Iowa Traction 54 pulls a single car from the AGP bean mill at West Mason City, IA as motor 51 holds the main with scrap loads from Emery. With a limited physical plant, IATR would normally use two motors at West Mason City to get all of the switching, industry, and interchange work done quickly and efficiently. Watching the two man crew perform their moves hopping from one motor to the other, swapping roles between motorman and switchman, and raising and lowering trolley poles, was like watching a well choreographed dance. An iron ballet, if you will. I haven't been back to the Traction in well over a decade, but hopefully the show still goes on.
The booted eagle (*Hieraaetus pennatus*) is a medium-sized bird of prey found across parts of Europe, Asia, and North Africa. It gets its name from the distinctive feathering on its legs, which gives the appearance of wearing "boots." This agile raptor is known for its soaring flight and can often be seen gliding gracefully in open woodlands and mountainous regions. The booted eagle displays two main color morphs—pale and dark—which help it blend into a variety of environments. It primarily feeds on small mammals, birds, and reptiles, hunting with sharp vision and swift dives. Despite its relatively small size compared to other eagles, the booted eagle is a powerful and efficient hunter. It breeds in the northern parts of its range and migrates to Africa or southern Asia during the winter, making it one of the many raptors that undertake long seasonal journeys.
I went down to the city yesterday to check out the new Metro Stations. After spending a huge amount of money the 5 stations are now open with the trains running on a 10am - 5pm timetable while they ease the new stops into the timetable. The stations are large, orange decorated and clean. The platforms use automatic doors and floor to ceiling screens to stop customers from jumping onto the tracks as well as reducing the wind draft into the station (more energy efficient!). At the moment the helpful Metro staff are rostered on to help customers navigate the new system and linkages to the old Metro stations Flinders Street and Melbourne Central.
While the platforms have these orange trims, the entrances to the stations are of differing colours and structures.

Griffon vultures have been used as model organisms for the study of soaring and thermoregulation. The energy costs of level flight tend to be high, prompting alternatives to flapping in larger birds. Vultures in particular utilize more efficient flying methods such as soaring. Compared to other birds, which elevate their metabolic rate to upwards of 16 times their basal metabolic rate in flight, soaring griffon vultures expend about 1.43 times their basal metabolic rate in flight. Griffon vultures are also efficient flyers in their ability to return to a resting heart rate after flight within ten minutes.
As large scavengers, griffon vultures have not been observed to seek shelter for thermoregulation. Vultures use their bald heads as a means to thermoregulate in both extreme cold and hot temperatures. Changes in posture can increase bare skin exposure from 7% to 32%. This change allows for the more than doubling of convective heat loss in still air. Griffon vultures have also been found to tolerate increased body temperatures as a response to high ambient temperatures. By allowing their internal body temperature to change independently of their metabolic rate, griffon vultures minimize their loss of water and energy in thermoregulating. One study in particular (Bahat 1995) found that these adaptations have allowed the Griffon vulture to have one of the widest thermal neutral zones of any bird.
It declined markedly throughout the 19th–20th centuries in much of Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, mainly due to direct persecution and "bycatch" from the poisoned carcasses set for livestock predators (Snow and Perrins 1998, Ferguson-Lees and Christie 2001, Orta et al. 2015). In some areas a reduction in available food supplies, arising from changes in livestock management practices, also had an impact (Ferguson-Lees and Christie 2001, Orta et al. 2015). It is very highly vulnerable to the effects of potential wind energy development (Strix 2012) and electrocution has been identified as a threat (Global Raptors Information Network 2015). Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) used for veterinary purposes pose a threat to this species. One case of suspected poisoning caused by flunixin, an NSAID, was recorded in this species in 2012 in Spain (Zorrilla et al. 2015). Diclofenac, a similar NSAID, has caused severe declines in Gyps vulture species across Asia.

