient mass-production car between the two World Wars due to the low-friction one-cylinder engine and its very light weight.[

While these efficient machines are made in cutting-edge tech factories, it soon becomes evident that the world they are brought into is much less organized and adaptations may be required.

The Bulimba ferry terminal was built in 1922 for the Balmoral Shire Council, then responsible for the efficient servicing of several ferry routes across the Brisbane River.

Since the days of the convict settlement at Moreton Bay when a punt was poled between the main settlement and the south bank of the river, ferries have been a vital transport facility for Brisbane. The river twists and loops through the city and cross-river access is important in linking city and suburbs and greatly reducing travel time between them. Although the first bridge linked the city and South Brisbane in 1862, no other bridges were built for many years, public transport was limited and few people had private transport until after World War Two. People who needed to commute to work and to access shopping and entertainment facilities used cross-river ferries on a daily basis. Ferries were the only major transport service provided by metropolitan local authorities as responsibility for care and management had been placed in their hands by an 1858 Act.

In November 1844 the first ferry service commenced between Customs House and Kangaroo Point and in 1850 Samuel and Matthew Buckley operated a rowing boat ferry service at Bulimba. In 1864, John Watson began a vehicular ferry at Bulimba under lease. He purchased the allotment at the terminal to build his house. The route was then serviced by the steam paddleboat 'Advance' until transferred to the city route in 1893 when floods destroyed the Victoria Bridge. It was replaced at Bulimba by a punt operated by winch and cable until a new ferry was obtained.

In 1888 Bulimba and Hawthorne were included in the area for which the Balmoral Divisional Board was responsible. Balmoral Shire was created in 1901 and was responsible for Apollo, Bulimba, Norman Park, and Hawthorne ferries. A special sub-committee was responsible for the provision of boats, buildings and landings and fixed fares. In 1921 the Balmoral council decided to replace the existing waiting sheds and landing at Bulimba with a substantial ferry house to shelter waiting passengers. In 1922 they commissioned a ferry house design from the prominent architectural firm of GMH Addison and Son. The tender of E Taylor was accepted for the construction in July 1922. By August the building was under construction and tenders for the construction of a pontoon were called in September 1922.

The design for the proposed building appeared in the December 1922 edition of the Architects and Builders Journal of Queensland, however, as GHM Addison died in February 1922 following a protracted illness, the design is most likely by his son George Frederick Addison. The quality of the building and the choice of a noted firm of architects for the design attest to the importance of the ferry service in the life of the community.

George Henry Male Addison was Welsh born and trained in England. He immigrated to Adelaide in 1883 and then moved Melbourne. He was an artist as well as an architect and was one of the founders of Melbourne Art Society. He moved to Brisbane in 1886 as local partner of Terry, Oakden and Addison. Addison won prizes for both architectural design and fine arts and served on a number of important committees and advisory panels connected with both. In late 1892 he set up in practice on his own, forming a partnership with L G Corrie in 1898. The firm designed many major buildings including churches, banks, and commercial buildings. From 1919 he was in practice with his son, George Frederick Addison as G Addison and Son. G F Addison studied at Brisbane Central Technical College and was articled to his father. Apart from his military service in World War One, he practiced as an architect until 1940.

In 1924 the Balmoral Council called tenders for a second ferry house, to a slightly modified version of the Bulimba design, to be erected at the Hawthorne ferry terminal. Both terminals can be seen at one time from the river. The steam ferry 'Hetherington' served the Bulimba route for many years, being estimated to have been responsible for over 10 million passenger and 2 million vehicle trips between 1928 and it's decommissioning in 1952. There was also a motor ferry on the route.

The ferry connected Bulimba with Teneriffe, which was the site of many industrial and commercial enterprises, so that the ferry carried many people to and from work. It was also put to an unexpected community use as illustrated by the comment of the Sunday Mail of the 3rd of March 1929 that the ferry house was being used informally as a dressing shed for local youths who were swimming in the river.

In 1925 the various Brisbane district councils amalgamated into a single local government authority, the Brisbane City Council, and construction of ferry terminals because of their responsibility. In October 1925 the contract for the new waiting shed at Hawthorne was let for the original design, though other Brisbane City Council terminal buildings were less ornamental. Of the other ferry terminal buildings on the Brisbane River, most were built much later and none are as ornate as the Brisbane and Hawthorne ferry houses.

In 1985 extensive repairs and renovations were carried out to the Bulimba ferry house, which included replacing the clocks in the tower. It is still in use as a ferry terminal.

The Golden Ratio also informs the design of the golden revolver on all the swimsuits and lingerie, as well as the 45surf logo!

The Golden Number Ratio Principle: Dr. E’s Golden Ratio Principle: The golden ratio exalts beauty because the number is a characteristic of the mathematically and physically most efficient manners of growth and distribution, on both evolutionary and purely physical levels. The golden ratio ensures that the proportions and structure of that which came before provide the proportions and structure of that which comes after. Robust, ordered growth is naturally associated with health and beauty, and thus we evolved to perceive the golden ratio harmonies as inherently beautiful, as we saw and felt their presence in all vital growth and life—in the salient features and proportions of humans and nature alike, from the distribution of our facial features and bones to the arrangements of petals, leaves, and sunflowers seeds. As ratios between Fibonacci Numbers offer the closest whole-number approximations to the golden ratio, and as seeds, cells, leaves, bones, and other physical entities appear in whole numbers, the Fibonacci Numbers oft appear in nature’s elements as “growth’s numbers.” From the dawn of time, humanity sought to salute their gods in art and temples exalting the same proportion by which all their vital sustenance and they themselves had been created—the golden ratio.