The efficient bus took me to Monnickendam, 12 km to the north of Amsterdam. Don't let me bore you with my findings about that small medieval city, today a thriving summertime harbor. Instead, allow me to tell you about my pleasant hike south on the Zeedijk which protects Waterland from the sometimes violent waters of what was once the Zuyderzee but now called the Markermeer since the great dike - Afsluitdijk - that closed the 'Zee' off from the North Sea.
That 'Sea Dike' took me along the Gouwzee which separates the island of Marken due east from the mainland. I continued onward to Zuiderwoude and finished my hike at Broek in Waterland, whence a bus carried me back to the City.
Walking on that dike I for the first time actually experienced the fact that much of the land here is below sea level. But the day was pleasant - though blowing a nasty cold wind - and the colors fabulous. Of course I didn't hesitate to take a dip among the other Old Coots - Fulica - which you can see right by my muddied waters. As I lay drying in the Sun, my eyes set on the greens of not yet blossoming Queen Anne's Lace, Anthristicus sylvestris, with its beautiful delicate hairs. And here he was, too, large-eyed Bibio marci, St Mark's Fly (St Mark's feastday is on April 25, in just a few days). He's really beautiful and just about ready, i would think, to find his small-eyed female partner. But I didn't stay to watch...
Yes, we did it. And we have plenty of blisters to prove! We whinged, moaned and cursed but at the end we walked 100km in impressive 26h44min59s non-stop through the night to Brighton. Only 288 teams (out of 502 who set off in Petersfield) crossed the finish line and we are quite proud of our achievement as, according to the organisers, our time is the new event record in the category "fastest slightly overweight Brazilians in their early thirties with a strange attraction for lycra (but only some of them!)". Actually, we could've cut down the time by 15min but, keeping a Brazilian tradition, we were late for the big day.
But we didn't walk the equivalent of almost 2.5 marathons (and a complete ascent of Ben Nevis!) just because we like to punish our feet for not being good enough to play football professionally. We did it to raise money for Oxfam and The Gurkha Welfare Trust.
So please help us beat our fundraising target by making a donation through this page. It is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor us: Trailwalker will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.
What will your donations do? £6 can pay for an amazing 100 school dinners for children, encouraging them to go to school to learn to read and write - some food for thought! / £12 buys two dozen chickens (isn't that a KFC family bucket?) / £35 can buy a solar powered water pump and filter system to bring clean and safe drinking water to some of the most remote places on the planet where needed.
Oxfam is a development, relief and campaigning organisation dedicated to finding lasting solutions to poverty and suffering around the world. The Gurkha Welfare Trust was set up in 1969 to relieve hardship and distress among Gurkha ex-servicemen of the British Army and their dependents in Nepal – one of the poorest countries in the world. The Trust’s work now also includes assistance with medical aid, education and aid to communities in which the Gurkhas live. Money raised through Trailwalker funds education projects across Nepal.
Many thanks for your support.
To sponsor us, please just go to www.justgiving.com/braziliannuts

The International Bridge- -a 4.5 kilometer / 2.8 mile long metal Cantilever (suspended deck) Warren Through Truss two lane bridge with a two span arch over the American Soo Locks and a single span arch over the Canadian Sault Canal. It was designed by the New York architectural firm of Steinman, Boynton, Gronquist and London; the bridge opened October 1962. The bridge spans the St. Marys River and connects Sault Ste. Marie Michigan to Sault Ste. Marie Ontario.
The Sault Canal opened in 1895- - it was the world’s first electrically operated lock, and the world’s longest lock- -274 metres / 899 feet long and 18 metres / 59 feet wide. Closed in 1987 due to a lock wall collapse, the canal was reconstructed and reopened for recreational boating use in 1998. The Sault Canal is operated as a National Historic Site by Parks Canada.
I don't think the old fashioned apple peeler, corer, slicer has been improved upon. So simple and so efficient-
I'm not sure how this math works out, but apparently I was 92% efficient yet only 3% productive tonight.
Bicycles are simply the most efficient form of transport. They produce no waste and improve our health and wellbeing. If we all used a bike to get to work and visit friends and family or went on cycling holidays instead of road trips, it would have an immediate and profound effect on our fossil fuel use and contribution to climate change.
Finally, as if all this is not compelling enough, cycling just 10km each way to work, once a week, instead of driving saves about $926 and 304kg of greenhouse gases each year.
Excerpt from en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australia_Dairy_Company:
Australia Dairy Company (澳洲牛奶公司) is a traditional Hong Kong restaurant, cha chaan teng, in Jordan, Hong Kong, specialising in steamed milk pudding, scrambled eggs, toast and custard dishes. The company was named by the founder, who had worked on an Australian farm in the 1940s.
The restaurant's brand name was coined from its high quality dairy ingredients being specifically imported from Australia. Founded in 1970 by the Tang family, it is one of the oldest restaurants in Hong Kong. It has been mentioned by The Guardian as one of the top 10 budget restaurants in Hong Kong.
The restaurant is notable for its efficient but often rude service, with a short average customer visit length of only 10 minutes. It is also famous for its signature egg custard pudding and scrambled eggs. It has been described as an iconic Hong Kong restaurant.

OK. Believe it or not, you're looking at the internet. Or at least a major part of it... when CERN's last collider was up and running in the late 80s and early 90s, they needed a way to crunch all the data they were getting... so they developed a way for computers to efficiently network and talk to one another. This eventually became the backbone of the internet. CERN's computing center is still one of the 3 main hubs for ALL internet traffic, meaning that you might be connecting through it right now.
This HAL-9000 kind of thing is the user interface for a room full of switches and hubs.

Having efficiently intercepted the short 302 axle expediter at the Sooline Trail, I made a break west with no further eastbounds until Dilworth. A check of ATCS in Verndale showed several EBs around the Hawley area, so I aimed for an intercept in New York Mills where I ended up getting three.

these types of bins are fairly new in montreal and don't appear to be very efficiently used by residents. there are slots for glass, paper & "whatever" (not well marked). they also don't seem to have very regular pickup. it appears montreal needs a better system of information on the complex issues involved here.
i found the doors left ajar and mixed trash spread all over the busy sidewalk.
i will send some of these to the municipal offices.
Such efficient hunters. You watch the Green Heron for awhile and you'll notice he'll take on large fish for his size, big bull frogs, & never miss a chance at a tiny minnow like in this pic.
Messing around with a technic frame for larger mech legs, but before I went to far I wanted to make sure I could cover the technic skeleton efficiently. This is what I came up with, it may be slightly rough if your a Lego by math kinda guy, but it's solid when assembled and that's good enough for me.
I know there are probably other ways of doing this such as with inverted 90 degree brackets and technic bricks (not beams).
Additional note: If you replace the tile on the two stud wide side with two plates and and put a 3 wide plate centred to the single stud side if forms a fairly perfect SNOT rectangle. Didn't show an example of that in the picture so you'll have to take my word for it or try it yourself.
Still not sure if it will be useful to me but thought I would share anyway.
Wolf-Rayet stars are known to be efficient dust producers, and the Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) on the NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope shows this to great effect. Cooler cosmic dust glows at the longer mid-infrared wavelengths, displaying the structure of WR 124’s nebula. The 10 light-years-wide nebula is made of material cast off from the ageing star in random ejections, and from dust produced in the ensuing turbulence. This brilliant stage of mass loss precedes the star’s eventual supernova, when nuclear fusion in its core stops and the pressure of gravity causes it to collapse in on itself, and then explode. As MIRI demonstrates here, Webb will help astronomers to explore questions that were previously only available to theory, questions like how much dust stars like this create before exploding in a supernova, and how much of that dust is large enough to survive the blast and go on to serve as a building block of future stars and planets.
In this image red is assigned to wavelengths of 12.8 and 18 microns (F1280W, F1800W), green to 11.3 microns (F1130W), and blue to 7.7 microns (F770W).
[Image Description: A large, bright cloud of yellow, pink, and purple surrounds a white star that looks like a tiny snowflake. A few small blue background stars are visible. Dark gaps break up the cloud, and small bright areas on the upper and lower left appear like schools of tadpoles swimming toward the central star. There are areas where clumps of bright hot material are being blown outward by the star, like hair streaming out behind someone standing in front of a fan.]

After the efficient train to Groningen I rented a bike to cycle out to friends in the south of the city. But before my visit I stopped at the lovely gardens of the DUO-complex (see my earlier posting www.flickr.com/photos/87453322@N00/25990331244/in/photoli... ).
This is what I saw.
Here's a Narcissus Bulb Fly, Merodon equestris, on a pretty Daisy; I'm most grateful to Thijs de Graaf for his identification, astutely pointing out the vein forms of its wings (see below)! The name 'Merodon' is for the 'tooth-like' (=-odon) thickened structure on its hind femur (=méros). You can see it clearly in this photo. Our Hoverfly is often mistaken for a Bumblebee, but it does resemble those Hairy Flyers. These Lovely Insects are rather difficult to photograph with my humble camera because they're so very black. But the light between the rain showers was just right and delivered up this result.
